I just saw another post where someone said that I should be eating 4 to 6 cups of veggies a day.
I haven't been eating anywhere near that, maybe a cup a day, less on some days. I'm just not a big veggie eater.
I've been strictly following the food list though.
So have I been cheating? What will happen? Should I just start phase 1 today? How does one actually eat that many veggies in any given day? |

The veggies are a key component of the diet, and of any healthy diet. Without all the veggies, it really isn't SB.
To answer the question "have you been cheating," we'd need to know what you've been eating *instead* of veggies. It can make a big difference. Depending on what those choices are, you may or may not need to start over. The big thing is breaking the craving cycle.
Why not check out the meal portion guidelines in my FAQ for a great outline of the meal/snack breakdowns. It comes from the official site and should be very helpful in answering your final question. |

Thanks Kimborini, I read through your FAQ.
It still didn't tell me what I need to know, or at least my dense brain didn't see it.
I started phase 1 last wednesday, so this is day 6
I eat 3 eggs a day, usually with a couple of slices of Canadian bacon (Kassler here in Sweden), I will snack on celery, or low fat cheese (17% fat), A can of tuna fish in water, with diced red onion and diced celery and 2 tablespoons of light mayo for lunch, for dinner a couple of times I have just cooked up a slab of extra lean ground beef and had it with mustard. I had baked chicken once (the leg, thigh and breast, it was before I realized that I should only have the breast), I had some rosemary salmon from the book a couple of times, and once I had three hotdogs with mustard (I think that is a bad idea and won't be eating them again) I have had some 4% cottage cheese, it is the only fat cottage cheese I can get in Sweden- but not a lot.
I have had 4 or 5 diet cokes and a couple of cups of black coffee in the last 6 days.
I have had no milk (I usually drink about 2 quarts of 1.5% a day), bread, rice, potatoes or chocolate. None.
I have been taking the metamucil 3 times a day (I had to have that sent out from the states), it is the sugar free orange variety.
I have been drinking a lot of water, maybe 10 or 12 glasses a day (I usually don't drink water at all)
I weigh about 260 pounds and want to get down to 185 or 190. My diet in the past has been horrific, really poor, mostly fast food or something on the fly at home, meaning a lot of prepackaged foods, a lot of breads too. A lot of cheese and ice cream and I am a definite chocoholic.
For the first time in my life (I am 46) I had my blood work done before I started this diet. Surprisingly, my glucose was normal, and my bad colesterol and serum colesterol were in the borderline high areas, as were the triglcerides, my good colesterol was very low though. |

I *think* the portion guidelines question is what will help, unless I'm misunderstanding what you're looking for. Look at the meal templates for how to design your meals.
You don't need to start over. It just looks more like Atkins than SB-- you're hardly getting any carbs at all**. Are you having any bad breath? Feeling dizzy or weak? You should be drinking milk and eating beans and veggies for your carbs. Start adding those right away, but don't start over.
**To be fair to Atkins, they're really supposed to eat more carbs than that, but lots of people get confused about it and don't. |

I guess what I was really looking for was if I needed to start over or not. I will try to eat more veggies. I had a headache on the third day, but other than that I feel fine, I feel really full all the time, as though I am eating too much. I am guessing this comes from the metamucil.
As to the milk, I can't get 1% here, it is nonfat, 1.5% or whole milk, and I just don't like the nonfat. I will probably use that though when I reach the point where I can have cereal.
Maybe I should be doing the Atkins instead?
If I might ask, how long have you been doing the diet? |

You can switch to Atkins if you'd like, but I'd recommend staying on SB personally. I've been on it for over a year and really feel it to be a wonderfully healthy way of eating. I plan on sticking to it for life. I eat 3 grains and 3 fruits daily in addition to the p1 foods, and I never feel hungry.
One of the hallmarks of Atkins is that it wants you to be in ketosis, and one sign of ketosis is what some Atkinsers refer to as "dragon breath." That's right-- horrible breath is a sign that they're doing it right! No thanks!
1.5% is probably close enough. Sometimes you just do the best with what is available. You *could* get nonfat and 1.5% and mix them half and half.
The Metamucil is really for times when you feel like the meal might be a little higher GI. I don't think there's any reason to eat it every single day for fullness, unless Dr A has drastically changed the book from my edition. |

Rob - if you eat your veggies you may find that you don't need the metamucil!
