Phase 2 and on a Plateau

No matter what I try, I seem to be stuck at a plateau for the last month between 209 to 212 pounds. I have tried to increase exercise and decrease foods that I added in phase 2 with no success. But
1) I am feeling great (except for a slightly pulled hamstring!)
2) I love the phase 2 diet, even the wine!
3) In my last test, my body fat percentage is between 15% to 12%
4) My chloesterol levels, blood glucose levels, and blood pressure are all excellent
5) My exercise routine is aggressive - 5+ hours of hard aerobics plus free weight strenght training a week. (Pulled hamstring getting off the eliptical training and didn't stretch int out -- my stupid error.) I like being a 'gym rat'.
6) I feel stronger and fitter now than I have been since I left the US Army, 33+ years ago.

The last time I saw my physician, about 2 weeks ago for an ear infection, he stated that I am in 'fantastic shape'. Therefore, I scheduled a full physical with him just to see if I am really in 'fantastic' shape and if I should be concerned about losing any more weight.

Hmm - you're doing what I did to break my 4 wk stall, so I can't offer any suggestions, except that it sounds like you're very healthy where you are - maybe that's what your body wants?

Plateaus happen. Your body just needs a break right now as it adjusts to the weight loss so far. I'm glad your Dr. thinks you are in fantastic shape and that you are deciding to get a full physical to see if he's right!

My last few pounds - seems like weight loss was 1 pound per month - or even 0.5 pounds per month! I went through at least 1 two month stall if I recall correctly.

This may be an opportunity for you to focus more on maintenance rather than weight loss. A "practice run" for Phase 3. If more weight is supposed to come off, it will eventually. In the meantime you can enjoy the healthy eating plan - it sounds like you already are.

Make sure you are getting adequate rest and recovery time with all your fitness work. The aggressive exercising may actually be slowing your weight loss in the short run. In the long run of course it will be a great foundation for future health.

Good luck!

By the way - if your body fat % is truly 15% or less, then clearly you don't need to lose any more weight!

I was able to break some stalls by eating different things. Even if they were the same calories or the same GI, if they were different foods they sometimes made a difference. I also found that I was better off eating more grains, at least 2 servings a day. Now I am in a major stall, and I'm starting to come to terms with the fact that I may just not lose much more.

I'm right there with ya, Bob. I've been playing with the same 5 lb. for the past 5 months. Last Saturday I did a longer than usual workout in the morning, then got caught up in a family emergency and had to skip snacks and lunch; the next day I was on the down side. I thought to myself, "OK, that means less food and more exercise is what I need." I don't intend to make a habit out of skipping lunch, but maybe cutting back on portions will do it.

One thing I forgot to mention initially. I have/had atypical Graves and thanks to the radioactive iodine, I now have zero thyroid function. Therefore I am taking synthroid. The level of synthroid was meant for a 260 pound-OGB. Now at ~210 pounds, the level may be too high and screwing up my appetite among other things. Tests will be done to check that too!

Not much else to add really. You sound like you are really in great shape and I know you do a lot of weight training, and have really worked on increasing your muscle mass, so that may be the "best" you can do at the moment relative to the scale numbers. That body fat % is outstanding and basically you have "all systems go!" I really wouldn't worry about the weight value too much at this point. You really are an inspiration!! Keep up whatever the heck you are doing because it seems to be working just fine! Enjoy your successes!! You have accomplished so much, that I just would try and put the whole scale thing out of your mind for awhile and focus on all your victories!!

Ahah! Seems like a pretty good clue there. Until you get your meds straight it seems like you can't reach your ideal weight.

Still - if your body fat is that low, that's what really matters.
