Hello, all. I posted this on another thread, but I don't think it reached the people that may be able to help me. So, I'm reposting it. I started SBD on 2/4/05 and am transitioning to Phase 2. While I still have quite a bit of weight to lose (a LOT), I am feeling better than I have in years and am losing regularly. I am a Type 2 diabetic since having had GD when I was pregnant with my son 11 years ago. I can't take any of the pills because I am still nursing my 1 1/2 year old, so shots have been my only option. Well, since starting SBD almost 2 weeks ago, I haven't had to have any insulin, haven't needed it! I'm not having dizzy spells, my vision has cleared up (I had blurred vision when my sugar levels rose before). All around wonderful things are happening now and I've commited myself to a healthy lifestyle.
Here are my questions. My DH has had Type 1 diabetes for about 20 years. He takes quite a bit of insulin each day (both N & R 3 shots/day) totalling to about 140 (R) and 100 (N). He's had a really hard time whenever he tries to diet and reduce carbs. I think I read somewhere (still finding my way around the board) that he would need to start a modified phase 2 SBD. But, I can't find that reference now. Is that correct?
He wants to lose about 50 pounds, besides the diabetes, he has high blood pressure (takes Lotrel), high cholesterol (no meds yet), and a lung disorder (uses 2 inhalers 2x/day). He recently found out that he has some kidney damage due to the diabetes. He also has severe sleep apnea. He's been in Ketoacidosis before and was in a diabetes induced coma for a short time several years ago so we are extremely concerned about doing anything that will adversely affect his blood sugars.
Am I correct in thinking he needs to start on Phase 2? If so, have any of you had problems with reducing bad carbs and switching over to good carbs in controlling sugar levels? Also, he currently does take a lot of insulin in part because he eats a LOT of carbs. So, I know we'll have to watch his blood sugar levels very carefully, but we both really want him to get healthier.
Any advice or direction would be very much appreciated. Thanks!!!!! |

Yes, like Suzzi says--it's hard to give advice on you DH's problem. I am type 2 diabetic and am aware that type 1 is quite different {we have a grandson who was diagnosed with type 1 about 2 years ago}.
I can only say that my glucose levels have stabilized and are in the normal range most of the time. I would assume that going to a more healthy diet would also be beneficial to your DH.
Thus said, the best advice I can give you is to take the lists of approved foods and some sample meal plans (with snacks included) to the doctor and ask him/her if this would be a good plan for your DH to try. {My dr. recommended SBD, but just in case your dr. doesn't know about the program it would be best to be prepared.}
Good luck and let us know how things come out. |

Suzzi & Tennie, thanks to both of you for the information and the good words. I think I will take the food lists and sample menus to his Dr. and see how they want us to balance the issues with carbs vs. insulins until he can adjust his system to expect lower amounts of carbs. Tonight he actually ate the same Taco Salad I made for me WITHOUT the addition of tortilla chips and dips. He lowered his insulin and he's going to monitor it closely tonight and see how it goes.
Thanks, again! |

Great Liz :D Keep us posted on this--you may become the official resident expert on type 1 diabetes.
I'm sure other diabetics will be interested in how the dr. responds and how you DH does on SB. |
