Cooking without alcohol

I've just started the PH2 and seem to be doing alright. Hard to tell how much I've lost since I just started my period and gained because of that. My question is: I found many recipes in the SB Diet Cookbook that sound yummy but call for sherry or wine. I don't drink nor do I use alcoho in my cooking. Normally I would substitute apple or grape juice but can I do that on the SBD? Thanks

Sure, you can do that...the juice adds a bit of sugar but not much really. One thing I do when a recipe calls for white wine and I don't have it is to use chicken broth. For red, I use beef broth.

kenny, those are great hints, very helpful. I'm a non-drinker and don't necessarily have wine around. Thanks!

You may also want to give the version with the alcohol a try once. I'm also a non-drinker, but some dishes the taste is not readily apparent.

Some of course, it's all too present, like the "rum cake" I was served at my in-laws a long time ago - the rum was poured on after it was cooked!

If the concern is about actual alcohol intake, most of it is eliminated in the cooking process, leaving the flavor behind. However, if there are any concerns (AA) then go with the substitutes.

The alcohol burns off during cooking and you are left with the taste, so you wont actually be consuming alcohol if you cook with it.

Check out this link that I found and have posted in my recipe summary for anyone to use in the future as well:

I don't like wine, but I do enjoy some of those recipes that use wine. The book's p1 Cracker Pepper Steak is a favorite at our house.

Thanks for all the advise. I don't have alcohol around the house on as a principle and I use substitutes whenever something calls for it. I think I'll try the broth or maybe the sugar-free juices that are currently on the market. Thanks again.
