doing WW with a little of SB

I like how healthy SB is but like WW due to not doing without some of the foods that I like so well. Is there anyone that is doing WW but still kind of sort of doing SB?

I would be cautious, dordie. I admit to being a WW-basher (as you can see from some of my other posts on this forum!). But it was "not doing without some of the foods that I like so well" - like Weight Watchers muffins and pancakes made with sugar and white flour, and sweet-sour Asian-style dishes with lime juice and brown sugar - which got me into trouble in the first place.

I guess most of us here have found out the hard way that you can't have your (white sugar, white flour) muffin and lose weight too!

I guess you are right. I know with WW I feel like cheating all the time and when I was on SB I didn't cheat unless it was with no sugar added treats or more peanuts then I was suppose to have. I lowered my cholestrol while I was doing SB so I didn't have to get on medication. I know that SB is way better then any diets out there. But I didn't like to be confined. But did lose 6 pounds in 4 weeks while I was on SB that is a lot more weight loss then while I was on WW.

I know many that eat the SB way and use the WW point system to help with portion control, which many have problems with, including myself. I use the point system sometimes when I feel I'm not losing due to my portion sizes. I don't see why it's a bad thing to use the best of both if that is what makes you successful.

Madriz is right, but with some qualification - use WW to control portion sizes, but eat ONLY SB friendly food, or you will find you are gaining.

I haven't posted in quite some time, but I have a number of posts in which I describe my experience of combining WW with SB. I lost my last 20 lbs this way and hit my WW goal last August. I am now a lifetime member of WW with a 53 lbs weight loss that I have maintained.

Combining both programs was the best thing that I did for myself. I was on a 6 month plateau when I started combining both plans. SB helped me realize alot of the mistakes I was making in my food choices. I don't think, however, that I would have lost the rest of my weight following either of the plans individually. The points system kept me accountable for what I was eating and I need the support of the meetings.

This may not work for everybody but it definitely worked for me.

I belong to TOPS, a weight loss club that meets weekly for weigh-ins and programs. Just last Tuesday, one of the members who's reached her goal weight was speaking with me, knowing that I'm on SB. She indicated that she had combined WW and SB and a little of something else and ended up so lost as to what to do, she not only stalled but gained. She finally had to see a nutritionist who told her that it's not a very good idea to combine things. The nutritionist laid out a plan for her, she reprogrammed herself and followed it, and lost all of the weight she needed to.

So, I guess, since it's worked for some and not worked for others, you really need to figure it out for yourself. Good luck!

LyndaB - wondering how TOPS is working for you? Do you have more sense of portion?

I think the main risk of the WW point system is that it discriminates against good fats like nuts and olive oil. If you find yourself skimping on those foods in order to save points, you may end up sabotaging yourself. Those good fats are important for good health and for satiety in your meals. The key is to use them in moderation. If a meal is too low in good fats, you will be hungry soon after, so limiting them doesn't help you eat less total calories in the long run.

I agree. The WW points system gives the same number of points (3) to both a Krispy Kreme donut or a tiny, tiny portion of watercress, orange and avocado salad.

I still use some of my favourite WW salad recipes, but usually double the serving size. The recommended portion sizes are tiny - more like a garnish than a salad! And they certainly wouldn't satisfy me.

I did WW and got down to my goal weight... but counting points was NOT sustainable for me as an ongoing lifestyle change. So I gained a bunch back. I've thought about combining WW and SB, but it's just too much to think about... I've found that on SB, if I have reasonable portions (and I don't mean measuring and counting everything, more like eating *1* chicken breast instead of 2, or a small bowl of cereal instead of a huge one), it all sort of works itself out and I come out pointswise similar to where I would be on WW anyway. Only instead of eating low-points, high-sugar things like granola bars, I've been eating good fats and carbs. What it basically comes down to, for me at least, is that on WW, I feel like I'm struggling to eat the right amount, whereas on SB, I feel like I reach that point naturally because I don't have the same cravings and insane hunger pangs. Of course, you do have to be willing to cut certain things out of your diet (except for the occasional treat). If you're not, and you try and eat SB-style most of the time, but still have sugary stuff on a routine basis, it's not going to work for you.

Good luck!

I am learning a lot at TOPS. The portion thing I think I have under control as a benefit of the "8 Minutes in the Morning" book (the blue one). At TOPS, however, one of the girls looked over my menu and said it was really protein-heavy in the mornings. So, I cut back and each Sunday, that scale is down. Something's working!

I do love TOPS, by the way. I'm going to give a program on exercise in a few weeks. I'm really looking forward to that. :D

Lately, I've been doing a combined WW/SB too.

I kind of hit a stall, and I decided I was probably eating too much of the high calorie stuff. So I went back to counting points with my SB-friendly foods. I eat only SB-allowed foods but I stay within my allowable WW points, including exercise exchanges. It keeps me honest about what I'm really eating all day.

If you're going to combine WW with SBD, why not use the WW Core Program? If you start really looking at the list of allowable foods, it looks to me like a WW version of South Beach! Which is the very reason I decided to do this and save a ton of money rather than give $11 a week to WW....$11 buys quite a bit of string cheese... :P
