has anyone else had NO luck with this diet? i'm on day 10 right now, and honestly haven't dropped a pound. i've been so good and haven't cheated at all, and i know it comes off slower when you have less to lose (i've got about 15), but i'm so frustrated!!! i don't want to give up, but it's hard to stay motivated when i don't see any results.
any suggestions/anyone else have this problem?
Thanks!! |

hmmmm... I haven't really started yet but was planning on it on Monday. We have a thing going on at church this weekend I want to be a part of first. I've been reading this site for hours and so many are having success. I'll be watching the replies with you. I sure don't want to start this thing and have it not work for me either.
One question: are you being faithful to eating the exact way that phase one calls for? |

Hello:
I'm on my 12th day of P1 and have not lost a pound! I have felt a very small change in inches. I'm following the diet and working out 3-4 times a day (cardio only). I'm feeling tired all the time. I'm eating plenty of food and drinking plenty of water. I have recently cut out the diet soda from the diet and will start cutting back on the garbanzo and black beans. I don't know what else to do. I'm very discouraged and fustrated right now. :x I'm 5'3" and weigh 149 pounds. My ultimate goal is to lose 30 pounds. I've always done diet pills and that has worked but I don't want pills anymore. Can someone PLEASE share some advise or instruction? I have read the book and I didn't see anything about "when your stuck...do this." I read the section on "Why do people occasionally fail on this diet" but nothing pertained to me. I don't want to give up. Has anyone not lost any weight in the first phase? I don't want to begin P2 without first losing some weight and feeling comfortable with myself and the diet. What am I doing wrong!!!!
I'm open to all comments and welcome any advise or counsel I can get. Thanks! |

Hi vtskillz! :D Couple things come to mind. First, have you taken your measurements? There was a great thread last week on the SouthBeach forum (in this website) about someone who thought she hadn't lost much weight but her measurements indicated she had really done well! :)
Last year when I did phase 1, I didn't lose much but I remember feeling much better (not so tired all the time, no heartburn, no bloating anymore) and feeling like I was getting healthier. You know what I mean???
Also, I know this may not make you feel "much" better, but see if this helps (an excerpt from the official SB website):
"Many of our subscribers think that the purpose of Phase 1 is rapid weight loss. This is not the case. I developed Phase 1 as a method to eliminate cravings, and the majority of your weight loss will actually occur in Phases 2 and 3. If you remain in Phase 1 for longer than the recommended two weeks, you run the risk of lowering your metabolism and setting yourself up for yo-yo dieting. Instead of shedding the pounds and keeping them off, you may end up making it that much easier to put the weight back on."
Hope this helps somehow! |

don't worry that you haven't lost anything in phase 1.. since you only have 15 lbs to lose you might only see like a 1 lbs weight loss in those two weeks, the main purpose of phase one is to get sugar cravings out of your system. the real weight loss will happen in phase 2. a word of advice since you have so little to lose you want to make sure you don't eat too much of the good things, like cheese and beans... while these things are totally diet approved a lot of people consider them diet busters so you might want to make sure you limit your intake (not to say you need to totally eliminate them or anything)
also are you exercising. i can see where it's hard to exercise in phase 1 (i had no energy) but exercise can really help kick up weight loss in phase 2. that being said good luck and don't get discourgaged!
also don't forget to take your measurement along with your weight- sometimes your measurements can change without actual lbs coming off! |

Hi blessed. I know you're in phase 1, but I'm searching the official site for answers and I found this so far (it is in reference to phase 2 but maybe it can give you some ideas). I hope it helps. I'm sorry you're having trouble. Wish I could give ya a hug!! :P
"...there are some things you can do when you feel you have hit a plateau:
-If you don't exercise, start adding it into your routine—aerobic, light weight lifting, and stretching.
-If you do exercise, try increasing the intensity and length of your workouts.
-Take a close look at your intake of foods such as low-fat cheese and nuts. These foods are allowed on The South Beach Diet™, but some people have found that increased amounts can affect their ability to lose weight.
-It also may be time to try new recipes and new ingredients. Sometimes, simply adding more variety to your diet is all you need to get a jump start.
Did you say you are drinking plenty of water? And, are you hungry? Do you think your cravings have gone away or do you still have cravings??

i've been really good about following the foods. i recently cut out nuts/peanut butter as i read that some people have trouble losing when they include those foods. i've also cut way back on coffee/diet soda...maybe one cup a day and one soda a day max.
i'll definitely look into measuring inches though, and i do "feel" better so i'm gonna stick with it for now....thanks! |

Thanks for responding Babice. I really appreciate your advice and thoughtfulness. I'm drinking 8-12 glasses water a day. I do not have any cravings! I love choc. but have not desired it at all! I'm not hungry either. I've tried to be creative with my food but perhaps I'm eating too much. I love blk beans and garbanzo beans and I have it every day with either brkfst, lunch or dinner or all three times. I also enjoy having a sugar free butter toff. lifesaver through out the day (3). That is the only thing I can think of that may be preventing me from losing weight.
Here is a list of what I eat: lots of salads (w/tomato, avacado & lemon as a dressing), chicken, turkey, canadian bacon (2/dy), lettuce wraps w/turkey or bacon, tom, avac., 2% cheese, blk beans, garbanzo beans, veggies (squash, zuc, bell peppers and onion - sauteed), grn & blk olives, dill pickles, diet jello & sugarfree pudding, lite whip cream, sugar free but. toff. lifesavers and pistachios. I use to drink 1-2 diet caff. free sodas a day but I've cut that out. This is pretty much what I'm having at different times and days. |

| blessed: have you tried to figure out how many calories you are having in a day (not all the time just once). sometimes people are eating too LITTLE (imagine that) and not realizing it. Women are designed to store fat for 9 months (silly baby thing) if our body thinks we're getting too LITTLE calories, we'll go into sarvation mode and cling on to every little bit of calories we can get. you might want to check that out. your food choices seem really good though, i just want to make sure you're getting enough of them :) |

Yep. I ditto marniepooh. I don't get the impression you're eating too much...you certainly shouldn't be concerned about not being hungry. Here's something else for you, it's from one of the newsletters sent out by the official site (these are free and you can sign up to get these in emails):
(Published 4/27/04) While The South Beach Diet™ does not aim to limit portion sizes, it can be helpful to keep track of how much you're eating. If you know how much food it takes to satisfy your hunger, you can plan your meals accordingly. And, if you find you're not losing weight, you can determine whether portion size is the culprit.
A great way to get a grasp on portion size is to visualize some everyday objects. Here are a few examples, courtesy of the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota.
• Three ounces of meat is the size of a deck of cards.
• Three ounces of grilled fish is the size of your checkbook.
• One ounce of cheese is the size of four dice.
• One teaspoon of peanut butter equals the tip of your thumb.
• A cup of fruit is the size of a baseball.
• A medium apple or orange is the size of a tennis ball.
• A medium potato is the size of a computer mouse.
• An average bagel is the size of a hockey puck.
To make sure you don't overeat, start with one serving at meals, eat slowly, and go back for seconds only if you are still hungry. Remember, it takes about 20 minutes for your stomach to signal your brain that it's full.

OK. Here's another newsletter email thingie ( ) that I found that might help you out. Just more food for thought:
(Published 12/2/03) Are you having trouble shedding pounds? You're not alone. Some South Beach Dieters don't experience the same weight loss during Phase 1 as others dieters. This could be due to a number of factors, including the following:
-You haven't cut all bad carbohydrates out of your diet. If you suspect this may be the case, reexamine your diet and make the appropriate adjustments.
-You carry most of your weight in the hips and buttocks. Pear-shaped tend to lose weight more slowly. In this case, patience is the key to success.
-Your exercise regimen lacks intensity. While exercise isn't mandatory on the South Beach Diet™, it will certainly help you lose weight faster. Dr. Agatston recommends at least 20 minutes of aerobic exercise a day. If you barely work up a sweat or increase your heartbeat when you exercise, you may not be working hard enough. Try a more difficult activity or increase the length of your workout.
-You're experiencing menopause. If you're a woman going through menopause, decreased levels of estrogen can lead to weight gain or difficulty losing weight. Maintaining a vigorous exercise program, including weight-bearing exercises, can help boost metabolism and aid in weight loss.
-You have a medical condition that prevents you from losing weight. A minority of South Beach Dieters have other causes for their weight gain or slow-to-nonexistent weight loss. If, after a couple of weeks in Phase 1, you see no change in your weight, consult your physician about having blood tests to check your thyroid and lipid profile. |

Wow, thanks so much for the advice, support and enlightment. I REALLY appreciate it. I will keep it all in mind and follow the suggestions everyone has graciously offered me. I will also register for the newsletters.
Yes, I'm a pear shape and I need to be patient.
I will begin P2 on Monday Jan 31st w/out hesitation. |

Hey Blessed, :D
I noticed you are eating sugar free pudding. I think you are supposed to wait until phase 2 for that. |
