I'm new to the SBD, and wonder if Sauerkraut is allowed in Phase 1.

Thanks,

Can you post some nutrition info and an ingredient list. If it is just cabbage, vinegar, water and spices then probably OK, although I would try and find a low-sodium version. The issue I think would be if there are any added sugars that would make it a no-go.

I was just wondering the same thing! I just bought some this weekend, and the ingredient list seems ok. The carbs were less than one per serving and there was no sugar. I've had it twice this week and is very filling.

Just a reminder, but it is not really the carbs we are worried about, just the added sugars. We want to keep eating good carbs in all phases of this program. Carbs are not the enemy here! High GI foods and highly processed foods are those that we are avoiding in general with P1 having some additional restricitons on the good carbs from whole grains and fruits which we reintroduce slowly in P2, but P1 is not the real SB program anyway.

With no added sugars, I would say a qualified OK without having the complete list, but I'd still look for a low-sodium variety!

I don't know how close this matches up with your label, but here is what www.nutritiondata.com has to say about sauerkraut.

In Simple Terms (4 stars out of 5)

The Good
This food is low in Saturated Fat, and very low in Cholesterol. It is also a good source of Calcium, Magnesium and Phosphorus, and a very good source of Dietary Fiber, Vitamin C, Vitamin K, Vitamin B6, Folate, Iron, Potassium, Copper and Manganese.

The Bad
This food is very high in Sodium, and a large portion of the calories in this food come from sugars.

But again if these are natural sugars in the cabbage then they are OK. (And I just ran a similar search on just plain cabbage and they use the exact same wording, so I do think it is just a cabbage thing and not a saurkraut processing thing.) FWIW, enjoy the kraut!

Note you may need to switch the serving size drop down at the top to a more reasonable number to match more closely with what you are looking at on your can.

I just did what I should have done first, went to Kimboroni's FAQ and looked at the P1 foods to enjoy list. And yes, sauerkraut is listed there. So simple really...
