Hi, I am new to the board and new to the SBD. I have lost 6lbs so far since Monday and I am very excited about this new eating. However, for the last 6 days I have used splenda in my morning coffee (I only have one or two cups in the morning, and none the rest of the day) and I have found that I am SICK of splenda. I hate the aftertaste in my coffee. So, I guess my question is, is regular sugar completely forbidden for the rest of my life? I really dont have a problem with it in tea, or eating the sugar free popsicles, I even like it in hot and cold tea, but ICK!! I HATE IT IN COFFEE!!! HELP! Is it ok to have 2 or 4 TEASPOONS of sugar a day??? EVER???

Whether you can ever have sugar again in your life is a complicated question. It will depend on how your body reacts after you've lost all the weight you need to lose. But while you're in P1 or P2, it would be a big mistake to eat sugar. Even 1-2 tsp in coffee could backfire.
I also had a hard time giving up sugar in my coffee, though I did eventually get used to splenda. You might also try whey-low. Some people think it tastes a lot more natural. (You have to order it off the internet; do a search for whey-low on these boards and you should find the information.) |

Thank you, I will look for Whey Low and see how that goes. I don't have a problem with diabetes or anything, just liked my carbs way too much. Thanks for replying

I also don't like the after taste of Splenda. There are many other sweeteners in the store that you can try. I use Sugar Twin and it's fine.

I was actually looking at the Sugar Twin today and didn't buy it because I bought a box of 700 Splenda!! I will try that when I run out. Thanks!

It took me a tremendous time to like Splenda...sometimes I still don't like it (i.e. in Arizona Ice Tea). But...if you put a teaspoon of either pumpkin spice or cinammon in your coffee...it blends beautifully with the splenda...it almost tastes like a treat. But i'm with you on other drinks. I would rather have my herbal teas with nothign in them than to deal with the bald taste of splenda.

I find it really weird that people seem to favour other sweeteners over splenda. It's made with sucralose which tastes MUCH better than the nasty chemical aftertaste of aspartame etc....

I have to agree, I think most other sweetners have a wierd aftertaste that I don't get with Splenda....unless... I use a WHOLE LOT of it. I have found that if I use more than two packs of splenda per serving in whatever I am having there is indeed an aftertaste. I only use one pack and I think it's fine.

I read and or was told that if you mix a packet of Splenda with a 1/2 a packet of the Nutrasweet or Sweet & Low you will get a sweeter taste without having to use as much. This might help some of you. Thankfully, sweet coffee is not something I like, my love of coffee is with 1/2 & 1/2, so I've started using fat free 1/2 & 1/2, an oxymoron there. Not quite the same but I think I'll get used to it along with drinking decaf coffee.
I'm planning on starting Phase 1 on 1/31 and didn't want caffeine withdrawal on my list of changes. Hope mixing the sweetners helps.

understood...I find that when i use more than 2 packs I get the same thing. I have ordered Whey-low and am going to try to see if there is a real diff and whether or not it has an aftertaste.

While I'll still use Spenda in my coffee, I've found that the sugar-free vanilla syrup is my favourite addition for some sweetness. Maybe give that a try?
