Hi all,

I'm new to this forum-- starting SBD Feb 1 with some coworkers. I read the book and am ready to go. Is there advice you can give me before I start?

Also, I'm a relatively healthy eater, but I'm scared to death to give up milk. I eat yogurt and drink milk every single day. The phase I part of this diet is going to kill me. I'll be living for phase II. We've decided to do Phase II for four weeks just to get all the cravings out of our bodies. I wake every morning and have a %1 milk shake with soy/protein powder in it. I'll need to find some kind of replacement. Hot tea, maybe or tomato juice?

Any advice would be appreciated. :) aadenaa

The good news is YOU DON'T GIVE up MILK!

You can have 2-3 servings per day. Yogurt or milk. Yogurt has to be no fat and milk either skim or 1%.

For the yogurt, i believe it has to be plain and non fat, until phase 2 when you can have the fruit flavored kind. One of my tricks is to add a little sf jello powder and a little splenda to non fat plain yogurt. Its really good. You also may want to try cottage cheese (i use 2%) mixed with 1 packet splenda and cinnamon. Good luck!

aadenaa,
Good news about the yogurt and milk, huh?
I noticed you said you were going to extend phase 11, but I'm assuming you meant ph1. My advice would be not to. Many people are so gung-ho in the begining ( I was one of them) that they think staying in ph1 will keep the faster weight loss going...not so, as I can personally attest to. Your cravings should be gone in the two weeks and you should move in ph2. You'll be learning how to eat the way SB teaches and be getting necessary nutrients.
More advice...read these forums, even the older posts. There is so much information here. Your questions will be answered before you even think of them. Check out Kimboroni's FAQ's. TONS of great information there.
My last bit of advice. Relax and enjoy the beach. I wish you great success. GRACE

Be prepared for the downside of P1. Many people experience constipation. You may want some metamucile on hand. It is also common to experience hypoglycemic type symptoms around day 3--tiredness, shakiness, headache. Not everyone gets it but many do. Be sure you are eating enough, eat beans (think chili), and have your dairy. It helps. Not trying to scare you here--it's just something that happens and we get asked about a lot because people don't know about it. It doesn't last long and soon you will be amazed at how much less bloated you'll fell and how much more energy you'll have. It's great!

Wait, I'm confused. It says in the book and online that you have to avoid all dairy products in Phase I-- I can get them back in Phase II. (?)

Seems like Phase I food lists are different depending upon the website that you visit-- or if you read the book. Does anybody have a link where I can print out a fully updated list of foods. I keep hearing that they've added foods to the different phases since the book has been written. I guess now the book is outdated. :)

Well I still think Kimboroni's FAQ is a good place to get updated info, but if you don't believe what you read here, here is the link to the public portion of the "official" SBD paid site sanctioned by Dr. A and his panel of nutritionists that outlines all the various updates. Just click on the title of each one to see what was in that update. The March 22nd update outlines the addition of dairy in P1 and the Nov. 15th update has the increase in dairy from a 2 cup daily amount to a 2-3 cup daily amount.

I have link in my sig file to Kimboroni's FAQ (she is one of the regular helpful posters here) and I'm sure she has a complete updated P1 list that you could print out, or copy and paste into something you could print from.

Good luck!

Thank you for the updated list of ingredients-- I'm going to memorize these so I can get down to business. I'm glad I found this forum-- I was pretty worried about the whole dairy thing after I finished reading the book.

I just discovered that my favorite soup is perfect for Phase I!!

Adena's Caldo de Res

1 Small, unfatty roast (bone in if possible
1 small roma tomato
1 md spanish onion
2 TBS of garlic
10 string beans
1 small cabbage
chopped cilantro
2 tsp cumin
1 tsp black or white pepper
salt to taste

Cut everything into quarters and throw all of it (except the cabbage and cilantro) into a big pot, cover with water and let it simmer for two hours or until the meat falls apart. (You can't overcook this-- just don't let the heat get above a simmer.) Chop cabbage into four hunks-- throw it in with the cilantro and simmer until cabbage is done. Deeelish!

I will survive this now-- this soup is even better heated up the next day!

Thanks so much for your help-- have a fab day!!

Oh! That soup sounds wonderful. And, don't you be scared. You're learning and it sounds like you're eager. You just keep asking questions if you need to and/or ask for help or advice if you feel like you need it, and the folks in this forum will be there for ya! :D By the way, it is very helpful to have stuff on hand "just in case"...like cheese sticks and hummus and nuts, etc. You should be having snacks anyway and if you have a day where you haven't had time to plan your meals, these things will help you out. Good luck! This is a great way of living and I hope it goes well for ya! :P

sorry....I also meant to suggest chili to you. It is one of my fave things and I just make it with lean meat, red chili beans and tomatoes (and of course spices). No flour or anything. But, it's very yummy! :P

Don't be scared--I put off this diet for months and was going to put it off for another 2 weeks due to a convention I will be attending the first weekend in February. Then, a lady in my exercise class said that it is better to start because it works even if you can't follow it exactly and I could get phase one completed right before I left. I am so glad that I did! I am losing weight and feeling great. My acid reflux has already improved and I seem to have more energy. I am also sleeping more soundly at night. And that's after only 5 days!

Hi all,

Just a quick update. I'm almost to Phase 2!! I had one slip-up last weekend where I drank some wine (not allowed during Phase 1) and I accidentally ate some peanuts that had sugar listed as an ingredient in the seasoning-- (Noooooooo!) but I've been going strong since then. The thing is, I haven't lost any weight. My goal is only 15 pounds and from reading posts I understand that some people don't lose as much during Phase 1 when their goal is a little smaller.

It hasn't been too terrible being on the SB-- except for beer and wine and vodka/tonics!!! I used to go to the bar around the corner from me and hang out for hours playing trivia and sipping vodka/tonics. MISS IT!!!

Since I messed up last weekend, I'm going to go another week on Phase 1, I'm hoping I'll lose at least SOME weight. Here is what I've been eating, can someone tell me if I need to change something.

Breakfast (I eat this almost every single day):
small spicy v8 juice
decaf coffee
1 low fat part skim moz cheese stick
a few nuts (usually pistachios)

Lunch:

A large salad with nuts/low fat cheese/ cucumber, tomato and white vinigar with yellow mustard and herbs (I usually add: chicken breast, crab, lean steak, or shrimp to it)
or
Chicken breast or lean steak or shrimp w/ steamed broc/spinich/sauteed mushrooms in olive oil or some other green veggie (I usually make two veggie sides)

Dinner:

Same as lunch, but I make three veggies sides or I eat no sugar added chicken broth as one of my sides.

Snacks:
lf sf yoghurt with Splenda or
lf moz cheese stick or
a small handful of nuts or
a small salad with vinigar and oil

Based on this, anybody know what I might be doing wrong? I'm starting to get frusterated.

Hi! First of all, you are absolutely correct in that it seems that those with less to lose don't lose as much in phase 1. And that's okay! The real point (per Dr. Agaston) of phase 1 is eliminating cravings and readjusting your insulin resistance. It's okay! Really! I know it's disheartening but you'll lose the weight. And, let me tell you how funny this is because I did the SAME thing you did! I cheated and it was with red wine! I was SSOO upset with myself! And I almost didn't start phase 2 because I was afraid that I might have done something that would bring the cravings back. So, what I did was I gave it an extra three days to see if the cravings were there. They weren't so I had oatmeal today for the first time. And I haven't had one craving. Apparently this is the true measure of whether this is working or not. You know?

So, I actually encourage you to reconsider staying in phase 1 another week. Maybe just a couple days or something? If at all? I mean, are you having cravings? (other than the typical thing with wanting to go to the bar with your pals...which, btw, is another thing you and I have in common) Are you hungry during the day?

Anyway, I looked at your menu and it looks good. Except that your bkfast looks kinda light to me (and if peacefulpath is reading this she's going to laugh at me cuz she has had to scold me for this). Can you maybe add some veggies at bkfast? Remember you're supposed to get a minimum of a 1/2 cup veggies at bkfast, 2 cups at lunch and 2 cups at dinner. Only other thing I might suggest is to check the recommended daily portion of nuts compared to how many you're getting. I just today realized that I'm having too much of those (although I'm losing....but I have a lot more to lose than you do).

But, really. It does look like you're eating okay. So, if you're not having a problem with cravings (for pasta, bread, sweets, etc.) then you should pat yourself on the back and congratulate yourself for having done a good job with phase 1!

Then when you do go into phase 2, just do it slowly! Dr. Agaston recommends adding a grain and a fruit each day during the first week and see how you do with that. Although, I have read of others in this
forum who just add the grain per day in the first week.

Sorry I'm chatty Cathy here! LOL  I just relate to you and don't want you to be frustrated with yourself because you've really done a good job! :P

Wow! I'm glad I found this thread!! I'm on day 7 of phase I and I've lost exactly one measley pound. I'm not having any cravings, I've never been a "sweet" person, more of a "salty". However I DO love bread and potatoes, but I haven't missed them at all except for the first day or so. I'm going to deliberately cheat tonight and have a glass of red wine (that cup of hot tea in the evening is just NOT cuttin' it. I find myself eating snacks during the cocktail hour, which I never used to do, and I'm wondering if that's part of the problem. I'm 5'3 and weigh 160, I'd like to lose 50 to 20 lbs. I have STAYED in the bathroom the last 4 or 5 days losing water  I have to friends doing the SB also, and both have lost 4 or more pounds in the first week. I love the food, even on phase I, but I sure would like to see SOME weight loss.
