another bathroom question

I apologize in advance for the gross nature of the question  ....

On Saturday, I ate lunch at a friend's house while working on the dog biscuit "gingerbread" houses. She was nice enough to fix lunch, and tried to keep it healthy for me - chili! The problem is that she made cornbread, too. I had a REALLY small piece - 1x2" piece with a pat of butter. No problems, other than it didn't taste as good as it used to. No cravings at all. Sunday I was up a couple lbs., and was retaining water. Ok, I can deal with that. Last night when I went to bed, my bowels were a little rumbly - no gas, just queasy. This morning, I had diarrhea. At first I thought it was the flu, since I kept going, and going, and going.......but no fever, no nausea, no other flu symptoms. I ate breakfast, drank lots of water, and felt better once everything had passed.

So my question is this: has anybody ever experienced this reaction to having those first ingestions of white flour and sugar? I mean, I've had little bits of each (a couple croutons in a salad that sneaked past my eagle eye, and whatever sugar that is foods already), but nothing that major.....and I hesitate to call it major because it really was just a small piece. I just don't know what else it could have been. At any rate, the water seems to have dissipated - we'll see in the a.m......

Thanks for your input!

Karen, Sorry you had such a time.
It seems to me that too much time had elapsed for the cornbread to have been the culprit. And as dedicated as I know you are I'm sure it was a tiny piece. Maybe you had a little bug "run" through you? That particular one is around some of my friends just now.Sorry I can't answer your real question, but am glad you're feeling better. :) GRACE

Could it have been the corn? Corn has a lot of sugar in it, plus the cornbread has added sugar, also, a thing you would not find in croutons. Hope you feel better.

Grace, I really considered it to be a bug at first. But it just wasn't the same symptoms and it passed too quickly - definitely something ingested (I used to have the same problem when I was doing low-fat and had a bit too much fat at a meal - YUCK!)

Paula, I thought about the corn, but I don't think that was it because I had a 1/4 cup of corn with T'giving dinner, and no problems there. You're right about the higher sugar content in it though.....

Thanks for the suggestions/ideas. I guess it was a great example for me to remember that I have to stay off the "white poison" - definitely gives me more incentive to stay pure (ok, so EAT pure!).

I would be more suspicious of the chili than the cornbread.

Did your friend have the same problem after the meal? Different people will have differences in how their bodies handle food that has been contaminated. The chili could have become contaminated in many ways ... did it have some ground beef in it? Was the chili home-made or from a can or frozen or from a fast food restaurant? Could it be that the chili had been allowed to stand for too long at room temperature? We often do not find out what caused the food to be contaminated ... but if you figure out that it was from the chili, there might be something that you want to do about it.

No, I know the chili wasn't at room temp - it was cooking on the stove all morning. And I've had food poisoning before - trust me, this wasn't it! I wound up in the ER from that one.

My digestive system is pretty quirky - I've suffered from IBS off and on over the years. I finally got that under control when I started relaxation exercises and learned to de-stress my life. Like I said, when I get something out of my system and then re-introduce it, (fat) my body responded by getting rid of it QUICKLY! I kind of assumed this was just another case of the same thing happening. Almost like an allergic reaction........hmm.......I wonder if that might be it? Ah mysteries.......... :?

Might be an allergic reaction to corn, my roomate in college had a huge reaction to the point where she couldn't eat cornstarch. Does that affect you at all? Or maybe something she added into the chili that you are allergic to? Usually if it's something I eat I see reaction within hours not the next night . . . I'm glad you got rid of it quickly though!!

like many things in life, I'll never know the true cause of my intestinal upset. I was just curious as to whether anybody else had ever experienced anything like that from taking in something that had been completely cleaned out of their system. I most heartily appreciate EVERYONE'S thoughts, ideas, suggestions, ponderings, etc. That's what is so great about this board! You are all terrific!

For all the aggravation and discomfort of my bout of the trots, it broke my stall - the water weight is gone now, even though I had way more than my normal 8-10 glasses yesterday to take in what kept coming out. So I suppose it IS true that once-in-a-while it is a good thing to have a banned substance to kick the body up a bit. Of course, this doesn't mean I'll be having a Hershey almond bar anytime soon :D . That would be like the proverbial Dutch boy pulling his finger out of the dam - the flood of water would be a trickle compared to the cravings that would be set off by me eating chocolate again! Not a good thing at all.......

Thanks again everyone for all your help. I love you gals!!!

Maybe it could have been the butter.

I cheated for about a week during thanksgiving, and once I started eating SB foods my stomach was VERY upset. The salads, uncle sam, all that healthy stuff rebelled and I had horrible diarrhea. I think its the change in diet...my stomach obviously doesnt like starting on the diet again, your stomach may not like you if you cheat! :)

Karen,
I've just experienced a reaction to an expectorant that mirrors what happened to you. It took me two days to realize what was happening but I'm quite sure there was a connection. Took the medicine... within a couple of hours...bathroom bout. I forgot to take it to work and was fine. Then when I got home took it again and UGH! back in the bathroom. I haven't had a cold since adulthood and didn't even think about checking the meds for sugar until this happened and I remembered your post.
So, I say your theory is right on. Oh, and it's not a cold afterall...just a bout with sinus, so my "no colds" record holds. :)
As a side, they do make a sugarless cough syrup...DUH! GRACE

Heh, I wonder if the sugarless cough syrup has sugar alcohols in it? For me, that would achieve the same effect as told in Peacefulpath's original post

it's amazing the things we're learning bout our bodies now, isn't it? Things that we would have just ignored in the past, we really pay attention to and analyze (or in my case, OVER analyze! ) Glad your no-colds record is intact Grace!

Kim, I know what you mean about the sugar alcohols. I purposely don't eat sf candy just for that reason. I discovered that YEARS ago (and many diets ago) when I was trying to have my cake (or in this case, candy) and eat it too. No need for a colonic there! Yea, I'll stick with my lilttle bit of Sweet n Low in the coffee and occasional treat with Splenda. Just not worth the discomfort........
