this is my first day on SB and I am experiencing a terrible headache! Is this a normal side effect? Please help.

Perfectly normal - your body is detoxing, so all the crapola is getting out of your system. Make sure to drink plenty of water, and if you have any kind of weakness, try to eat some beans/legumes at at least one meal to get some good carbs in your system, as well as get the milk allowances in.

I am on day 4 and have had a wicked headache for 3 days now. Aspirin takes it away for a little while but when the Asprin wears off the headache is back. It MUST be part of the initial stages of the diet.

I also find that I'm eating more salt than I normally would. I'm not a salt person and would never put salt on my food. A lot of the products that are recommended 'do' have added salt so I'm just going to have to search around for unsalted products.

Hi-

The headaches DO go away. Just make sure you're drinking lots of water.

Does it matter what kind of beans? I don't like very many kinds.

Would green beans work? Or Soybeans?

I am on day 3 and have a headache too.

I've been on the diet a week and a half now and sometimes wake up with a headache. Excedrin takes em out, but I wondered why I'm getting them..I never get headaches, so this is new to me. I'm backing off caffeine, so maybe the headaches are from Starbuck withdrawals. Well, gotta go get 100 crunches in. Good luck!

Headaches are a very common symptom of caffeine withdrawal. If those who are complaining of headaches are also cutting back or cutting out caffeine, then it is part of the withdrawal. Caffeine is a pretty powerful drug and stimulant. One of the reasons most pain relievers relieve headaches is they usually do include some amount of caffeine to help dilate constricted blood vessels.

MargaritaChic, the beans we mean are legumes, like lentils, black beans, garbanzo beans, kidney beans, black-eyed peas, etc. There's a pretty comprehensive list in the food list in my FAQ.

Legumes are one of the most carb-dense plant foods allowed in p1, so they can really help you feel better. Green beans and soybeans are healthy choices, but they won't offer the higher amounts of good carbs that will replace what your system is lacking like legumes will.

I started the diet on Tuesday and experienced constant headache since then. I thought it was my body withdrawing from sugar, because I used to eat so many sweets. I drink lots water and took tylenol which helped but didn't eliminate the headaches. I decided to give my body just a bit of sweet to balance out the headache and it helped alot. I decided to take the diet slow, its a big shock to restrict all sugars when its used to having them. I hope this doesn't effect the weight loss too much!

I'm on P1- day 3 and also have been feeling crappy. Glad to hear that it isn't just me... and that it will go away sometime. In the meantime, I am popping the advils as needed. They have a sugary tasting coating, hope they don't screw up the diet!

Nobody else mentioned stomach sickness or dizziness - two things I have also experienced since starting SB, though not as chronically as the headaches. Happily, neither of these is affecting me today (so far).

Good luck to all!

Cheryl :)

I wonder if it's those of us who were sweet hounds that are having the worst time of it. I have craved sweets my whole life...esp. chocolate but in my later years I've found pastries that have glazed icing on them to be also yummy. In the week bofore I started SB I really indulged in the chocolates and all those rich Christmas foods. I wonder if it is the dramatic withdrawl of all that sugar and carbs in addition that causes this headache. I've had it for five full days now (on day six of Ph#1) and was hoping it would be gone by now. I also have the dizziness but it's not really like reguar dizziness, more like light headedness where suddenly my eyes can't focus and I get all spun-out. Fortunately I work out of my home which makes it easier for me to deal with this so called "SB Flu"... I feel badly for those who have to drive to work and spend the day with a headache and spinny head. Buffered ASA has worked well for the headaches and once the headaches are gone the light headedness is much less. Maybe for those who have stomach troubles, try a "Buffered" product to protect your stomach lining.

I have been feeling crappy ever since Tuesday when I start Ph1. Today was day 3 and I gave in and had a pear!! and it was just what my body needed b/c I felt great afterwards. I even worked out cardio 30 minutes after that and felt great. I decided and this is just me, that I will skip the rest Ph1 and jump in Ph2. Ph1 was just not suiting my body and I was feeling terrible. To me no diet is worth going through 3 day headaches. I think Ph2 will work for me better. I might not lose the initial 8 to 13 but atleast I won't feel horrible. Hopefully I will still lose by following Ph2 and exercising.

I can certainly sympathize with you Parminder. I also have a cold virus so I can't tell what is the virus and what is the diet so I guess I'm going to trudge through it as best as I can. I haven't been drinking milk but rather eating cheese and it wasn't helping so I did as you did and had a yoghurt (one of those tiny Minigo) and felt better within minutes. I'm not going to do that often though as I don't want to screw up Phase 1 competely. I have a LOT of weight to lose (about 100-125lbs) so I want to get in as much as I can in Phase 1 to keep my spirits up.

Best of luck moving to Phase 2 Parminder :D

Probably the reason Excedrin works is that it contains caffeine. If you really want to get off caffeine, you should try another pain reliever.

My wife and I are both on our 3rd day of P1 and we both have headaches today. Sucks, but hey, asprin is your friend.

Aside from that, I feel pretty good. I haven't eaten this well since... well, since a very long time.
