Hi everyone! This looks like a very friendly site, I want to start with SBD this monday, I just finished the "Negative Calorie diet" and lost 5 lbs in a week. I was curious about the SBD because in fase 1 there are no fruits allowed, can someone tell me why??? thanks.

If you reread the book there is probably a better explanation in there. But basically P1 is a short term, fairly low carb eating approach that is designed to help you get food cravings under control and to start to better manage your blood sugar / insulin response patterns throughout the day. (It also often results in some quick water weight loss, but this is not the real primary goal of P1 from Dr. A's perspective.) So all sugars, alcohol, other high GI foods, and "empty calorie" foods basically come out of your diet for two weeks except for a few left in milk and some veggies like tomatos. After 2 weeks of this, then he feels your body is ready to start reintroducing the good carbs and naturally ocurring sugars in healthy foods, which are necessary for a truly healthy eating program, in some fruits (low GI still preferred) and most whole grains back into your diet . So it is just a temporary thing to reduce the sugars which might trigger insulin responses and resulting cravings (i.e. hunger attacks) that could result in a binge on foods that would be detrimental to your overall goals.

I don't know what the negative calorie diet was like, but if you already lost the water weight on that which it sounds like you have, then I wouldn't really expect to see another 8-10 lbs. on P1 in SB if you are thinking you are going to add 1 + 1 and get 2. From a water weight loss perspective, you've probably already achieved much of that already. Some people just start in P2 as they feel it is overall a more healthy way of eating and that is true. P1 was never intended to be anything more than a short term way of eating to achieve a few specific goals very quickly. It was never intended to be the primary way of eating on SB. So you could try P1 if you like and think you still need to get a handle on leveling your blood sugars during the day/night and reducing cravings, or you could try it as maybe a modified P1 keeping 1 low GI fruit in your plan if you feel you really can't give it up and you think cravings aren't really a problem for you at this point and see how it goes for you that way.

Is there a reason you're jumping from diet to diet? SB is intended as a lifestyle change eating program. It works best when it is adopted as a way of eating for the rest of your life and you practice it consistently and continuously over a long period of time. I know I would still like to probably lose up to another 10 lbs, but I also realize it may take a long time to do that and I'm not willing to put added pressure on myself in terms of unrealistic time frames to do so. At a current avg. rate of .5 - 1.0 lb per month it may take me another year or so to lose that last ten or they may never come off. At this point I am mostly just "listening" to my body and letting it guide me to a certain extent. When "it" is ready, I am hopeful that I will still lose a little more at some point. But if I don't, I know that I am still eating in a very healthy manner and am happy that I can be sustaining and maintaining where I am now without feeling deprived or anything or feeling like I am really restricting myself of anything in particular.

Good luck! hope you found some useful info somewhere in the midst of all my sunday morning ramblings!!

Thank you very much Redroxco, I really appreciate the time you took to answer me, this kind of support is the support I needed in order to get on track.

I would like to tell you I little bit about myself and the “history of my weight loss”. Since a child, I’ve kind of been chubby, next to fat, but when I got married at 25 I became more aware of nutrition and eating habits. I’m 5’ tall and weighed at that time 142 lbs, I exercised regularly doing aerobics mostly and swimming. I also read more about nutrition and became more conscious of eating habits. So I managed to lose 19 lbs, and got to 123 in 2002. I gained weight again these last 6 months to 130 so, and tried to cut back on bad things, (sweets, coffee, bread, corn etc), but nothing seemed to work, I kind of hit a plateau. I got stuck. So then I thought I will do something drastic to make my body work normally again, so I tried the “Negative Calorie Diet” for a week to restart a healthy eating plan, that’s why I’m interested in the SBD.

I totally agree with you in making it a way of life, that is precisely what I’m looking for.

Thanks again.

:D
