My mom has just discovered that she has gallstones (went for an ultrasound after a couple terrible attacks). She wonders if they could be a result of her weight loss. She's been in P2 for about three months, I think. She's lost 22 pounds so far (10 during P1). Would that be considered "rapid"? Rapid weight loss is apparently associated with the formation of gall stones.
Anyone have any experience with this?
Thanks! |

No experience here, but 22 pounds in 3+ months doesn't seem that rapid to me.
However, 10 pounds in 2 weeks of p1 is fairly rapid, so maybe that's the problem?
I hope she feels better soon! |

| 3 months is normally 13 weeks. 22 lbs in 13 weeks averages out to a shade under 1.7 lbs per week. Most health professionals consider a healthy weight loss rate to be in the 1 - 2 lb per week range. So she looks like she is right in that range. A lot of that early weight loss is water weight loss that is common to starting many different diet programs, not just SBD. While I guess you can't rule it out as a possibility, I tend to think SBD has had little to do with the formation of her gallstones. |

Here is what I know: I went to a surgeon last week for a tiny little gallstone. From what I understand, heavier people are more likely to develop gallstones and yo-yo dieting is also a risk factor for developing gallstones.
Although I am not having any problems or symptoms, I was told that as I lose weight, my gallstone is more likely to bother me.
Good luck! |

| My son was following the Atkins diet (very fatty with lots of butter and creme) and developed gall stones. If you are following SBD and eating beans and other good carbs, then maybe there is another reason for the stones? |
