My hubby wants to start SB with me on Monday but he is Hypoglycemic. Does anyone here have this problem, If so does the diet affect it in any way? He has pretty nasty episodes when his blood sugar crashes and I don't want to take any chances.. but he doesn't want to talk to his Doctor... Any help would be appreciated!

If anything, SB should help to keep him from having blood sugar crashes. My dr. told me that i should eat something every 2 to 3 hours to stabilize blood sugar, and that goes along pretty well with SB. You have breakfast, snack, lunch, snack, dinner, dessert. So you're eating 6 times a day. And I've read a lot around here that if you have a fruit or something as a snack to have cheese or pb or nuts with it to help prevent an insulin spike.

You might tell him to skip P1 though. I had problems with it...In the middle of my second week I got sick. Dizzy, etc. Not good.

If you're insurance company offers a nurse-line, you might talk to someone there about SB.

Good luck!

Hi Mom2Angel,

Welcome to the South Beach ... I skipped phase 1 as well and have not regretted it. Lots of people, especially diabetics like me, have problems with phase 1 and thus are advised to move on to phase 2.

I am assuming that your husband is not diabetic but is eating a lot of the wrong kinds of carbs and then crashing after having a big spike in his blood glucose level following a meal. If he is diabetic, he may need to work with his doctor to lower his diabetic medication once he starts living the South Beach way of life.

You might find the following article interesting. While the author is advocating something called the Shape Up Plan, he does address the question about the right diet for hypoglycemia in the article:

His advice is fairly consistent with how we eat on the South Beach Diet.

Mom2Angel - I'm hypoglycemic; when I read the book the 1st time, alot of the things in it sounded very similar to what I was told to do in the 80s to control it (3 meals, 3 snacks, protein with at least 2 meals and 1 snack, etc). I did P1 because I had been eating very crappy foods and needed to stop (with food, when I was craving something, I HAD to eat it. Doing P1 got me out of that need).

I've been told hypoglycemics shouldn't do P1, but (at least to me) it was similar to the diet they put me on when I was first diagnosed to get the hypoglycemia under control. I did increase my snacks for the first week, but I didn't eat a snack after dinner (they cause cravings for me), so it seemed to balance out. The first couple of days I had headaches, but I also stopped drinking Pepsi cold turkey at the same time (I stop drinking caffeine 2x a year to get over the addiction to it); I wouldn't do THAT again. But since I've been on SB, I haven't increased my consumption of pepsi to over 1/day, and this is the time of year that I usually run the 2nd cold turkey b/c I'm drinking 5-6 servings/day, so SB has definitely helped me eliminate the cravings, and the need for caffeine to "perk up".

The only other thing I would keep in mind is the fruit...I have only added in bananas into my diet (I've been beaching for almost 6 months now); in the summer I also had blueberries, but I find that adding any other types of fruit causes me to spike and crash...but we're not supposed to have too much fruit, anyway. I depended on nuts and cheese to get me through P1, now I have triscuits and laughing cow :) although the nuts are still around, just not as frequently eaten!

Good luck to both of you :)
