ABSOLUTELY! you can do it! Its not like any other "diet" you've tried before. If you can make it through Phase 1, you are on your way to a sexy new body. Good Luck!

If you have hideous willpower... you might want to forget that extreme of a goal and promise yourself that you'll be healthier and slimmer for that trip instead. Keeping your goals realistic and within reach is a great motivator here at the beach. I go for mini-goals of 5 pound increments.

Welcome... and good luck!

Thanks Lynda and Jamie - I am just hoping I can stay focused this time around...so far, day one is good - no hunger pangs or cravings yet. Having greek steaks with the hubby for dinner tonight - yum! I think you are right about the mini goals, Lynda....I love nothing more than a massage so I think I am gonna treat myself to a professional massage every time I lose 10 pounds...I would like to do every five pounds instead but unfortunately I have limited funds! Maybe a massage for every 10 pounds and a manicure for every 5?? I know, I am getting too hopeful now, aren't I? Gotta keep my head down and take it day by day....that is so hard for me though. Thanks again for your support and encouraging posts!

I think the goals you've set are wonderful... here's my own story to keep things in perspective for you.

In my first 8 weeks, I lost 17 pounds, reaching my *do not go above* weight of 180 (from 197).

In the next 8 weeks, I lost a total of only 5 pounds... because I wasn't adding my carbs back in correctly and my caloric intake was too low given my exercise routine.

So, as you can see, it takes some tweaking. But you can do it... we all can. You get to know your body better than ever before insofar as how you process food, what foods you, as an individual, might be sensitive to. By this, I mean, my husband can eat cheese all day long and not gain an ounce. I need to be more careful. Things like that.

Keep coming here and asking questions, get involved with the various threads and you'll learn a lot! Also, it really helps to write a journal, whether here or for real (I keep a for real one). I write down everything I eat, as well as my exercise for the day. Keeps me on track! Then when I need to tweak, I know exactly what I've been doing. No guess-work!

That is a great idea about keeping a journal, Lynda - thanks. Also, I wanted to ask clarification about something you mentioned - you said you stopped losing weight bc your caloric intake was too LOW? I am confused!!

First let me make it clear that this is not a calorie counting program. Nor we do we count carbs. We basically eat using healthy guidelines.

The calorie thing is confusing for many people... let's use easy numbers.

Let's say my start weight is 100 pounds... to maintain this weight, I need to take in 1000 calories per day. To lose weight, I need to take in 900-950 calories per day. However, if I eat below 900 calories per day, my body will revert to starvation mode and hang onto every morsel it gets.

Now I've lost weight and I weigh 90 pounds... to maintain, I need 900 calories. To lose, I need to take in 800-850 calories. See?

As you begin to lose weight, you need to adjust your calories accordingly. I made 2 mistakes. I never adjusted my calories. I kept eating the same size portions which equalled more calories. You eat more than you expend, you gain weight. You eat enough to sustain your weight, you hit a stall.

I also work out. I burn off more calories than a non-exerciser does. So, I also needed to adjust my food intake for that, which I had not been doing.

Does it make sense?

Yeah, like Lynda has said there is some trial and errors, and a little tweaking along the way. I've been sustaining for the last 2 weeks and have had to rearrange some meals this week. I was back down this morning and I forsee a loss in the next couple of days. Its a slow and steady race towards a wonderful finish line!

Okay that makes sense to me, Lynda...but when you are eating too few calories will your body alert you with hunger pangs? I need some pretty overt signals from my body unfortunately! I just wanna make this eating plan as simple as possible so I am more likely to stick with it...and congrats on getting off the plateau, Jamie - keep going!!

Lynda that's brilliant!! Probably all over the boards and it didn't hit me until now, but . . . brilliant!!! Now I think know why I all of a sudden started moving down again! And QUICKLY too! I'm going to keep that in mind with my next stall. Brilliant!!

Not getting enough calories doesn't mean you're not eating enough foods to keep you satisfied. We eat a lot of veggies here, so although they fill us up, they are relatively low in calories. I wasn't feeling hungry at all during my stall. Plus, it takes a really long time to get over the *diet* information we've been taught all our lives, that we need to eat less food. What they meant to tell us, is that we need to eat better foods, not necessarily less.

It's really like a science project. I don't want to make it sound difficult, but you can't expect to just eat the same stuff from day 1 through the end and feel you'll reach your goal weight with no *figuring* involved. You do need to find out what your own personal portions should be to lose weight at a slow and steady rate.

Yosh... it's actually not all over the boards. Again, because we don't *count calories* here. That's why it took me so long to figure out. Most of SB is common sense but you do need to figure on the calories in, calories out portion of the program, too. Glad it was a lightbulb for you. :D

berthanoles... our stats are quite similar. May I ask what your height is and how you determined your goal weight?

Hey Lynda - I am actually a shortie - 5' 4". I guess I determined my weight my two methods - one, 140 would be the high end of my recommended BMI - since I usually think charts like those are pretty bunk, I took the high-end mark. Plus I have a medium-size bone frame. Two, I ideally would like to be in a 9/10 and I remember the last time I fit into that size, I was about 140 pounds....now, if I can reach a 9/10 and feel healthy but be more than 140, that is fine with me too!

Yesterday, Day One, was pretty good - I started getting a headache and tad hungry later in the night - about 9:30 but until then, I did okay. Starting with turkey bacon, hot tea, and a boiled egg again today. OH and I do not know if any of you watch Barefoot Contessa on Food Network but if so, she did a DELICIOUS Herbed Baked Eggs dish 2 nights ago - seems SB-friendly and the recipe is on the foodtv website....check it out.

Berthanoles, I fought a headache in the first week of phase 1 for 4 days straight, just couldn't get rid of it. Imagine it was my body purging out all the sugars and other crap. Just wanted to let you know that having a headache or feeling tired/weak at first is not all that uncommon but it does pass quickly enough :D

P.S. I'm 5'3 and at my current weight I'm fitting into a size 8/9. At 140 you should easily be in a loose 9/10!

Thanks Jamie - the headaches have pretty much past now but I still have a couple of weak moments each day. This weekend - my first since starting SB - was tough and I will admit I cheated a few times. First, I had some red wine Friday night and I ate way too many pistachios both Friday night and Saturday. Also, on Saturday we went to a party and I avoided the tortilla chips, crackers and cheesecakes like the plague - HOWEVER, I did indulge in a small glass of red wine and 2 big juicy strawberries. So I guess this is my confession...I am back on the strict SB Phase 1 regimen today and hope I did not do too much damage this weekend with my cheating...I weigh in for the first time on Wed. so we'll see! I have been missing these message boards the past two days - they are such a big help and information source. Thanks again to everyone!

Further proof of Lynda's theory that all the beautiful people are here on The Beach! Dang girl... you're hot! I can't wait to see your amazing "after" photos!

My birthday is in July too... the 12th. I'm a wee bit older than you though (I'll hit 33 in 2005).
