I had one of the worst reactions yesterday. I helped my mom, who started SBD last week, make the black bean chocolate cake with Splenda. I've been avoiding Splenda because when it first came out, I made biscotti with it, and nobody in my family liked it. It also gave me a stomach ache. We made the cake yesterday, cut it into 16 pieces, cut 1 piece into 4 pieces, less than 1 bite each, and since there was no flour in the cake, I thought I'd try it. Within 1 minute, I had a horrible headache. I barely made it home (less than 1 mile). I couldn't wait to take off my shoes, it felt like me feet were swelling. Then the muscle cramps started, EVERYWHERE! Even my fingers hurt. I lost coordination, and got the 'traveling itchies'. My tongue was burning. The skin on my legs was burning. I started drinking water, 28 ounces in 1 hour. I continued drinking lots of water the rest of the day. They symptoms started going away, but not completely. This morning my arms feel like I was lifing heavy weights, and my tongue still doesn't feel quite right, my legs are still burning, too.
I know it was the Splenda, as there was nothing else in the cake that I haven't eaten regularly on SBD.
Won't do that again!
Hugs,

{{{{{Burdle}}}}} I am so sorry you had such a reaction!
Have you tried Stevia? I am trying to make the change-over from Splenda and finding it to be quite good. |

Geez, the worse that's happened to me as a result of any artificial sweetener is that I get wicked cravings, much more so that with natural sugar. I very rarely use sugar but if I do, depending on the purpose, I just might stick with natural sugar instead of faux sugar.
Hope you're feeling better, your beaniness... :( |

Thanks, I'm feeling much better today, still a little shakey, tho.
I've been using Stevia for over 15 years. I was told years and years ago by a holistic doctor to drink an herbal naturally sweetened tea by Wisdom of the Ancients called Yerba Mate' Royale'. The box used to just say 'natural herbal leaf sweetener', but the last box I bought says 'Stevia' I also have the liquid extract, I tried the powdered and didn't like it at all. Problem with the extract, hard to bake with as you don't have the volume and texture of sugar, and it is difficult to tell how much to add unless you taste the batter. So, I don't bake much any more, only twice in 10 months, because if I bake it, I eat it! Too much, of course.
Thanks for the hugs, Paris, I needed them.

| :o Wow, Burdle! something like that happened to me about 4 weeks ago. I lost my depth perspective, I was staggering when I tried to walk, my vision was blurred, and I had Killer Headaches! My Dr. sent me to a neurologist who in turn had me have an MRI with dye of the brain. They found nothing. Blood tests done:nothing. Went for ultrasound this morning:nothing. I feel pretty much allright now, except that my vision is still messed up. Next stop: opthamologist. I wonder if this was a reaction to something new? The only thing I've added is a few chocolate covered expresso beans (from the HFS) Also, this " strangeness" lasted about 2 1/2 weeks. I was taking down mailboxes with my SUV... I hit someone in a parking lot, and couldn't see at all at night. Good thing I have plenty of insurance! |

Hey, Paula. Sounds to me like you might have had a powerful chemical exposure...on top of all my food allergies, I am extremely chemically sensitive. An alternative health care practitioner who used kinesiology might be able to check you for a chemical exposure...think back, did you smell something nasty before this happened? Perhaps an allergist who deals with the chemically sensitive might help you.
Also sounds to me like you shouldn't be driving until you get this straightened out. I had vertigo 5 years ago for 6 weeks, never did find out why...couldn't drive, couldn't even turn my head without falling over. It was like being on a roller coaster without ever leaving the ground. Not fun.

:( Yeah, Burdle, come to think of it, about ten years ago I had a bad toxic reaction to a chemical in a stain (Minwax) I was using. I went into convulsions, couldn't speak, and wound up in occupational therapy for two years. I couldn't even put a piece of cheese between two crackers; I had to think it out. I forgot all about that. I test drove some new cars... lots of chemicals there...... tried chai tea.. the coffee beans.....nothing else new. Maybe some cleaning agent. Smoke? I had the fire dept. over here a few weeks ago because the chimney backed up....... they used some chemical to douse the fire ( in the chimney) That could well be it! Good suggestion, Burdle. I will follow up on that. I hope you are feeling better.

| Paula, were you on any new/different medications at the time? I had something similar a month or so ago taking Keflex (I'm allergic to penicillin and shouldn't have been given Keflex in the first place). I felt like I was spinning like a top and my eyes were twitching and stuff. |

Paula, you've got lots of possibilities...chai tea has many spices in it, spices are potent meds, they can heal, they can also harm if you can't handle them. And test driving new cars...Wow, chemical soup! Powerful petroleum derivitives, takes me months and months to gas off a new car. Since you've had previous extreme chemical exposures, I'd look into that aspect. Also, everyone I know that has petroleum sensitivities also has trouble with grains, esp. wheat! Seems the same body systems that handle petroleum detox also handles the digestion of grains, but no doctor will tell you that!
Send me a PM if you'd like info on finding a good specialist in the field of chemical sensitivities...I've been dealing with the problem for 22 years!

Burdle: Have you ever tried Sucanat? It is derived from sugar cane juice, looks kinda like brown sugar (larger crystals and not moist though) and measures the same as regular sugar. I haven't been able to find out the GI number, but used it in apple crisp and a wwgraham cracker crust with no cravings. No real texture difference in baking, if memory serves correctly (used to use it regularly when DD#1 had ADHD issues from refined sugars).
Look for it in health food stores - they have a website too
http://www.wholesomesweeteners.com - so you can check with them to see if there is a local distributor
Good luck - that really is too bad you've got so many sensitivities to foods. Feel well soon! :)

Thanks, Karen...I used to work in a healthfood store! Pre-SBD, all I used was Sucanat for baking, olive oil and whole grain (whole wheat) pastry flour, too. I'm guessing that Sucanat's GI is about the same as white sugar, but because it has such a strong brown sugar flavor, much less can be used, so fewer grams of sugar ingested. Whole Foods and Trader Joe's both carry Sucanat. I used to make the best Cornmeal Coffee Cake and Banana Cake using Sucanat, olive oil, and ww pastry flour...but I'd rather be thin!
Just bought my first ever size 4 blouse yesterday...YIPEE! Me, a size 4? Who'd a thunk it!
Feeling much better today,
Hugs,
Burdle
