I want to begin the South Beach Diet but I am lactose intolerant and do not like to use the lactaid pills. Would it be possible to substitute soy cheese/milk for the recipes and snacks?

Yes, you can use soy products, but you need to find no sugar added soy milk, and use low fat soy cheeses, which I think most are anyways.
I eat no dairy...

Hi I too suffer from lactosse intolerance, I went to see a dietician/nutritionist who gave me a list of what foods are acceptable to eat. I now have my intolerance under control. The key is too eat small amounts of dairy and not to over do it. I am now able to have whatever I want.
I recomment yogurt since it has live bacterial cultures (read the label) this digests the lactose for you. Also, hard cheeses are ok to eat. Milk is ok as long as you don't have more than 1 cup, and try cream in your coffee. Since I'm on this diet I am using evaporated fat free or 1% milk. This is causing no gas or symptoms. I hope this helps, the only thing that really kills me is pizza & ice cream which I am having none of during this diet

Hope this helps :D

I usually drink lactaid in place of milk and it has helped me. I have a minor case of lactose intolerance (ice cream, whole milk get to me mostly) Yogurt is fine with me, but I still feel tiny bit bloated. Cheese are okay with me for the most part. I don't eat too much of it though, unless it's a tiny bit of parmesan or cheddar for a little flavor.

:( I started this diet yesterday and already I am having problems. Can I cut out all the cheese without upsetting the balance too much? I can't have soy either. I am lactose Intollerant and have IBS and CFS/ME. I am hoping this diet will help me stabalize things.

I was so glad to finally find some posts about milk allergie-well, you all seem to be lactose intollerant, I am allergic to the protein in milk....I can't get near the stuff or
I am new to this site and the SB diet. But very familiar with all the soy products out there-cannot eat many of the cheeses as they have "caseine" a milk protein bi-product.
Let's keep each other posted on what we find out :!:

Healthy2b,
is there a difference from dairy cow milk and cheese and goats milk and cheese? :?: If there is this might be something all of you could look into. I know that Food Lion sells goat cheese. It is more expensive, of course, but if you can have it with out the symptoms  it might be worth it

Yeah, for some people there are- don't know about lactose intolerant but it would be something worth checking into.
20 years ago I was able to get away with goat but not anymore due to severity of the allergy.
Thanks though- it may be a good option for some

I'm doing South Beach and I'm not just intolerant, I'm allergic to dairy. I don't eat it, period.

Is there some rule that you have to eat cheese, yogurt or milk on SB? The recipes are just suggestions, remember.

And remember that SB is really for the rest of your life. So if you can't eat dairy any other time, you shouldn't do it now. There are a lot of other ways of getting protein -- meat, fish, beans, lentils, soy, nuts, etc. There are some recipes that really require cheese (or a soy-cheese substitute), but many that include cheese can be made perfectly fine without it.
