My husband and I have seriously discussed both quitting smoking. Although he is not joining me on SB, he is a much heavier smoker then I am, averaging 2-3 packets per day. I on the otherhand do not smoke during work hours, only in the evenings and weekends so I probably average 1 pack of ultralights every 2-3 days. He is a driver and thus has open opportunity to smoke his heart out all day long in his truck.

We've both concluded that smoking just makes us feel icky most of the time plus buying carton after carton of smokes is burning up our cash.

My question is, has anyone doing SB had success in quitting smoking? I know that I can overcome the urges much like I have overcome my urges to eat sweets, breads, and candy on SB but I'm frightened that quitting now could impede the success that I've had with my weight loss thus far :( As many say, quitting smoking makes you gain weight but is that from the toxins or is that from people then substituting food for having a cigerette.

Should we also consider some sort of quit smoking aid (i.e the patch, gum, meds)... Just need some practical advice and personal experience to get us going in the right direction hopefully.

Me and my husband quit smoking nearly three months ago. He doesn't need to lose weight (actually quite the opposite) but one of the triggers that made me get on SBD was the extra weight after quitting smoking (although I had extra weight before).

I wouldn't be worried though, because most of the weight I gained after quitting was water retention and one way to stop yourself from gaining much weight would be to monitor what you eat. Now, if you have already been on SBD you shouldn't have that much trouble with cravings etc. than someone whose blood sugar levels keep fluctuating.

We weren't such a heavy smokers to begin with as we both only smoked about half a pack a day. We did use the Nicotinell gum 2 mg (by Novartis) and it helped a lot at first. If it is available there, I suggest the licorice. Earlier we have tried Nicorette gum but that stuff is like chewing on cement... Anyway, we only used the gum for about two or three weeks slowly reducing the intake to a one gum per day. After that we traded it to regular gum. Two days after that were the worst but not unbearable.

I'm sure you can do it!! I hardly even think of cigarettes anymore (okay, rarely) and I'm really glad I quit! I have so much more energy and my asthma symptoms have gone almost completely. And now after almost two weeks on phase one, I'm starting to slim again!!

I started SBD in April and quit smoking in June. SBD had erased my food cravings and I wasn't prepared for the nicotine cravings -- they mast hunger pangs. I panicked. Everybody (and I do mean everybody) advised me to focus on quitting smoking and to worry about losing weight after I got my quit under control. That's what I did. I focused on my quit and now I'm 150 days smoke-free.

However, I gained all 16 lbs back. I started back on SBD a month ago and have lost 10 lbs. I feel so much better now. I'm smoke-free and I'm losing weight... now I just have to get back in shape and I'll be fine. :)

Educate yourself before laying down the smokes. Be prepared. Personally, I think quitting smoking is the BEST thing you can do for yourself. The weight? That's important too, but don't keep smoking for fear of gaining weight.

I was on Wellbutrin for a couple of months -- my partner who quit with me is still taking it. She was a 2 to 3 pack a day smoker too. I averaged about a pack a day.

I understand how you feel. I reached my goal about 2 months ago and DH and I are talking about quitting on Jan 1. I'm concerned about weight gain too, but my approach is going to be eat strictly P2 foods during the first 2 months or so, so even if I eat more than I should, I'm eating healthy food. I hope that the weight doesn't come back!

In the past we've used the Commit lozenges. I highly recommend them over the gum. You get so sick of chewing with the gum, but with the lozenge, you just have to suck on it, no chewing involved! Plus you have something for your mouth to do, something you don't get with the patch. The only downside is it can give you gas... but I've been able to counteract that with a Pepcid AC every day.

I just quic smoking or well have been good for a month, I almost feel like being a smoker for three years is like being an alchoholic you are always a smoker or an alocholic but you are not not indulging in those practices. Shortly after not smoking I chose to go on the SBD, because it is helping me to focus on something different than smoking. I also think it is very valuable b/c once I stopped smoking I realized that I was masking a lot of my emotions through smoking and wasn't dealing with them head on, so combined with the SBD, the gym came in handy to releive alot of day to day stress.

Goodluck, and as I saw on an Oprah show it takes the body only 7 days to start really recovering from smoking.

Good Morning all,
Well I now have to reveal my profession, I am an ex-smoker, who quit & became a registered respiratory therapist & a certified pulmonary function technologist. :P So I've been there & done that . I was the most militant smoker, smoked while ppl were still eating, smoked where ever I wanted.
When I quit ,I had made up my mind & quit cold turkey, no help; unless you call my DH trying to get me to start again as help??!! That made me so mad ;I really was going to quit then to spite him :x
I used mind imagery- when I lit up I imagined that I was physically ill from smoking. Every time ,I thought that . Really it is so very bad for you , it wasn't hard to conjure up the terrible things it was doing to me. I also had decided to go to school for RT, & could not see myself going into a room of a patient who is dying of lung cancer ,as I reeked of cig. smoke.
It did not make sense to spend all that $$ on something that would end up killing me!! :oops: I now test ppl for lung disease. It breaks my heart to see all the ppl I test as pre-operative b/4 they have their cancer surgery or chemo tx.
So please SBD friends ,quit now !! :? Your family & friends deserve to hug you for many more years :) Don't deprive them of that. And don't make me draw blood or test you too. :cry:

5 years ago I gave up smoking and lost 40lbs I was always so proud of my self for that. It was like I was proving everyone wrong you can loose weight and give up smoking.
Then about 2 years later the nicotine monster got me again and it took until May of this year to quit again..............over the last few weeks I have strated puffing VERY occasionally maybe 2 one day, none the next 1 the next - it is so stupid.
I gave up with the Allan Carr 'easy way to stop smoking book' both times it is really good, informative but not brainwashing.................
Irish Gal wow what a job, perhaps all smokers should be made to do that job...........

Hales, what is that book like? Is it all touchy-feely get in touch with your emotions type of book? I did a quick search on one of the non-smoking boards I'll be re-joining soon and people did have good things to say about it. Thing is I won't respond to it if it's too "new-agey".

Is it available in US bookstores?

WOW!! I am really surprised by that. Sure it's the same one. Allan Carrs the 'easy way to stop smoking' I guess there can't be 2? right?
I didn't think it was at all new agey unless it has dramaticly changed in re print for the american market - it is origanally a British book.
Mine was printed in 1991 so it is very old but I still refer back to it - not that I have in a while...........which is probably while the wicked weed has be in it's grasp again! :x

It is the same one! I guess if something works it doesn't matter what side of "the pond" it's from! It's available on Amazon and ships in the same amount of time as any other US book. I may stop by B&N at lunch today and see if they have it. Thanks for the recommendation!

My husband and I quit smoking September 27th and started SB shortly thereafter. We were Hypnotized and it worked GREAT!! NO CRAVINGS, NO BAD MOODS, NO NOTHING EXCEPT WEIGHT GAIN!!! The weight gain is going to happen because your metabolizim is going to slow way down!! Other than that, I would recommend going to a Hypnotist!! This was a great experience
