Does anyone hear have a wheat allergy? As a result of South Beach, I learned that I am allergic to wheat. Even a small amount will affect me. I can eat non-wheat gluten though.
In the long run, dieting is easier when you can't eat wheat. It's everywhere! But, I do get frustrated when I'm looking for something new to add to my menu and everything has wheat in it. |

Hi, Tracy. I, too, found out from being on SBD that I am allergic to wheat. I've done without since January. You are right, it is everywhere! I stick to quinoa, brown and wild rice and barley. I've even used quinoa flour occasionally, but find I eat too much if I bake with it, so no more baking.

| I have noticed that since I have been on the SBD I no longer have sinus drainage. I may have a wheat allergy. What do you eat inplace of the wheat? |

Imagine phase 1 with fruit and rice added. That is pretty much my life since learning about my wheat allergy. I still need a mild decongestant for hayfever, but I haven't gone to bed with a sinus headache since May and I was doing that constantly last winter. My life is so much improved since eliminating wheat that it makes up for the loss of almost every processed food known to man.
I do whimper audibly when I pass a package of Pecan Sandies though. |

hi!!
I just started the SB diet yesterday, but I have been eating wheat free for sometime. I have an intolerence to gluten so I thought Ishould post here. For those of you concerned that you may have a wheat alergy, you may want to look into gluten intolerence. A lot of people are actually intolerent to the gluten in wheat ( not just the wheat) you would also need to avoid, barley, oats, rye, spelt and some other grains.
If you want to find out more about gluten intolerence check out this forum!

i hope you find this helpful!!

P.S.
Tracy, look for pamala's cookies!! You may find them at the grocery store or health food store. They are all wheat free and there are even pecan shortbread cookies that are to die for!! I obviously can't have them now  but if you are past stage 1 I think you could splurge!! ( beware, though they are GOOD!! |

Since being tested about 2 months ago and learning I'm Celiac, I've had to make dietary adjustments to avoid gluten. Luckily I'm very satisfied with my quinoa concotions and flaxseed muffins/pancakes. And for Thanksgiving, I look forward to a little wild rice. Keep hunting! There's lots of yummy foods to eat that don't contain wheat. Get yourself some non-wheat flour and start experimenting. :)

Same here. Day 1 of P2 I had a ww pita and felt like I was going to die. I tested gluten intolerant/celiacs (and from there found out my 3 kids are also and my sister and one nephew...could be more but no one else bothered to get tested.)
Since quitting the gluten I've stopped having headaches EVERY DAY, stopped having migraines 5-12xs a month, I now have little to no allergy symptoms (no more meds every day!) and, omg, the most profound change is how good I feel.
I've found it pretty simple to eat gf while on SB. I do P2 with the only grains being rice and quinoa. Unfortunately I learned early that rice and quinoa also trigger cravings in me, so I have to avoid them except at dinner time. Because of my kids, I have had to learn to bake/cook/whatever using gf flours. I'm hooked on bean flours (soy and chickpea) for breakfasty items (the added proteins are incredibly filling and satisfying.) Also, at one point in P2 I spent a great deal of time analysing (to death) the calories/glycemic index/glycemic load/etc of soft corn tortillas (I found corn did NOT cause cravings in me.) Eventually, I decided to use them randomly because I was dying for something sandwich-like (my kids use these for rollup sandwiches every day for school.) The other concession I made was eating Cream of Buckwheat cereal (because NO gf cereal is high in fiber and I really wanted something warm.)
The funniest thing I've found about being gluten intolerant and on SB is that, after a few reactions to eating something with gluten, I have NO desire to eat what I shouldn't. Avoiding pizza? Easy! Donuts? No problem. Beer? *sniff* Won't touch the stuff.
Good luck and congrats on finding out you have this problem now. My father died 2 years ago from complications caused by undiagnosed, untreated celiacs, it's not a good thing to be oblivious to. |

I found the following 2 books extremely helpful:
Dangerous Grains by James Braly, MD and Ron Hoggan, MA
Against the Grain, the slighly eccentric guide to living well without gluten or wheat by Jax Peters Lowell
the first book explaines why so many people are grain intolerant. The second book helps a lot with eating out and travel, and has many mail order sources.

| Burdle, I sure hope I'm NOT allergic to wheat, but a funny thing happened. I had been eating All-Bran (just a little) with my morning yogurt, plus two slices of ww bread a day. Yesterday and today I eliminated wheat from my diet, and I dropped two pounds overnight, plus the bloating and gas I had been plagued with went away. Could this possibly be related to wheat? I checked out the site you put up, and saw nothing about "bathroom problems". Also, I had been having edema in my legs...... that went away, too. What do you think? |

Paula, sounds to me like you are allergic to wheat. Sorry...same thing happens to me, except I lost 3 lbs. in 2 days when I stopped eating wheat. What you are losing is water weight, edema (water retention) caused by the allergic reaction. Make sure you drink lots of water to flush the wheat out of your system.
Good luck,

As an aside about the subject to wheat, and other grains, did anyone see on both FOX and CBS news that farmers often use coke and pepsi as a pesticide on grains? And that plumbers claim it helps to unclog drains? Oh, my poor intestines! I was also reading that since pesticides were sprayed on the outer husk of wheat, (maybe diet coke for the organic farmers?) that is where the pesticides are concentrated. Food for thought.

We used it once at work to unclog a patient's feeding tube (we had heard about this). It worked like a charm. |

| Yecchh! I'm definately going to have to look for an alternative to diet coke. I wonder if that has anything to do with the amount of "poofers" we have here, including me. Back to the wheat problem, I stuck my toe in the water again. A few days ago I made a huge pot of organic spaghetti sauce. (I put that strange Spanish rosemary infused olive oil in...it really does seem to enhance many different foods) I already had the ww spelt and cooked that up. I had a medium, well, maybe more than medium, bowl of the spelt and sauce. It was delicious. The next day, I was up 4 pounds and all bloated. My legs looked like tree trunks. I avoided wheat for that entire day, and the next morning, the extra 4 pounds were gone. So it must be the wheat. Rats! I've also been using Beano with other foods, and the gas is pretty much gone. I wonder if there is some digestive enzyme that is lacking in this WOE.......... |
