Hi,
Are there any vegetarian south beach dieters here that can give tips and advice ?
I don't really mind mind a little chicken but don't really want to have to start having more than that - at the moment I am having quinoa, a little cheese, lentils, beans and chick peas.
Any extras I can have in phase one would be welcomed, thankyou.
 |

| :D Hi. Do you eat soybean products, like Boca Burger, Gardenburger, or Morningstar Farms? I'm a lacto vegetarian (well, I love fish, too) Have you tried any of the bean recipes? |

Hi,
No I stay away from processed foods as much as pos. as I also have insulin resistance in the family so need to be careful there and processed carbs will give me insulin spikes.
I forgot seeds and nuts in the protein list.
No I don't tend to try many new recipes cos I am the only one following this until I can get my head around it, and am running around after a family of 7 and animals all day.
Have you found any which were quick and easy ?
I tried the cheese dessert one but it wasn't v. nice. |

| I know Burdle, our resident Bean Queen, is a complete vegan due to a lot of health issues. She has been very successful at taking the basic tenets of SBD and adapting them to her situation and dietary needs. You could always find a post by her and get to her profile and send her a PM and she might be able to help you with specific issues. |

Thanks, Redroxco, but no need to search for me, I'm here...
I am completely vegan, which does make SBD a bit difficult. I started on P2 because of lack of protein, and altho my SBD journey has been a battle, it was well worth the struggle.
I'd eat as many different veggies as you can. I eat beans for breakfast, either Greek Lima Beans (pizza beans) or Herbed Navy Beans. If there is leftover veggies from the night before, I eat those, but I don't care much for breakfast veggies. I eat a very big salad for lunch almost every day, altho now that the weather here in the Midwest has turned cold, I made my first pot of cold weather soup yesterday...wild rice, mushrooms, carrot, celery, onion and herbed navy beans. With a little added curry powder, it was very satisfying, and I ate way less than a serving of wild rice and beans. I even had 2 bowls...
I eat Soyco brand rice cheese, but I limit my consumption of it because it is high in sodium, no more than 2 servings a day. I also eat quinoa, and occasionally brown rice, but I avoid wheat and soy...food allergies, altho I can tolerate 1 Tofutti brand fudge pop a day, only 30 calories. I try to avoid artificial sweeteners as much as possible, and like you, avoid processed foods.
If you find you don't have enough different foods for P1, and you are past cravings, go to P2. I eat frozen berries for dessert, sometimes with a few nuts. Lately I've been freezing unsweetened rice milk, we find it a good substitute for ice cream, but, of course, it doesn't taste anything like ice cream, but does taste like Rice Dream Frozen Dessert, without all the extra carbs. I limit myself to 1/2 cup as a serving, had it last night with fresh strawberries, quite tasty, but very cold!
Good luck,
Hugs,
Burdle The Been Queen

| I`m also vegan and starting the SBD next week. Can't wait! :) I've been eating way too many soy products and hope the SBD helps me to add variety of other protein sources on my diet. |

You can cook an egg about 10 different ways, or more.. Good luck and let me know how it works out for you.. Wait you said you were a veg? veg's dont even eat the tiniest bit of chicken... you should just say you dont eat red meat, but dont consider yourself a veg. :!: [/quote] |

| If you check out the SBD Cookbook, there's a section with vegetarian recipes and they're really great! |

Im so glad to see this thread!
I too am a veggie (lacto/ovo) and started P1 today.
I assume soy products should be ok right? Tofu, soy based emat substitutes etc. Its going to be hard giving up my soy chips for the first two weeks though
Im glad to see this thread as Im sure its harder for us veggies than meat eaters on this diet.
O/T, anyone know if you can have marinara sauce during P1? |

Your not a vegetarian if you eat the flesh of any animals, including fish. |

Lacto ovo here.
I don't find it hard sticking to my plan, any more than I have with the zillion other diets I've been on over the years.
For example, this Friday we're taking my mother in law out to eat for her birthday at a fish house. Since I know they have chef type salads there, I'll just order the salad and tell them to keep the hard cooked egg but replace the ham and chicken with more shredded cheese.
I eat low fat cheese at home, but don't fret when I eat out. I just do the best I can without getting neurotic over this. My perfectionist attitude over the years only kept me from my goal. In reading the posts on this wonderful board, I find the most successful folks tweak this plan to their needs. Sounds good to me! |
