After reading the book, and some info online, I am under the impression that EVERYTHING is allowed in phase 3. You just have to adjust the rest of your day if you eat something that spikes your blood sugar. Dates do have a pretty high glycemic load, so you may need to eat them in moderation.

I don't think raisens are ever allowed on this program so dates and figs are kind of the same, right?

he mentions in a few places that "forbidden" foods are sometimes used if they really help the taste and the amount eaten in a portion ends up being very small. makes sense.

I quote from Dr. Agatson's book:

"By now you should be at your ideal weight. If you've stuck with the diet, your blood chemistry should also be improved. This is the part of the plan that"s meant to help you maintain the benefits for the rest of your life. Phase 3 is the most liberal stage of the diet..by now it is simply one important aspect of a healthy lifestyle, rather than a weight-loss program. At this point you should be knowledgeable enough about how the South Beach Diet works and how it interacts with your own body to enjoy all the flexibility of the plan. That's why there's no food list for Phase 3. In other words, if you want it, and it doesn't undo all your sacrifices, you should go ahead and enjoy. There will always be times when you overindulge a little, even after years on the diet. There are the times when you'll switch back to Phase 1 for a week or two. You'll get back to where you were and then you'll return to Phase 3. Don't even think of it as backsliding...we designed the diet to allow normal human beings to eat the way they want. If for you, that means having a few too many desserts once in a while, great. Enjoy it"

True. However knowing now that raisens have a high GL, use them sparingly. 8)
