I'm thinking about doing the SB diet, because I am having a hard time losing the baby fat and pre-pregnancy weight, however my son is only 6 months and I won't stop nursing till he's at least a year. Is anyone on the SB and nursing too, I'm worried more about the Phase 1 (ketosis) if it occurs. Please share your thoughts thanks.

Dr A. says that nursing moms needs to start this diet in P2 b/c you need the fruits, milk, etc.
You won't get into ketosis b/c we eat a lot of veggies and in P2 fruits and "good" carbs.
There are a lot of nursing mothers in this board. |

Does he nurse exclusively, or is he eating some solid foods?
I'm nursing my daughter, but only about three times a day now (so not so much for nutrition as for comfort). No problems, but I drank milk and ate lots of veggies during P1. |

Yes, I am nursing. My son is older, 15mo. but still nurses a couple times of day. I started on P1 but felt too run down so switched over too P2 after a week with no problem.
If you go over and check the The South Beach Diet forum. There is a 2 page thread about nursing on SBD. You will find quite a few of us nursing mothers around! :D

Hi I am new to this forum,
I am nursing my son also (exclusively BF and rice cereal once a day)and I am wondering how the SBD has affected the nursing experience. I want to try SBD as I am getting married this Christmas and want to lose 25 lbs :P . I have been on the Atkins diet before and it worked for me quit well in the past. Southbeach sounds much safer especially that it is much easier to follow.
Any advice on where and how to begin??? I am also a nurse that works nights, so how does one work around that?? Thanks! |

Hi rntravlr,
Looks like we have some things in common. I, too, breastfeed my dd and I work the night shift. I've 'officially' been on the diet for 3 weeks now, lost 6 pounds. Can you do it? Yes! Is it hard? Yes!
Here are my suggestions- Try Ph1. Some people might disagree, but it did not affect my milk supply. Take a good prenatal, have your child take his/her vitamins (should be on the trivisol w/flouride now). Eat LOTS of veggies, mix 'em up... eat LOTS of cheese/dairy/ high calcium and high protein foods. Don't worry about eating more than is recommeded- say 3 veggie quiche cups or extra turkey, etc on your turkey roll up. You need the calories- you are bf and you are up for long periods of time. Also, bring snacks with you to work- and lots of them. I eat my next days 'lunch' overnight, have 2 snacks, a snack in the am, breakfast a couple of hours later, and then whatever my overtired body wants, within reason. Don't know about you, but I get about 1 hour sleep during the day when I work the night shift !
As a nurse, you probably know that ketosis is only really harmful if you are diabetic or have kidney problems. ALso, the SBD does not cause ketosis if done properly- so that point doesn't make any sense.
If, on PH 1 you experience exhaustion, lethargy, etc. add the healthy carbs in and go right to PH2.
For the record, I have a friend who bf and is on the SBD and has never had a problem with milk supply

I posted the same question when I started and the answers were very helpful. I always thought that I couldn't diet when breastfeeding and therefore gradually gained weight. After my daughter was over a year, I thought I would give it a try since she eating other foods.
Since I'm impatient and wanted to lose quickly I went through p1. I made sure I was getting at least 100 oz of water/day. My milk went down some but I made it through the two weeks. I lost 8 of the 25 lbs I'm striving to lose. Once I started p2 I added oatmeal for breakfast. I all of a sudden had plenty of milk. I"m now nursing my 14 month old daughter 5X a day and still losing weight. I'm so happy I started this diet. My jeans that were so tight on me last Spring are about to fall off me now!
Good luck! |
