| I am experiencing hot flashes and nightsweats and don't know if this diet is contributing to them. I am in phase 2 and have lost about 18 lbs. I thought that losing weight would help with this problem but it has got worse. Has anyone else had this problem |

One thing that might help you with hot flashes is soy. Any soy product, milk, green soybeans (edemame), anything.
I also take a couple of herbs, even my doctor told me they're OK:
Soy capsules - 1 per day
Black Cohosh - 1 capsule twice a day
and red clover - 1 capsule per day
I also bought some Lavander Body Spray and I spray myself specialy on my back every time I feel the hot flash coming on.
Good luck  |

Hi.I think I read a while back on another forum that changing your diet and making your metabolism work more efficiently can make you feel warmer, so it might be intensifying your hot flashes.
I did the herb thing till I couldn't take it anymore and went on a low dose estradiol(single, bio-equivelent estrogen, this is NOT Premarin) patch with daily progesterone cream. |

| I never had so many hot flashes in my life since starting the SBD. I also have spotting in between periods and even early periods. I do feel tons better eating this way but honestly, I thought I'd never cool off again. It all stopped when I had to go out of town and wound up eating more carbs. I wish that I understood how that all ties together. |

Hot flashes!
If you are just going through Menopause and need help, I agree with a post above that soy might help.
However, I was on a hormone replacement for about a year to help me get through that period. I am off HRT now, and still have hot flashes but they are not that bad. And they are unrelated to the South Beach Diet in my estimation.
Talk to your doctor but I understand there is no harm to be on an HRT for the short term to get through the more troubling symtoms of menopause.
Good luck. |

| Thanks for the great advice! I wish that I could try the herb or Hormone Replacement but I also experience SEVERE migraine headaches with aura and anything that has estogen in will trigger them., even the herbs, according to my doctor. Dealing with the hot flaxhes is trivial in comparison. I so feel soooo much better on the south beach, gaining some self respect back for myself and feeling more in control of my body. the hot flashes are a pain but eventually, I pray that they will supside. |

jeans,
Hang in there, they will pass.
The question is when?
My doctor told me maybe after I'm 60+ years old
In the meantime, I think SBD is very good even if we don't lose a lto f weight. I'm having a lot of trouble keeping the weight off.
I go from P2 back to P1 almost every other week
Hugs, |

Hey There
I believe that even some weight loss is better than none, especially when you are in menopause. This is supposed to be the hardest time to lose weight and we are doing it, so don't get upset if you don't lose as fast as the younger women. |

My hot flashes are worse now too (second week of Phase 1) and I was wondering if SBD is the cause. And after a year free of them, what if periods come back as I've read in some posts? Argh.
Doctors do say that in this stage of life it is hard to lose weight, but I think it's also in this stage when we begin to manifest the high blood pressure, high cholesterol, etc. sometimes associated with age. At least it is in my family.
Guess I just have to persevere, but I'm not happy losing so much sleep to the hot flashes and sweating at night. On top of headaches from either lack of sugar or reaction to Splenda. What a vicious circle! |

It looks like we have something in common. Not sleeping and night sweats. Hopefully this will pass. At least we are losing weight, something positive. I have lost 18 lbs. but I have been stuck at this weight for about 2 weeks now. I hope that I get over this hump. I can handle the night sweats as long as there is a positive to go along with them. |

Hey Jean,
Congratulations on 18 pounds! I wish....
Oh well, I'm still in the second week of P1 and according to the scale I'm down 6 pounds, so I guess that's OK.
I'm really looking forward to P2.
But the not sleeping continues. Last night I was so tired I went to bed around 9:30. But at 1:00 a.m. I just couldn't sleep, alternately hot and cold, and perspiring so much. So I got up and surfed the net for awhile. Played Spider Solitaire. Finally I thought I was tired enough to fall asleep again and thank goodness I did. And I slept until almost 9:00 this morning, so I guess I made up for my midnight madness.
My doctor prescribed a herb that goes by Calms Forte for trouble sleeping. Maybe I should give it a try.
Keep on keeping on Jean. You'll get through that plateau - I know it!

Hello Catwoman:
Thanks for the reply. Keep up the good work, 6lbs. is great. Sorry to hear that your still not sleeping. I sleep but I wake up regularly with a hot flash or freezing. You know the routine----BLANKETS OFF---BLANKETS ON. The minute I lay down I get a hot flash and as soon as I wake up I get one too. Last Jan. my doctor gave me some pills called Dixarit. He told me they were not hormones but would control the hot flashes. They worked like a dream and my hot flahes disappeared. The problem was that I began to gain weight so I decided to research the drug and according to the internet one of the side effects of Dixarit can be weight gain. I chucked the pills and have been going through my menopause naturally. I had gained 15 lbs. so now I've lost that, plus 3 more, thank goodness. My daughter in law is also on the SBD and she is the one who encouraged me to try this diet. She is young and has lost 22lbs to date. We encourage each other now and that seems to help with the support daily. She is very close to her goal and has had a couple of plateaus herself. The plateaus scare me as that is the time when you can become most vunerable and resume old habits.
I do plan to have my Thanksgiving dinner without thinking about my diet (too much). This really shouldn' t be too bad as I haven't cheated yet and still don't plan on going overboard but I do intend on having a small amount of mashed potatoes with my turkey. Dessert , I can pass on, but I love my mashed potatoes and haven't had them in two months.
Take care and have a Happy Thanksgiving!!! :D |

Thanksgiving! I have to say, that scares me Jean. I've been thinking about how I will handle dinner. My step-daughter has invited us to her place for her first "family" dinner and I don't want to disappoint her. I think I can pass on the potatoes, but I want dessert. I really want dessert. I thought cravings were supposed to subside. Not. And one more day till phase 2.
I'm feeling quite discouraged right now because the 6 pounds I thought I'd lost are 4 pounds today. What's with that? Maybe the scale is wrong. I don't know; I didn't binge or fall off the wagon.
Anyway I did sleep a little better, so I feel better all around. Sleep is the key for me I think.
Also, I think I read in some previous posts that you have migraines too. Another thing we have in common. I had two that required the serious medication at the beginning of the diet, but I've managed without it for the rest of the time.
Happy Thanksgiving to you too!

Hello Catwoman:
Try not to fret about your Thanksgiving Dinner, just remember to make wise choices. If you want dessert maybe have half the amount or even a quarter. I think the key is just don't pig out on this kind of stuff. Fill up first on the healthy stuff and you'll be less tempted to stray too far. As for gaining a couple of pounds, I have also gone through that a couple of times and so has my daughter in law. Just perservere as that weight will often dissappear in a day or two. Sometimes I think that it is just water weight. But Please don't get discouraged as you are doing good. Keep it up!!! We must stick together and help each other.
Yes, you're correct, I do have severe migraine headaches and have had since puberty. I actually go numb on 1/2 of my body, my tongue, my hand , my speech gets stupid and I have had memory difficulties which really freak me out. I've been tested and I have Classic migraine with aura . I use Imitrex but I'm also scared of the drug so I often just go it cold turkey. I use a dark room, pray that I sleep and that it goes away. I haven't had a headache since being on the SBD. This is the reason that I must stay away from all estrogen products including herbals. |

Don't know if this will help you girls with hot flashes, but I know it helps me. I sleep on all cotton sheets, all cotton blankets, and all cotton night gown. Even my mattress pad is all cotton. I went thru menopause about 7 years ago, had a hysterectomy 5 years ago. Can't take hormones, they all give me rashes, and I've found my temp levels much more stable on SBD.
Isn't getting old grand?
Hugs,
Burdle
