Yesterday I and another friend took a mutual friend out for her birthday. We went to the Afghan restaurant of her choosing, and I assumed that there would be some offerings that didn't come with rice. As it turned out, the only thing that didn't come with rice was a ravioli type dish.
I've been pretty good for the past nearly one month (Sunday is my 1-month anniversary for SBD), having not only lost 11 lbs but my blood sugars have gone to normal-normal to fasting normal (under 140) all the time, even after meals.
Since I've been so good, I decided to hell with it, I'm not going to not eat. I ordered the lamb kebab, which came with a serving of brown basmatic rice and a nice grilled tomato section. Yum. The meal also included a nice salad (cucumber, tomatoes and lettuce with an Italian-type dressing), and a basket of bread.
I totally ignored the bread, ate my fair share of salad. I also had some of the appetizer we ordered which was a stewed eggplant dish with a garlic yogurt.
So when my entre arrived, I was no longer ravenous. I ate the meat and the tomatoe, and perhaps 1/4 to 1/3 of the rice. I also made a conscious decision that this time I was going to have dessert.
One of the offerings is an Afghan "cheesecake". I put that in quotes because it really bears no resemblance whatsoever to American cheesecake. It's more like a mild cheese that is soaked in a cardamom syrup and dusted with ground pistachios. It turned out to be pretty good as this place has quit dousing all of their desserts in rose water (it's an acquired taste).
Well, the upshot is that my post meal check was 187 -- surprising as I expected it to be higher. What was even more spectacular, was that this morning, my fasting blood sugar was 133!
In the past, a meal like last night's that shoots my blood sugar up means that I'll still be somewhat higher the next morning (like 160 or so).
I'm 1/2 lb up, but that's not a problem for me. I seesaw anyway, so that 1/2 lb will probably be gone again tomorrow.
So what I'm seeing is my body's regaining the ability to bounce back from the insults that I insist on flinging at it. It also shows me that I can indeed have "forbidden" foods now and then and more importantly, I can actually NOT eat the whole thing. At some point, I literally picked up the plate and moved it off to the side and said, "Okay, done." My friends were really impressed!
So that's my success story for today. I'm feeling so proud of myself for doing this! People are starting to notice the weight loss!
Today I'll probably stay closer to Phase I than Phase II, but I've proven to myself that I do have the ability to make the right decisions.
Hope everyone is having a great day!
