| I picked up the Dr. Phil diet book, but I skipped past the psychobabble part and just checked out the menus. It did seem pretty familiar to here, even has an induction phase. But grains and fruit are not eliminated at the beginning, it just seems to be more based on portion control than anything. |

Hey Bamachic ~ Thanks for sharing this. My dad has been reading Dr. Phil's book and says it's really helping him understand why he eats like he does. Anything that will help him get off his crazy yo yo dieting! He wants me to read it next. Like Daddy, like daughter. :)
And CONGRATULATIONS on your most excellent weight loss! |

You go Leisa!
I have watched Dr Phil's UWLC shows and learned quite a bit. As far as I can tell, the SB and Dr Phil diets are pretty much the same. (But don't get Dr Phil's cookbook, the recipes sound disgusting!) |

Devon, maybe it will help dH to read it. Maybe he bought it for him and not you.
I think sb is the healthiest way to eat. But, I do believe that the behavior modifications Dr. Phil has can Help a lot with the beach.
I believe they are very compatible to each other. |

haha the comments on here are hilarious.
I actually bought the Dr. Phil food guide last year around winter quarter after I had already pretty much gained the freshman 15 from the dorm food my first year at UC Davis. I did the 14-day rapid start plan (it has the same idea as phase 1 of SBD, but allows/avoids different foods). It actually worked really well, people told me I looked thinner, and I felt really good about it! Unfortunately after about a week into it my routine was changed somehow and I stopped following it. I really liked it though! It's similar to SBD in that it has stages and promotes a healthy lifestyle. It also really emphasizes portion control, and it tells you exactly how much of each kind of food you can eat at each meal, and you can devise your meal plans according to the model.
I feel like the food guide has everything you need to know about his weight loss challenge, and his main book probably gets more into the "psychobabble," but the food guide gives a short synopsis of each of the 7 "keys to weight loss success" and has some interesting charts (like a food chart similar to SBD "good fats good carbs" book, as well as things like a chart of how eating certain unhealthy things on a regular basis will turn into added pounds by the end of the year).
Anyways, I really like Dr. Phil's diet because its really effective! Very similar to SBD |

Good for you Bri !! Get back on the UWLC and work in the SB - you saw the results and know how it works.
I am now at 144, down another 4 from my original loss. That is only due to the addition of healthier items I have added into my lifestyle.
Thanks to those above you paid congrats to me on my success - even still now I can't believe how far I came - especially now with summer here and proud of the way I look in a bikini. My hubby can't keep his hands off me - he was grabby before, but now ~ OH ME!
When people who haven't seen me in a long time comment on my new image and ask what I did - I proudly tell them. But more than anything my hubby brags like crazy to anyone who will listen about what I did and how proud he is of me. That is wild to me! He is amazing, and he just keeps saying he is so proud of me. He never, EVER, criticized me previously - I did this for me and me only. I love the new me and wouldn't go back to my old ways for anything. |

Dr phil isn't fat, he is like 6'4"! He doesn't have a big gut or anything but he isn't 6'4" and 150 lbs, (scrawny) He is a big guy. I think that is part of the problem with people, they think that if you don't look like you just came from Ethiopia or have deathly anorexia you must be fat!
Dr Phil looks like a tall, healthy guy, when he stands up, he looks like a rectangle, not a tomato!
It makes me wonder how many people on here, especially those trying to lose 15 lbs or less, are perfectly healthy people who have a warped body image due to the unhealthy standards of perfection portrayed in the media. I'm not saying anybody here is like that, because I can't really say unless I meet someone. But I would like to say that a woman is much more attractive with healthy curves.
I justh thought I better stick up for dr phil, as I am sure that being a psychyatrist dr phil's advise is meant more for those seeking a mental boost to help them stick to whatever healthy eating plan they choose, (be it SBD, Canada Food Guide, whatever.) Because I think part of the reason people yoyo diet is because they just try to diet without dealing with whatever issue that is causing them to overeat in the first place! |

I agree with everything you said, muffalo. Personally, I wouldn't take weight loss advice from someone who's never had a weight problem. That's one of the reasons I like Dr A. He admitted in his book that he had a (slight) weight problem when he hit middle age.
Dr Phil has been overweight at times and he admits it: he had to get into shape to promote his book, than a while later his weight crept up again. He is also very active and plays tennis every day and works out on an elliptical - he's probably very fit. |

| I have to update to the early part of this thread. I have been home with pneumonia the past few weeks (yes, weeks) and had the opportunity to watch Dr. Phil and noticed that he has lost a few pounds around the mid-section since I last saw him. If he is following his own advice, then it comes off slowly and that's probably a good thing. |

I think Dr. Phil is getting a bad rap. He is like Dr. A. His primary goal isn't weight loss it is health. And while Dr. A came at it from a cardiologist's standpoint Dr. Phil comes at it from a psychologists standpoint. His diet isn't for those people who got busy at work and at McD for 6 months (like myself). His diet is for the people who are overweight for psychological reasons. The diet plan is there to support his therapy plan. The fact of the matter is that many many people are overweight because of sexual abuse (if I'm fat and unattractive no one will want me and therefore hurt me), or bad body images or a host of other problems. His point is that you have to confront those and fix the real problem within yourself before you can successfully and permanently lose weight. Otherwise even if you lose the weight it will just come back because you still want that fat to hide behind. His therapy plan could easily be used in association with any healthy diet like SB.
And he's NOT fat. He's solid. He is built like MathDude and I expect MathDude to have a similar build when he is Dr. Phil's age. |

I bought the book with every intention of trying his HRC/HY food plan. But, I felt kind of like he explained what the diet was, what the food was and then I was left on my own...
The support system for it isn't nearly as big as it is for SBD so I decided it was most likely a guaranteed flop for me and chose this plan instead. |
