Hi Heather,

One of the perks of SBD is feeling better -- the weight loss is just a bonus.

Well I'm on day 3 and so far so good  I haven't ran away from it yet.I'm waiting for a friend to bring in the book for SBD so I can read it.I'm still trying to figure out the right foods but I have a list I printed off this site for phase 1 and 2 and also the quick shopping list which I carry with me for quick reference.

Day 4 is here and I really have to say this "diet" is going well. I wouldn't even call it a diet. Its kind of a fun challenge to find foods you can eat. I will only weigh in every wednesday. That was my begin day. :D

Well, this is day 1 for me - was diagnosed hypothyroid about 3 years ago together with obstructive sleep apnea (which could be the choking feeling some of you have mentioned - the inside of your throat and your tongue gain weight, too). I gained about 75 lbs. before diagnosis; meds did not help me lose any weight and now I've been on an antipsychotic which PROMOTES weight gain and Type II diabetes (just diagnosed with that). Am switching to a new med in a couple weeks which does not promote weight gain or diabetes and am hoping that, combined with diet and a new exercise program will get the weight off. I'm heavier than I've ever been in my life - need to lose 160 lbs.....a whole, hefty person

Am bound and determined to get back to carrying around one person on my bones instead of two. :?

(((hugs))) I believe you'll be pleased with the difference this way of eating will make in your life. I have increased energy and I've also lost a few pounds. Can't beat that, eh?

I have lost between 6-8 pounds since last wednesday. I try to only weigh myself once a week but with hypo-t you never lose weight and I wanted to make sure it had stayed off. It has ...I'm so happy to have found this diet. My doc. recommeded it and I was hesitant but am very happy with the results.I would like to lose about 10-15 pounds by Christmas just for once when my inlaws take a family pic I can say YEAH I look great and NOT wow look how fat I look.

Hi All! I have been reading posts since I started SB about 5 weeks ago but I have never replied. It is so nice to see so much support for people with hypothyroidism on this forum! I was born without a thyroid and have struggled with my weight my entire life. Last year when I became pregnant with my son while trying to lose weight (that I had gained from my levels being wacky) my TSH shot to 13 and I gained an automatic 10-15 pounds within the first few weeks. I of course gained another 30 with the pregnancy. Anyways, I am now on SB, my son is six months old today and I am working on losing the original weight. I LOVE SB! I feel so much better and my thyroid is staying on the right level. I just wanted to say hello and thank you all for being such a supportive group of people!

I just wanted to remind you guys (you probably already know this) do not take calcium supplements at the same time you take your thyroid medication. Calcium can block the absorption of the thryoid medicine. I usually take my thryroid medication as soon as I wake up and wait at least one hour before eating or taking any supplements. Just an FYI... :)

I didn't know that, thanks!
Pharmacists should tell us these things!

I recently learned that also about the calcium and you should add Magnesium to help absorb the calcium. I take mine after my lunch :)

Thanks for that reminder about the calcium and synthroid not mixing! My doctor didn't tell me that, neither did my pharmacist. Maybe they think we automatically know these things. I had been on synthroid for about five years when a co-worker clued me in. Good thing we have each other, eh?

wow i'm glad i found this post! i've been wondering about how thryoid disease would be affected by this diet. thanks so much to all the posters! it's reassuring to know that it could be because of my thyroid that i'm not losing as much as i think i should. although it makes me that much unhappier about my thyroid..

i thought i'd mention a medication i'm taking in addition to levoxyl (aka synthroid, etc) called cytomel. my doctor told me that this isn't a part of the usual regimen for hypothyroidism but that without it, studies have shown that a consistent increase in weight (about 8 lbs per year) can occur. maybe something to mention to your doctor?

with me, i started with hyperthyroidism and then b'c of the treatment, now i'm hypo. i gained about 20 lbs in the time between hyper and hypo, but have remained at a consistent (yet heavier) weight, probably due to the cytomel.

i don't want to go medicate people, this is just my experience. maybe it can help you all.

How were ya'll diagnosed?
I am really beginning to think (hope) that's my problem. I was tiny for years (100 lbs 5') but I smoked. Since I quit smoking 4 years ago, I have practically gained 10 lbs a year. I run/fast walk 2 miles everyday sometimes twice a day, have been eating lowcarb/good carb and keep gaining!! And it seems to be getting harder and harder to lose. I have read off the check lists and I have a ton of the symptoms. My blood levels show borderline. I took a saliva test for adrenal fatigue/failure and it showed low/borderline failure.
I am just so frustrated! I have started ps and have gained 3 lbs this week!!!!!!!!!

I was never particularly light - at 5'3" I always weighed around 140lbs. But a few years ago I realised that this had turned into at least 160. I tried all sorts of things and sometimes the weight came off but it always went on again. The thing that sent me to a doctor was my voice, which became unstable and fragile - I trained as a classical soprano and although I don't sing professionally much any more this is a personal disaster. I was also getting incredibly tired. Amongst other things he diagnosed a thyroid deficiency and when tests confirmed this I went on a thyroid supplement. I didn't lose weight though, until I found South Beach :) Sadly, my voice hasn't come back yet (though I have hopes), but I've lost 12lbs so far which I hope will stay off.
