For bruising you really need to take vitamin K.
You can also buy the vitamin K in cream form and apply to the bruises.
My vitamin book says that vitamin K is essential in the formation of prothombin, a blood clotting chemical, help in preventing internal bleeding and hemorrhages, aid in reducing excessive menstrual flow, promote proper blood clotting.
Natural sources: yogurt, alfalfa, egg yolk, safflower seeds, soybeans, fish, kelp, leafy green vegetables.
I would suggest to add those to your diet, rather than taking any extra C or K.
At the end of the page it says that yogurt is the best defense against a vitamin K deficiency.
If you have nosebleeding often, try increasing your K through natural sources.
If you're taking an anticoagulant (blood thinner), be aware that this vitamin (even in natural foods) can reverse the drug's effect.
Hope this helps, |

I had about a dozen 'light' bruises on my lower legs. Dr. didn't know what it was except a possible vitamin C deficiency. Took about a month of Vit C supplements to work, but they finally did disappear. Hope it helps!

Patty,
I was just looking through some other posts and see there is a lot of bruising going on. All in all, it looks like upping your intake of vitimin C will help..... and it is due to this diet. Still, I love this diet and would not stop it. |

Vitamin K can help stop bruising as it is part of the clotting cascade, but if you're eating the veggies prescribed by SBD, then that shouldn't be a problem at all. Vitamin K is found in dark green veggies (lettuces, spinach, fresh herbs, broccoli, etc.,etc. Like Ami said, if you're on anti-coagulants (warfarin/Coumadin), you need to be followed closely by your doctor when you go on this eating plan, as the veggies will mess up your daily dose of that particular medication.
However, our bodies are a little low on Vitamin C in the early stages of SBD because of the elimination of fruit. Many of us had a daily glass of OJ or oranges, grapefruit etc. I think the Vitamin C is the answer to this one. |

If you're eating enough vegetables, vitamin C shouldn't be a problem in p1 either-- broccoli, cauliflower, and tomatoes are all good sources.
Check out this search list for both K and C:

I have recently began bruising easily again. Had it in Ph1 and some in beginning Ph2 last year. Then it cleared up. Now, a year after starting SBD I am bruising easily again. I eat fruit and green veggies almost daily. I take Centrum and 400IU of Vit E along with 2 advils every day. What else could be causing this??
Hugs,
Cheryl~ |

Vitamin K is also made by bacteria in your intestine. this is our main source. That is why we give babies a shot of Vit K at birth, as their gut is pretty much bacterial free untol they start eating.
You really should not be deficint in this Vitamin.
I usually bruise very easily, but have actually noted less bruising in the last week Go figure :? |

| cherylal, I'm thinking that taking Advil daily could be involved. You might talk to your doctor about it. |

Hi Medicinewoman,
I have recently been diagnosed with IBS and have been constipated awhile. Do you think this is related to my easy bruising in any way? Also here is a copy of my most recent post regarding my IBS. Any comments?? Thanks. :)
"I have chronic constipation with pain. I just visited a Gastrointerologist for the first time and he has started a series of test on me. I asked him about colon cleansing and he said it was only a 'money maker'. I admit I am interested in it tho. There is someone here that is doing it now and says its great. I don't know this new doctor so I cant vouch for his opinion. I just hope he can fix me. I am miserable. I go two or more weeks without a bowel movement and am sooooooooooo bloated all the time. When I do have a bm it is like rabbit poo. I feel horrible . I am on an anti-depressant and have recently begun to wonder if maybe it is contributing to my IBS. I wonder.....??
Hugs,
Cheryl~" |

Hey Kim,
Nice to hear from you. You know, I haven't thought of that angle. You may be right. I take advil dailey on the advice of my Breast Specialist for my fibrocystic breasts. It keeps the tenderness at bay along with taking 1000 IU's of Vit E. Recently, on certain web sites, I have seen articles saying too much vit E is bad for a person. As well as taking regularly Advil contributes to cancer risks. This has added to my anxioty issues. Do you believe any of this or is it whooey? Thanks Sweetie.
Hugs,

Dear Cherylal:
Your Doctor is correct about colon cleansing
Our Colon has its own cleansing system, and besides who wants to have an enema stuck that far up?
Fibre and water are the keys to keeping this going.
I suppose with the IBS that you may have some trouble with the fibre
Usually a low residue diet is reccomended for those with sever IBS
Doesn't really fit with South beach does it?
You have to figure out your triggers
Also are you drinking lots of water?
Taking iron supplements? these can be very irritating to the bwoel
or any medications that contain narcotics?
What has your doctor suggested?
Hope this helps a bit, just a note, I am not a doctor and cannot treat or prescribe, just sharing info based on my knowledge. I am a maternity nurse, and dabble in natural medicine. Regards Carol |

Cherylal ... I posted to you in another area. Pretty much every product monograph for every anti-depressant states that usage can cause EITHER the runs OR constipation. I know, I've probably tried every single one as they all seem to react with me like I was 18 and dropping acid for the first time. I'm on doxepin now, which hasn't really affected me. I have SAD and Panic Disorder.
In regards to the bruising. Can it also be related to clotting disorders? My mother is on blood thinners and has been since before I was born as she almost died when my brother was an infant, and her mother had a stroke when my mother was 7. |

MANY OTC vitamins, supplements and treatments can cause easy bruising. I have been pretty much following this WOE for about a year (no weight issues, just wanted to eat healthier as a >55 recent widow cooking for self only).
I know asprin and ibuprofin drugs (advil, motrin) contribute to decreased clotting and increased bruising. I believe Vit E does also. I was taking an asprin and an E every day. Now I switch off and on the above advice will increase my C even though I do eat all the better veggies and fruits pretty regularly. |

Another easy bruiser here! I don't know what the problem is. I take a multi and extra E, C and calcium. I eat LOTS of yogurt (I make my own) and other vitamin K rich foods. Right now I have a very dark bruise on my forearm... I have no clue how I got it. I've had dark bruises on my belly and other odd places too. I always seem to have light to moderate bruising on the front of my shins.. I think from the exercise equipment I use during workouts. I thought I would try a fake tanner so the bruises wouldn't show up so much!
The bruising happened last year when I was on SBD too. I would be surprised if my platelet count is low... when I used to give platelets regularly, I would always give a double donation (equivalent to the platelets from 20-24 whole pints of blood) and sometimes a triple donation when the blood bank was really low. I always had a high platelet count... the blood bank loved me! |
