I thought I would look here for some help. I’m in phase two now but experiencing extreme tiredness. I mean it’s awful! I want to exercise and things but I just do not have the energy. I’m eating plenty of protein so I don’t think that’s a problem. Plus I’m eating tons of veggies so I can’t see that it’s a lack of vitamins or anything. Is anyone else experiencing this? I’d like to know how you “fixed” the problem. This really isn’t like me. Usually I have plenty of energy to do the things I want, but this is horrible! I would have expected it in phase one but not now??? Hope someone can give me some good advice. Thanks :)
PS: I also drink a great deal of water, so I don't think thats it either? |

Have you tried making a bean dish? Is it possible you're not getting something in you diet?

| Well actually I had beans today. I am eating such a variety of foods that it seems nearly impossible that I'm lacking something. I eat salads all the time and every week I have what I call expermental day with veggies that I normally wouldn't eat. I've been eating fruit regularly. It's just odd that I'm so tired. I have a thyroid problem but I take medication to correct it. Can this diet interfere with the medication? My doctor recommended the diet and he didn't mention anything like that. I'm just at a loss about it. |

Hello people!!! I thought I'd pipe up... I've just recently been thru the tiredness thing in Phase 2. Sure, I was getting in my protein, really good veggie intake, not a lot of beans, but they were in the diet, nobody can possibly drink more water than I do, my exercise routine was good... so, what was missing?
Carbs... I wasn't getting enough of my fruits and grains. I appear to be sensitive to the grains so I really had to tweak my intake there to figure out what worked for me. But... instant results.
Take a look at your meal plans and see just how much fruit and grains you've added back in. Perhaps not enough? |

| Also, look at your rate of weight loss. If you are losing more than 1 pound a week in phase II, you may not be getting enough total calories. |

| Well I'm hardly losing any weight so its not that I'm losing too fast LOL I wish that were a problem. I know that I didn't add back in a lot of carbs but I was trying to be careful in the beginning. So most days I would have only one or two servings of carbs. I'm back on phase one now so that part is not important. I did start taking a multivitamin this week and that seems to be helping a lot! Hopefully it will do the trick once I go back to phase two. |

Jakesmom and everyone,
I dieted and exercised all summer, walking between 4 and 8 miles a day and doing everything I normally did to drop the winter's gain. Nothing worked. I was falling asleep after supper and experiencing such fatigue. Lost interest in exercise because it was getting just to stressful plus I was gaining!!!!! weight.
I insisted on a TSH blood test in August. It came back showing that my thyroid was not working causing my spike in cholesterol, fatigue, weight gain because my metabolism had slowed down. I was lucky that my blood test confirmed what I was experiencing.
I understand that if you have "normal" TSH results, and are still experiencing the symptoms you described, I would urge you to get the test done by an endocrinologist, a specialist will be able to pinpoint if it is hypothyroidism, or low thyroid.
I've been on medication just a little over one week, and I can tell you that I've been amazed....I was able to enjoy a movie with my husband Saturday evening and stay AWAKE! I am able to enjoy watching the 10 p.m. news now. The PUFFYNESS is going away in my face. My muscle aches have all but disappeared! AND ALL THIS AFTER ONLY ONE WEEK ON THYROID MEDS!
OH, and I've lost 8 pounds on Phase I (Week 1) and I'm feeling much better all over. I love to walk and have resumed my 4 miles a day.
Please think about the TSH test. Ask your doctor first and see a specialist if you are not satisfied. This is not a problem only older women experience, I found out that thyroid problems hit all ages, runs in families, (both my sisters have been on thyroid medication for a couple years) and I have a niece who despite following diet and exercise has been unable to get her weight to budge.
Best of luck. |

Hi Libmo,
Having been diagnosed with hypothyroidism about ten years ago…and taking Synthroid ever since I can definitely relate. It was really the first thing I suspected. I had blood work done on my last visit, which was in July just before I originally began South Beach. My doctor recommended this diet so I ordered the books and got started. My blood work came back okay so I guess it’s not my thyroid…this time anyway.
It is that same sort of tired feeling though. Like you described. I just don’t seem to have enough energy to do the things I enjoyed. Before the diet I was walking regularly and really enjoying myself. Now I feel like walking to the bathroom is a chore! I would love to see an endocrinologist but that means I need a referral. With normal blood tests that won’t be easy. I started phase one this week to see if I get any results and if I don’t I am definitely going to go back to the doctor and beg him to let me see a specialist. Where I have polycystic ovarian syndrome many of my hormones are out of whack and really I need special tests in order to see just how off they really are. I heard that in order for your thyroid to be noticed as being ineffective it has to be 85% inefficient! So maybe I simply need better more accurate tests. In my case my adrenal glands over produce, which causes me to produce excess steroids, and my pituitary gland, is over productive. My endocrine system is just a mess…but I need a doctor to listen and that is the hardest part! In order for my original diagnosis of PCOS I fought to see a specialist for six years! Hopefully my new doctor will listen!
Thank you for taking the time to write. I’m glad to hear that you are feeling much better!

Hi Stephanie,
There is something other than the SB going on. You are on the right track. It sounds more and more hormonal.
My thyroid is only about 60% effective, but it showed up on the TSH. Normal is supposed to be somewhere between 3 and 5. Mine was 11. I don't know how they read these things but that 11 was out of whack. You would think that would be hyper not hypo thyroidism.
You are a trooper to have stayed with SB. I hope you will keep after your doctor. Hopefully your doctor won't think you are being difficult or crazy. Might be time for a second opinion.
I had to find a younger doctor who agreed to work with me as a partner in my health. My doctor of 10 years wasn't interested in helping me...kept prescribing pills. I agreed to follow my new doctor's advice if he would not threat me as a child and pay attention to my concerns. (Weight gain and vague muscle aches.)
So far so good. He listened and together we came up with a plan to attack the thyroid first, cholesterol second, and my part is to get the weight under control.
I hope you will find out what is going on. Once you get the hormones under control life will be much better. :) |

| You are so right! I'm giving myself this next two weeks back on phase one to see how it goes. If I don't get any results at all then I am making an appointment. My boyfriend even said he would go with me and back me up. Unfortunately its been my experience that doctors want to blame everything on the fact that you are fat. Even when there is other evidence staring them in the face! It is unreal! I had a girlfriend who went in with a really bad wrist and he blammed her weight. You can't get her to go to a doctor at all anymore! I don't blame her sometimes it can be degrading and insulting....I'm prepared to fight with mine! |

That's the spirit!
I just noticed that "Jake" is your dog! He's a cutie. We have an aging cat named Missy. We had to put her on a diet a couple years ago. She was not happy. But now that she is able to jump on counters and beds again, I think she has forgiven us. She lost 2 whole pounds! and that was 20% of her previous body weight. So we're very proud of her.
Hang in there and keep looking for answers. |

| Wow we have something else in common...not only are we dieting but so are out pets LOL. I have Jake on a very strict diet. He was up to 51 pounds thanks to visiting my parents who insisted on feeding him everything. He should be about 35 so thats really overweight for a doggie. He's now down to 45.5 pounds...I'm so proud of him! He is my baby! With the PCOS I can't have children...so he is very much a baby to me! |

I am Hypo.have been for about 6 years,my blood tests are usually around 2,it just seems odd that 2 months into SB(I started in March) I am getting sleepy,I don't feel fatigued, just sleepy..
I usually have 3 fruit a day,I have beans as a side dish daily, steel cut oats for breakfast.Salads with lunch and vegs.with meal at night.
Not losing either,an odd ounce now and then.I don't have bread,as once I start on it I carn't stop,so there is no bread in the house.
Just feel like I need a hit of something.to jump me out of this.
Oh yes I heard that the normal TSH range has been changed in USA,1.5 to 3. I may be wrong but I think I read something about it on that About Com.Thyroid page.I will check it out.
Sandra.
Talking about pets,I have 5 schnauzers. |

5 furry babies! You are truly blessed :D .
Well I have to say that I have been sleepy as well. Thats how I feel a lot of the time. Even though I sleep at night I feel as if I can fall asleep anytime during the day. Do you think the diet can change your thyroid? That maybe we need a different doseage of medication now that we are on a diet? I have not had mine tested since I began the diet maybe I should?
At first I thought maybe my blood sugar was dropping but I have been measuring it and it seems fine. Great in fact! Maybe it is just a phase? Then again most people are telling me that they feel better than they have in years! My weight loss has been real slow too. I began phase one again on the 14th. If I'm not happy with the results I will definately see my doctor. Keep me informed if you learn anything new. I'm in Canada so the way they measure is different. In fact I have no idea what my numbers are. I never see the test results. I get them done and they are sent to my doctor. If there is any problems or changes they get back to me.
