For years I had severe pain in my shoulder (restricted supraspinatus), and when I lost 50+ lbs doing the AHA low-fat/high carb diet, the pain and restriction were gone. Needless to say, I put most of the weight back on once I slacked off. And the pain/restriction returned. I've been on P1 for a week now (NO CRAVINGS at all during this time, if you can believe it), and the pain and restriction are lessening.
Now, I've had a pretty intensive A&P course, so I do know a bit about the physiology stuff, but never saw any connection before. Now that I'm experiencing it again, I'm really stumped about the whole thing. Not that I'm complaining that the pain is going away, of course  My incredibly curious nature HAS to know WHY it's going away (yes, I was one of those children who drove her mommy crazy asking "why?"!)
Has anybody else had any similar experiences, or perhaps has the technical explanation? I'd really appreciate feedback..... |

I had the same thing happen to me with wheat, had severe leg cramps for years, couldn't exercise. As soon as I went on SBD, the cramps disappeared. First time I had a little wheat, they came back. Needless to say, I've been wheat free since Jan. 04

That's pretty interesting, Burdle.......I'd say maybe it was wheat, but since the previous diet was bad carb rich and low in fat and sugar, I'm certain wheat wasn't the problem. I know sugar can cause yeast infections, headaches, hyperactivity.....but this one really has me stumped. I know I should be content just knowing that the pain is subsiding once again. But........I just can't stand NOT knowing WHY the pain is subsiding! :?
Hopefully somebody will come along and satisfy my quest for the answer!
BTW, just finished week 1 on P1 and lost 5.5 lbs! I'm a happy camper (without s'mores!!!) |

You had joint pain, mine was muscle related, foods can do weird things to us, don't know if you will ever find out why, could be an allergy to sugar cane...who knows?

Ya know, it could very well be muscle related. I know it's the supraspinatus (part of rotator cuff muscles) that's involved in giving me fits, but I always attributed it to the shoulder itself being stiff. My chiropractor adjusts my shoulder, but also pokes the heck out of the supraspinatus too.
Never thought of a food-related allergy/sensitivity in relationship to muscles or joints, though. Guess anything's possible...... |

| I wonder if there's something that is in both diets that helps it, like a certain vitamin present in veggies that you ate in both plans. |

| that's a possibility, I suppose........but honestly, I'm not real big on veggies, so the last time around I wasn't eating nearly the variety I'm eating now. The only real link is the sugar, as far as I've been able to tell. Thanks for giving me something else to ponder, Kim.......I'm open to any possibilities!! |

In my 22 years of experience with food allergies, I've known lots of people with fibromyalgia, and they are told to go on a diet similar to a Candida (yeast infection) diet which is sugar free, so it is possible that sugar can cause your muscle problems...does your chiropractor do muscle testing? Perhaps he could test you for sugar. I test bad on both sugar and salt...a little too common to make my life easy!
Good Luck, continue to feel better,

I've had arthritis in both knees since I was 17. I was prone to flare-ups about twice a month, but since SBD (4 mo.) not one. I can't attribute it to carrying less weight as the relief was almost immediate. Obviously, the arthritis hasn't left me but the pain is almost irrelevant now...at least in comparison to the previous 30 + years.
I've always eaten fairly well...vegetables,low sodium, lean meat etc..just too much. The difference , for me , is in the subtraction of sugar and white flour.Probably more the flour ,as I'm not a huge sweet fan. I do believe there's a connection, but am at a loss to explain it scientifically, except to say that the trash I was putting in my system must have contributed to the inflamation.
Peacefulpath, I'm with you...I'm loving it, but would like to know why and if anyone else has had this wonderful side affect. :) Grace |

Burdle: not sure whether chiro does any kind of testing other than muscle. I have an appt next week, so I had planned on asking him about the correlation between sugar, muscles/joints, etc. I know about sugar in relation to yeast infections - quite the powerful incentive alone to keep sugar intake down!
IMGrace: Glad to hear your pain has diminished. I know what you mean about the instant (almost) relief so it can't be the weight causing the pain. I have hip problems (one reason for chiro visits) which are not weight related, and now that you mention your issues, I've also noticed that my hip has not been nearly so painful in the last 4-5 days. Hmm.....something ELSE to talked to the doc about. This just gets curiouser and curiouser!!! |

| I know what you mean. I had been unofficially diagnosed with fibromyalgia (drs don't make official diagnosis until they bleed you dry with tests) and was takin xanax at night to help me sleep (which did help some). I would have shooting pains all over my body, mostly arms and legs and I could not stand to be touched as my muscles hurt when someone did so. Since being on the SBD I have not had to take the xanax and feel soo much better. The muscle pain is gone and I am not as sensitive to touching as before. Plus I have so much more energy. I was literally dragging myself out of bed in the morning and hurt all over. I too think it has something to do with the sugar but don't know what the connection is. I am just happy it works. :D Keep up the good work and I'll see you on the beach. |

Well, I ask the chiropractor about the correlation between sugar and muscle and/or joint pain. He smiled and said absolutely, and proceeded to tell me that he had patients on both Atkins and SB who remarked about pain diminishing while on either diet. I told him I had started SB and what I was experiencing, and he said that for some people, sugar just seems to act like a poison.
Now I'm wondering if those of us who have experienced this reduction in pain from being on SB, if maybe, just maybe, that might be a form of pre-diabetic symptom, too. Now THERE's a question for Dr. A! |
