I was flirting with the idea of going back to phase 1, but I'm not going to. I'm sticking to the plan as it is laid out, why the hell else is there an entire community of SBD people... I mine as well comply.

I also realized I need to keep my goals under 10 lbs at a time "SLOW AND STEADY". 358 Looking for 350. Cheers.

Question...

Is it necessary to do it slowly with only one fruit or one grain per day the first week. Or can you just start out with one fruit AND one grain per day and then gradually move up from there. ??

advice on transitioning (read the entire first post - it will answer your question)

I actually did already read that. I was just wondering from experience if anyone slowly added or just added everything at once.

Well as that explains quite well (better than I can) in order to recognize how you do w/ certain foods, adding slowly is your best bet. Plus some foods (even though allowed) are just not right for some people.

Yes people have added more things in at once - before this advice was given - and they weren't able to recognize things that caused cravings, etc.

thanks! I'm doing this with my sister in law and she keeps telling me that we can have fruit for breakfast, bread for lunch and then some pasta for dinner. I told her we should take it slow and she said "in the book you can do it like that". If that is how she wants to do it that's fine. I will take it slow so I can see how my body reacts to different things.

Do you think it would be ok to have a fruit one day and then a grain the next?

CW, I am planning to alternate. First day, a piece of whole-grain toast w/ breakfast. Next day, a piece of fruit. Keeping it to only one carb each day for at least the first week. Since I am a daily weigher  , I will definitely notice if my weight starts creeping up.

Ok that's cool. I am glad we can switch it up each day. I am looking forward to Phase II.

The idea behind eating the same exact food for a week (I say 4-7 days) is to be able to recognize the signs - are you hungry, are you craving? I don't think 1 day w/ 1 food adn the next w/ another will help you out very much w/ this.

Notice this (from the advice on transitioning - this is directly from Dr. A though)

Choose one carbohydrate--like a piece of fruit or a slice of whole-grain bread--and add it to one daily meal for one week. If after one week you're still losing weight and are free of cravings, then you can move on and begin adding more carbs. If your progress stalls, try a new carb until you find one that works.

We truly cannot figure out how a food affects us in 1 day.

Edited: This is also very good (from teh first page of this post) explains it well I think: from Dr. A--

Instead of immediately adding a variety of carbohydrates to your weekly menu, choose a single carbohydrate—like a piece of fruit or a slice of whole-grain bread—and add it to one daily meal for one week. Pay close attention to how your body responds over the next few days. Do you find yourself craving other carbohydrates or sweets? Has your weight loss stalled?

If the answer to either of these questions is yes, try a different type of carbohydrate and see if anything changes. When you find a carbohydrate that doesn't produce cravings, add a second choice and again monitor your reaction. Continue this process until you're able to eat two to three servings of good carbohydrates a day. If you remember to take it slowly, you should be able to achieve this goal without reintroducing cravings or reversing weight loss.

Keep in mind that weight loss slows during Phase 2. This gradual weight loss is not only expected, it is healthy. If you continue to lose weight at a rapid rate in Phase 2, you may be losing lean muscle mass, which can ultimately lower your metabolism. (Weight-bearing exercise is another good way to protect against this.) Plus, weight lost gradually is more likely to stay off over the long term.

OK, thanks for the info nygirl... I am not missing bread at all, so I think I will add a piece of fruit to one meal each day next week and see how it goes.

So, today was supposed to be the beginning of my Phase 2 but I think I am going to drag it out a few more days, maybe until Monday? I'm scared. I lost 10-11 lbs on Phase 1 (YAY!) but I am afraid of "blowing it." Nothing to do but just try, I guess. I'm doing this with my husband and teenage daughter. It makes a big difference when the whole family is in on it together. I did SBD several years ago and it was a total failure because I was the only one doing it.

Anyway, tomorrow we are doing a big purge of the pantry and then I am going to go out and maybe find some... fruit? Cherries look awfully good these days.

Hey guys ive been doing P2 for five days now and as i read it you can have one peice of fruit and one starch in the first two weeks....varying it around a bit....but it does recommend that you eat the fruit in the afternoon maybe as a snack....

I am a littl worried about being on phase two i have to say, as things were going well and like you skeeto i am afraid of all my hard working going to pot....but then i look at all those before and after photo's and think sheese...it really works!! Plus the P1 isn't really about loosing weight its about getting rid of your cravings...so i guess you could see it as your diet starting all over again in P2 but with the added bonus of having lost all that water weight and knowing what ou can and can't eat fairly well :D

I have to say i am scared to go on the scales....i din't weigh myself at all on P2 until i was round a a friends house and he cooked me a wonderful SBD friendly dinner and i noticed some scales in the bathroom....dun dun deeerrrr!! and i thought,,,well, its midnight, and you ahve all your clothes on AND you've just eaten, but what the hey right? ! So i hopped on and was so chuffed to see all the water weight had shifted and it just gave me that little boost....

This week i am due to start my period so i'm not going to weigh myself until after then  My friends mum did the diet...and let me tell you she looks absolutley phenominal...living proof... and she didn't weigh herself once she was on P2 until about two weeks into it (i guess after all the flutuations) and she woke up one morning and thought...wow! i feel really thin!! She said it was just as if it had all fallen off in the night and she hopped on the scales and it was working a treat!

So dont be afraid girlies, we can do this! Just think of the motivation and i'm just going to give it time to work and see what happens!! Hopefully in two weeks i'll be waking up thinking the same thing! hee hee

Don't be afraid -- early phase 2 is so similar to phase 1 - you're only adding ONE thing for the first week. Just take everyone's word for it - b/c now that I've been sticking around here (this forum) for a while, I see over and over again how true it is that eating more healthy carbs REALLY does help the weight loss - and it makes eating more enjoyable!

Good luck.
