Ditto on this thread being awesome! I'm supposed to start P2 today but was scared and had planned on staying in P1 for one more week. But not now, thanks to this thread.

You asked the million dollar question! While I'm nervous to move to P2, I'm looking forward to more variety in food choices. Also, I think it will be easier to take along a small apple to snack on while I'm out running errands should I get hungry. Its funny, though I used to LOVE bread and pasta, I probably won't be adding it in the first week or so. What I'm really wanting is the fruit and I was never a big fruit eater to begin with! And Sunday is my birthday, so I WILL be adding that glass of red wine to celebrate both my birthday and my success so far. But that will be it for the week for me. One apple and one glass of wine.
Keep up the good work everyone!!

I read over this thread, and I now know why I don't want to start the SB with Phase I. I have been there so many times, of losing weight, then getting off of the strict phase, then gain it all back.
So, my philosophy, is to begin South Beach with Phase II, and take is slow and easy. No need to lose that quick weight (mostly being water) right off of the bat, from doing Phase I, and then turn around and so many people gain it back.
Wish me luck by starting Phase II first! :D |

i disagree with you......i have been on the atkins diet on and off for a long time and lost exactly a 100 pounds(297 lbs to 197 lbs)...........by the way, im 6 feet 2 inches tall.............anyway,i had heard about people saying that most of the weight is water weight and you will gain all of it back once you get off the diet but the truth is that i started eating EVERY and ANYTHING i wanted to eat(AND I MEAN MEDIUM PIZZAS ALL FOR MYSELF AT LIKE 10 PM IN THE NIGHT)......even then it took MONTHS to gain 20 pounds back and i didnt gain anymore weight even tho i was still eating fatty, high carb, unhealthy foods...........
i think with SB, by "gradually" adding good carbs into your diet, you wont gain the weight.....i was 220 pounds and decided the atkins diet was literally making e SICK.....i felt like i was about to throw up everytime i walked from place to place....so i have switched to south beach........i have lost 13 pounds in the two weeks since i started phase 1 and my phase two begins tomorrow.........i am going to be VERY picky when i go to the grocery store making sure i look for low sugar foods and checking the ingredients to see if theres any of those "fructose","corn syrups" and all that stuff that ive read about on this site.......... |

Yes I am very afraid to start Phase 2. I tried last week when it was time: Day 1 added a carrot cut into sticks and a SBD oatmeal/ww cookie for dessert.
Day 2 I was still not feeling very good with a sore throat and bad cough, I did not eat breakfast or morning snack. I had to force my self to eat the rest of the day. I only added carrots today.
Day 3 I was starving so I decided to go back to phase one. Have done really well during the rest of the week but still feels like too much food. I still have my cough, and feel weak, I slept all day. I have decided to return to Phase 2 in the AM, maybe that will help me feel better. I see the doctor on Thursday for an oficial weigh in and counciling, I hope I have been doing things the right wayand get an ok.
My total weight loss has been 6.8 pounds. I have not yet started to really exercise because for the past two weeks I have had a viral infection and not felt very good. |

thnak you for whom ever bumped this thread again I wouldn't have noticed it other wise....
Today I was supposed to start P2 but am sticking with P1 for a few weeks more due to the fact that I know what I'm eating and it's comfortable and I'm going away at the end of July for a week and it's easier for me know that I can't have bread, pasta, fruit and sugar- so that's going to make my trip that much easier, it's not to lose anymore weight quickly, it's just convenience for me - I do have 1 question though:
When we start P2, can start it slowly by adding just one fruit a day, or 1 fruit a week... I have read the previous posts and I'm getting the vibe that to start slowly, that's the way to do... maybe one day for brekkie, have some cereal instead of an egg and the rest of the week just eat P1 foods.... am I right or have I misunderstood...
Thanks!

Is it really ok to stay on phase 1 that long? are you still losing the weight, with the same results as the first two weeks? |

workinmom wrote: I, too am starting P2 on Mon & a little nervous. I am feeling pretty comfortable with P1 & my scale is down 6 lbs after 8 days!!! My questions is how do you know if you are having cravings after adding back certain carbs? I am not really tempted to eat the chips & stuff now, but I think that's b/c I'm still motivated. When I get the urge to eat the bad stuff, how do I know if it's a "carb induced craving", or just a slip in my motivation.
Raygunclan - I agree, the book isn't very clear on how much or what to eat. This website is much more helpful. I didn't know that you had to have 1/2 c. veggies at breakfast & at least 2 cups at lunch & dinner until I read it on this website. The book just states salad w/dressing. That has been a great help. Having trouble getting 1/2 c. in the morning. Trying to add veggies to my eggs. Haven't developed a taste for tomato/V8 juice yet. Where did you find out the info one "half a cup of veggies in the morning" does v8 count for the half cup? |

Yes, harmonylee - the v8 counts as the 1/2 cup of veggies for breakfast.
Whenever you start adding fruit for breakfast, you can have fruit instead of veggies. That is not explicitly stated anywhere, but the menus in the book make it completely clear that if you have fruit at breakfast you don't also need to have veggies. Although there is nothing wrong with having both!
