Ketosis is often more of an Atkins term than an SBD term. SBD prefers that you actually stay out of ketosis, but especially in Phase 1, you may not be eating enough carbs to prevent it.
Basically, if you lower your carb intake sufficiently, your body has to get the energy somewhere. When it turns to your fat stores, pr even your dietary fats, a byproduct of burning that fat produces chemicals known as ketones in your system. Elevated levels of ketones are known as being in ketosis and one very common and noticeable side effect is bad breath.
Some view being in ketosis as a good thing, others view it as less than desireable. Here is a link from the Atkins Nutritionals page that gives their view:

Do a web search on ketosis and there are a lot of sites out there that discuss it, almost all of them being low carb dieting types of sites and view it as a good thing. More traditional nutritional and dietary sites tend to view it as a bad thing with concerns for liver damage and not providing enough carbs for normal brain activity. To quote Fox Mulder, "The Truth is Out There", I'm just not sure what it is! |
