I've been on South Beach long enough to lose 30 pounds and I'm pretty pleased with it. I used to have chronic constipation, but the additional water intake and the addition of a daily fiber pill has taken care of that. (BTW - I, too, have encountered the laxative effects of the Sugarless candies).
My question is about fibrous waste products. I have noticed strings of about 1 to 1 and 1/2 inches in length coming out of my stools. They are brown and appear to be solid. I am eating more salad and raw almonds. Could this be fiber? Why is it not imbedded in the stool?
Any insight would be appreciated. Thanks! |

Oh, I just love disgusting body waste questions!
It could be the effects of the fiber pill. It can scrape old mucous from the inside of your colon, or it could be dairy products, they don't always combine with the rest of the waste. It could also be something you are eating, like shredded cabbage, that isn't getting chewed well enough. If you are really concerned, call you doctor who can do a stool test to be sure you don't have parasites or a yeast infection, which can also cause weird appearing things in the stool. Changes in diet can cause the body to dispose of parasites, and SBD is very close to a Candida (yeast infection) diet, which could cause the body to dispose of dead yeast colonies.
Oh, goodness, I wish I didn't have to know so much about this subject...

I believe those 1-1/2 " stringy things are intestinal parasites. Have you been out of the country lately or have eaten alot of Shrilankan pistacio nuts?
If they are worms, try this home remedy a friend from Africa told me about.
When you go to bed, tuck an unchewed stick of Spearment gum between your cheek and gums. In the morning, see what you have. They just love spearment.
Good luck. |

| :( Burdle, a Candida diet? What the heck is that? (By the way, I love disgusting topics like this, too. I just posted a question about gas on the main page.) I wonder if that has anything to do with the excessive gas I've been having. I have stools like that sometimes too. And they're real stinkers. |

Why do we associate anything that comes out of the rectum to be disgusting? It's normal bodily functions and we shouldn't be embarrassed or shy to discuss them.
My BMs have been very green since being on a modified version of the diet, and stinks as well. I'm assuming it's the veggies though.
I'd see a doctor just in case it's a parasite. I was in South America for a year and pick up some 'amigos' as they called them over there. It took about 4 months to get rid of them! |

Hi, Paula. Candida is a yeast infection. Women usually get one vaginally, but it can be systemic (throughout the whole body). People with allergies frequently get yeast infections. Men can get one, too, and it can be passed back and forth sexually. It can sometimes appear as a skin rash. It isn't life threatening, but it can have different effects on different people. Some women and men get a case of 'the drip', smelly discharge. It can also effect brain and muscle function. A Candida diet is a very low carb diet, more like Atkins than SBD, with no vinegar, sugar, refined white flour, sometimes no grains at all, no mushrooms. All these foods 'feed' the yeast infection and make it worse. There are many treatments including prescription meds like Diflucan. I took homeopathic remedies for Candida for years. Also herbal treatments like pau d'arco tea, tea tree oil, oil of oregano. Also, acidophilus can helps. Some women even douche with yogurt which contains the acidophilus culture. Candida is almost impossible to get rid of, but can be controlled. It can be caused by antibiotics which kill off the bad germs, but some of the good ones, too. The yeast feeds on antibiotics, which is why it is now recommended to eat yogurt after taking a round of antibiotics, helps put back the good germs in the digestive system.
Hope that helps,

I am takin gup this old postings, cause I have one question:
If I try to take a spearmintgum between the cheek and the gums at night - what might I see in the morning...?
I am afraid to try this if I don't know what I might discover.... |

| I'm very curious myself about the spearmint gum thing. What would happen if there were parasites in one's system and they did this? (I'm afraid to ask but dying to know.) |

| It sounds like the worms will travel "upstream" to get to the spearmint. GROSS!!!!!! |

| I know it said "cheek and gums" but for some reason I was thinking the other "cheeks" and you supply the gum and then it would all be "downstream". Kinda gross either way! I didn't take that part of it very seriously though. Kinda funny to see it crop back up to the top again. The thread titles that attract people!! |

Yes, I was so curious I had to ask! Think of waking up in the morning with lots of worms in the mouth! It is better to go for the downstream option I think! ;)
Reason why I took this thread up again; I have not noticed any 'strings' coming from my stool, but I have an akward stomach I think, and had for a couple of years, with lots of air and in periods frequent gas. It might be my very bad eating habits, which now (hopefully) are about to change, but I also have been little concerned of parasites after a trip to Russia two years ago. The tapwater contains them, and they will stay in the body for several years.
But then I started on SBD and it got a lot worse. But I am counting on the fiber/veggies/sugarfree candy now, and my bad eating rythm and habits prior to the SBD.
Yesterday it was really bad, but I ate lots of brussel spruits for dinner and too many isomalt candies afterwards. Maybe that was the problem.
Today I bought some tablets with seaweed which supposed to be good for digestion or something. Maybe that helps? Haven't any problems so far today anyway! :)
Maybe I should try the gum-thing just for fun! |

Did you ever try the parasite remedy?!
Has anybody tried similar otc products (I've heard of something called Paranil that is also supposed to cleanse the system of parasites/eggs/etc.)
In a similar vein, I too would be nervous about trying the 'spearmint in mouth' test...! |
