I tried my experiment last night

As a good scientist i know often times much more is learned by an experiment that failed than one that is sucessful, but darn it i was hoping this would work for me. Last night i said I was going to try to exercise after dinner and then have a small carb/prot snack before bed to see how my BG was this morning. Well i exercised before dinner and right before bed had a small snack and this morning my BG was 167. Yesterday morning it was 152 ...so i dont think this worked for me...bummer. I was not able to do any exercise after dinner due to we had company but at least i got my 30 minutes in before they came over for dinner. So i think i will go back to not having anything remotely carb after 4pm and lets see what tomorrows BG says. I will try to exercise after dinner tonight but no snack before bed.
I am not upset by this but I am bummed. So back to the drawing board to get my BG down below 100 by Oct. I will keep you all posted.
be well
have a great day

Karen (Dariad254),

I'm so sorry that your experiment did not work for you. Pretty much the same thing happened for me (mildly type II diabetic) The first time I tried this (exercise after dinner and a snack at bedtime) my fasting (morning) plasma blood glucose level (96 mg/dL) was lower than any measurement that I had taken beginning Monday, August 9. So, I was excited about that.

However, subsequent to the first night, I have exercised after dinner and had a bedtime snack of Yoplait Ultra low fat & low sugar yogurt every night, and my fasting BG level has not improved.

So, I am with you on this ... disappointed :x . But "nothing ventured nothing gained" ... right? Other people have reported that they had better results than we have. Perhaps the person who shared this experience with me did not understand that the Dawn Phenomenon occurs primarily in type I diabetics (and sometimes insulin-dependent diabetics). So, I guess that type II non-insulin dependent diabetics can basically forget about exercise after dinner and a snack at bedtime reducing their fasting BG levels.

At least one positive side effect of this for me is that I finally got myself out the door walking for a couple of miles. I have decided also to continue having my bedtime snack. As it is so long until the morning BG level measurement, I doubt that it could have a negative effect on the measurement. For example, this morning my blood glucose level was 109 mg/dL.

Definition of Dawn Phenomenon

A sudden rise in blood glucose levels in the early morning hours. This condition sometimes occurs in people with insulin-dependent diabetes and (rarely) in people with noninsulin-dependent diabetes. Unlike the Somogyi effect, it is not a result of an insulin reaction. People who have high levels of blood glucose in the mornings before eating may need to monitor their blood glucose during the night. If blood glucose levels are rising, adjustments in evening snacks or insulin dosages may be recommended.

BTW: here are links to some information on the Dawn Phenomenon and the website's recommendation for how to prevent or lessen the effect of the Dawn Phenomenon, which includes eating a *small* balanced snack before bedtime. They also talk about something called a "liver dump" and morning insulin resistance ... for which they recommend eating less carbohydrates early in the day. Oh, and by the way, the Dawn Phenomenon seems to be much more common in and relevant to type I (insulin-dependent) diabetics.

Definition of Somogyi Effect

A swing to a high level of glucose (sugar) in the blood from an extremely low level, usually occurring after an untreated insulin reaction during the night. The swing is caused by the release of stress hormones to counter low glucose levels. People who experience high levels of blood glucose in the morning may need to test their blood glucose levels in the middle of the night. If blood glucose levels are falling or low, adjustments in evening snacks or insulin doses may be recommended. This condition is named after Dr. Michael Somogyi, the man who first wrote about it. Also called "rebound."

Definition of Rebound

A swing to a high level of glucose (sugar) in the blood after having a low level.

Best of luck with getting your fasting blood glucose level down below 100 by October 1st. I saw my internist yesterday. She was quite pleased with my morning fasting BG Levels: 117, 108, 117, 108, 108, 96, 100, 107, 109 mg/dL. I am happy about this, too. I take Avandia after measuring my fasting BG level. Avandia makes our cells less insulin-dependent, which helps lower our BG levels. I am fortunate so far, as I am only mildy diabetic. I hope that the SBD and losing a whole lot of weight will reduce my BG levels to the normal range. My internist assured me that this will happen ... when I lose about 40 pounds. 8)

Take good care of yourself, everyone, especially those of us with diabetes. The complications are many, some very serious, some fatal. In fact, I read that a diabetic has the same risk of having a heart attack as someone who has already had a heart attack. I believe and hope that controlling blood glucose levels will reduce the risk of complications. 8)

Like i said im bummed but hey i did learn something, and as a good scientist i know that often more is learned from an experiment that failed that one that succeeded. So i might have struck out at bat but I am certainly not out of the game.
I will be very interested in seeing what exercising does for my BG without any snack before bed. I have been walking about 30 min at lunchtime but adding another 30 or 60 min of walking or a tape certainly cant hurt and most likely it will only help.
Your BG levels are GREAT!!! Be very proud of yourself. I am planning to get there myself soon.
Thanks for all the good info and the website when i get some free time this afternoon i will do some more reading.
Talk with you all soon
be well
