Well you were probably like me. When "watching" what I ate I would have red. fat crackers, ff yogurt, light salad dressing, that "dieters" plain potato - all those processed foods and added sugars that are supposedly ok for dieting. It's no wonder people with PCOS and IR can't lose weight this way. We are already more suceptible to gaining weight due to are sugar absorbtion issues, and here we are eating away on extra sugar and not even knowing it!
I'm just very in the beginning - only a couple weeks into p2. But I've already lost 7.2 pounds. I know when I add my metformin back in I'll lose more. And the more I exercise and longer I stick with the sbd the closer I'll be to my goal of 60 pounds gone and a healthier me. There's no doubt in my mind that sbd will help those with PCOS b/c all the foods here are the ones my doctors have been recommending for years for me to eat.
Meesiejean - good luck with the weight loss! I'm very happy that you had success TTC. :D |

Hey everyone! I'm new around here. I was diagnose with PCOS 11 years ago when I was 17.
I had tried atkins a few years ago and while it worked, I felt it wasn't practical. I gained some of the weight back when we moved from Virginia back to Michigan.
Last week, I went in to speak to my gyno and she put me back on metformin. After being off of it for years (lapses in insurance) She also suggested I try the South Beach Diet. She said that they are finding that it is the best way of eating with PCOS. I started the diet on mothers day and have already dropped 7 pounds in just 2 1/2 days. I'm never hungry and have even convinced my husband to join me!
I look forward to being part of this community! |

| I'm dealing with PCOS and hypothyroid. Gyno switched me from Ortho to YAZ recently, I gained 10 pounds in 2 months. New gyno put me back on ortho and told me to try SBD. I was very skeptical because as many of you know...weightloss is difficult if not impossible at times. So far, less than 3 weeks and 13 pounds down I feel like I could cry tears of joy! I am taking 250 mcg of synthroid but no metformin. I am not sure why it has not been mentioned. I am supposedly going to the best endo in the state but I am starting to have doubts. Her suggestions was a liquid diet for 5 months, she NEVER mentioned SBD. I have not been perfect but even with my screw ups on this diet and I am doing okay. I screw up and start again with my next bite. Is metformin not for me if I am not trying to conceive at this time? |

| Hi there. I am a new beacher. I was diagnosed with PCOS 10 years ago and am in the process of attempting to get pregnant. My husband and I went to a reproductive endocrinologist who put me back on metformin and synthroid and recommended SBD. it has been 1 week since I started and I have lost 10LBS! This has renewed my hopes in possibly getting pregnant! My doctor said when I go back for my check up in about 2 months we may be able to begin the actual "process" of getting pregnant with the use of chlomid and that my chances are going to be significantly better with the weight loss I should have on the diet. I am so glad we started this! (my hubby started with me) I am also so glad I found this thread. It is great to know that there are several others like me out there that know what I am going through. I just wanted to say hello! |

| Hello ladies! I was recently diagnosed with PCOS. One of the primary recommendations of my GP was to finally get my weight under control, hence why I am here. It so nice to see that there are so many of us on here. This is wonderful. |

Hello everyone. I'm new to this board. My name is Ashley and I was diagnosed with PCOS in 2002 at age 18. (On top of it all I also have narcolepsy) But since then I have gained approximately 100 pounds so clearly my weight is still completely out of control. I have been on Yasmin since then and that has controlled my cycle, hirsutism, and acne. But no one ever suggested that I be put on Metformin (and I recall asking my doctors about it at the time), as many of you guys are and I'm wondering at this point if it may be something that I need. My cholesterol and blood pressure, despite my morbid obesity, have always been good.
I was a vegan for 5 years throughout high school and some of college (but was never skinny as most vegans are) so I decided to go back to veganism to see how that would affect my weight and I did manage to lose 23 pounds via Dr. Joel Fuhrman's book Eat to Live. But then I realized I probably shouldn't be increasing my soy intake because I don't need it screwing with my hormone levels so veganism isn't something that I can really sustain (it's possible but not realistic with my busy lifestyle) without that essential protein source. So here I am-- trying SB for like the third time  |

I may have introduced myself before, but it was probably a while ago. I was diagnosed with PCOS back in 2005, but I think I've had it since the early 90s, and my own feelings is that I may even had the basic metabolic disturbance since I was born. Seriously, I cannot remember a time in my life when my weight wasn't an issue - even at kindergarten I was the fat kid.
Thankfully I have an understanding endocrinologist. Currently my meds are cyproterone acetate and metformin. Metformin is going up to 850mg twice a day and in six months time I can have Xenical too if I want it.
I've been on and off the SBD for a while, and I admit, the problem is for me when I come back to adding grains and starches back in. I go stupid with it. Every flipping time. The advantage is that I no longer like potatoes, but I do have a nasty habit of snacking on toast - even though I don't actually like bread that much. I guess my issue is getting the shopping organised PROPERLY so I have something better to snack on.
I think I'm going to find an SBD buddy this time round...

Hi all - so glad that I found some cysters on the beach!!
I am 45 and was diagnosed when I was 18 (thats way back in 1981!)
But the good news is that when I was in my 20s I tried clomid and got pregnant very quickly. My son is 17 now. Clomid did not work though after that so just the one son.
There were really no treatments back in the 1980s so it is only recently that I got referred to an edocrinologist and got put on Metformin.
Did I read that some here do not take Metformin while doing SB?
I have been on SB for 12 days - still in phase 1. Very little weight loss even though I started Metformin just before the diet. Disappointed by will stick with it. |

That's very true - metformin for PCOS is a relatively new therapy. Perhaps the insulin resistance part of it wasn't known. Even now, some medics will diagnose purely on the presence or not of cysts regardless of other symptoms - at least, in the UK IME.
I also had a GP for years during my childhood who was really fattist and if you were fat it was your fault, end of. A really helpful attitude...
In the past, if you had the cysts, surgery might be your option or if you had other hormonal issues - Dianette. BCPs are no longer an option for me. I tried Dianette and it triggered extreme PMT and some quite scary thought processes. I actually thought of handing myself over to a psychiatric unit I was so worried by the thought processes.
For me, I use SBD along with metformin and it works for me. I have to remember to eat within 3 hours of taking my metformin else I start getting symptoms of a hypo. That's usually an issue if I'm doing a 7am start and I don't eat until 10am. I also have watch myself between 2.30 - 4pm as I can start feeling really exhausted.

So, does being on Metformin help you lose weight. I have been on SB for a couple months now, and progress is going, but slow. I was diagnosed with PCOS several years back. I was but on metformin, but was talked into not taking it. Haven't been back to the doctor since. I am going back to an endo/gyno/obs next month, and have been thinking of asking for Metformin and possibly hormone replacement.
Has the Metformin or hormones helped anyone lose weight while on SB?
Thanks for your help. |

Hi, I'm so glad I found this thread! I'm 46 and, although I'm quite sure I've had PCOS since a teen, I was not diagnosed until summer 2003 - coincidentally I had been on SBD for about 2 weeks and already lost 11-12 pounds when I first saw endo...when she confirmed diagnosis, and started saying how it would really be "good" if I lost some weight (no duh - I was around 250# then), I told her I'd just started this diet called South Beach. Well, she'd heard of it and said "That's probably the best diet you could be on, with your insulin resistance."
I'm not on metformin now...most of my numbers stabilized after I'd lost about 80# or so. I never took more than 250-500 mg. a day - is there an "average" dose? It seems that many of you on this post take much higher doses than that.
It was really funny (NOT!) how, after losing so much weight on SB, even though it was very slow going, and keeping the bulk of it off for so long now, I wondered: WHY in the HECK didn't any other doctor EVER think of it before? I'd had hirsutism since early 20s; many times I'd go 3 months to a year without a period (when diagnosed it had been 2 years since last period)...I tend to think part of it is that so many doctors, when they see a fat woman, even if she tells them that she exercises a lot and is watching what she eats, they think: Yeah, right...she's not telling me the whole "truth"; she has no idea how much she's REALLY eating; she's exaggerating how much she exercises, blah blah blah.
So rather than consider: Hmmm, there might be a medical reason for her obesity...they think: She's lazy; she's lying...
Sorry, I'm kinda cynical when it comes to doctors.
I'm curious: Has anyone else had a nightmare experience like I did on Weight Watchers? (Gained 10# in 3 weeks...). That, more than anything, confirmed to me forever the impact of PCOS on my body and metabolism, etc. |
