I've had sleeping problems for years. Ambian quit working for me. My doctor told me to take 2 Benedryls at night. I sleep like a baby but am a little groggy in the morning.

Benadryl has the same ingredient in it as the PM medicines (Tylenol PM, Simply Sleep etc.) I have taken those for years...but be sure to watch your blood pressure, those allergy meds can cause high BP. I just made the correlation between my high BP and the meds, so I have stopped taking them every night. Three weeks ago I started taking flax meal (2 TBSP) in the mornings. My BP has gone down, I am not quite in the normal range yet. The next thing I am working on is to add more vigorous exercise to my daily routine.

One step at a time.

Valerian root will help you sleep. It stinks, but it works.

I had the same problem last night. I finally took some Valerian and slept quite well after about 1/2 hour.

HOWEVER, if you decide to take Valerian, make sure to read up on it. If you take too much for too long, one of it's side effects is depression. I'm not sure how much Valerian it takes to cause this, but I'm planning on checking into it since I think I will have trouble sleeping for a few days.

Finally came over to the health issues forum and lo and behold! I'm not the only one who cannot sleep.

I am getting plenty of exercise and the lack of sleep is really exhausting me. I thought I was so tired from the diet, but last night finally I slept for 6 or 6.5 hours (the most in a week) and today I feel much better.

So I think I'll take something. Melatonin has worked for me on long-haul flights, so I'll try that. You need to take melatonin (a homeopathic sleep aid) 30 minutes before you want to fall asleep and then actually be in bed, lights out, quiet.

I didn't like taking Valerian (pill form), but I really like SleepyTime tea w/ Valerian. I think it might be by Celestial Seasonings but am not sure. The regular Sleepytime (without Valerian) works for me too, but I find that the one w/ Valerian relaxes me and kind of lulls me into a nice sleep within about 1/2 hour or less. I am also NOT groggy in the morning, which is not the case if I take any of the "PM" type medicines like Tylenol.
