Sure no problem.
I have been eating the quick quiche cups 3 days a week and steel cut oats for the other 2 working days for breakfast. On the weekends i normally treat myself to 2 eggs and some canadian bacon. I eat breakfast during the week between 7:30 and 8am and on the weekends more like 10am.
About 2 hours after breakfast, during the work week (between 9:30 and 10:30) i eat a package of string cheese if i am hungry. I would say definatly i eat the cheese when my breakfast is the oats, but when i eat the quiche cups i would only about 1/3 of the time do i have the cheese.
I often do not have a snack on the weekend between breakfast and lunch because of my late eating time for breakfast on the weekends.
During the work week I eat lunch around 12:30 (most times i take my 30 min walk before lunch then to cool down i drink a big glass of water then have lunch.
Lunch is normally soup, either my veggie minestrone or the wonderful tomato bisque in the orange book along with a bread stick or WW bread i bake myself. I also include a piece of fruit or 2 if the fruit is small (like italian prunes or small plums). I eat the breadstick with my soup and the fruit after my meal. If i still need more food then i have one of the SB yummy peanut butter cookies or the custard in the orange book. I try to eat my entire lunch within 45 minutes of starting to eat.
On the weekends lunch if eaten at all is normally tuna salad with fresh veggies on the side and a slice of bread
Both during the week and on the weekends around 3ish i normally have some nuts...it depends on what i have around my office.
Dinner is between 6:30 and 7pm. It really depends on what mood i am in as to what we eat. During the week i try to plan 2 fish dinners, 1 red meat dinner, 1 pork dinner, and the rest chicken or veggie dinner. I mostly use recipies out of the orange book. With dinner i either have salad with dressing (blue cheese with no carbs) or green beans or fresh tomatoes or many other veggies. It depends on what looks good at the veggie market.
For the past week i have not had anything dessert like after dinner. I rarely have carbs with dinner.
I go to bed around 9:30 to 10pm.
I test my BG first thing in the morning before i do anything (which is about 5:30am). I have not tested it at any other time since my doc has not told me to.
When i was eating dessert right after dinner and i started testing myself the next morning my BG was in the 180's. I started to exercise and it dropped into the 170's. Then i stopped eating any carbs past 3 or 4 pm and it dropped into the 160's. Today it was 154 which is the lowest its been since i started testing.
I guess mostly i am wondering how regimented i am going to have to be? I can do this but it would be nice to have an option as to when i get to eat my carbs. And i dont want to feel guilty if i eat an extra piece of fruit when i am not eating a meal.
I hope this makes sense, and thanks for wanting to help I really appreciate it. |

HI Dariad
What kind of bread stick do you eat? You seem to be doing ok. But i would try to eat dinner a little earlier.
The other thing is i would test your blood first thing in the morning and before lunch and at night before snacks.
When i get up i take blood sugar, eat usually either uncle Sam Cereal or eggs or ww pancakes 9:00-10:00 Test my sugar at about 1:00 and then i usually eat tuna and a fruit and veg. Then i eat dinner about 5-6 and at about 8:30pm i have a snack that would be cheese fruit or both . Like me i am on meds (pill) and even being on them my sugar in the morning are up and low during the day then up in the morning. Besides during the morning stick i would test another time either before lunch or dinner and night snack.
The more you test the better you will have in controling it.
Hopes this helps check out your bread stick and what kind of vegs are you eating |

I dont. Water is the only thing i drink. I have never liked soda and once in a great while i will drink some iced tea unsweet.
Its a vegan recipie i have. Its all veggie (for SB i leave out the potaoe) You saute the onions, garlic in some olive oil add carrot, cabbage, squash, herbs, a few green peas, green beans tomatoes and some cranberry beans cook it in a big pot with water. Doesnt sound like much but its really yummy.
the breadsticks are WW flour and seeds.
I would love to do dinner earlier but by the time i get home from work and do even fast cooking its 6:30 if not 7 |

you are welcome. you need to adjust to your own schedule. But i wanted to give you an ideas. If you use can vegs us salt free or reduced.
breadsticks do you make them or are they store bought. if it is store bought make sure it actually is whole wheat. Drink plenty of water you can try some crystal light. That is very good.
You are doing good with eating maybe change around your times for the finger sticks and maybe it will even it self out in the long run. It takes time to get the blood sugar done. |

Thanks for the ideas and suggestions. I really appreciate it.
I will try all the things you have suggested.
Have you ever found that exercising at a specific time in the day is better for your BG than another time? I am very curious about that as well.
Also my doc has given me 2 months to get my BG down below 120. I have until the end of Oct to do this. Since i have never delt with this before is there a good chance I can do this or only a slim (no pun intended) chance? I have no idea how quickly BG adjusts to diet and exercise.
thanks again |

Dariad- Yes it can be done! if you stick with the SB and follow it as closely as possible I walk either in the morning or at night before my night time snack. Let me tell you something. The doctor told me on July6 that i have to lose weight and on July 8 when the bloodwork came back my sugar was 133 which according to him it was good for a diabetic. Clostriol was 160 he put me on meds for that for a month. He said i have to do something. July 5th started SB P@ because i need the fruit. I went to the doctors on 8/7 for checkup and weigh in July i weigh 298 and Aug. 9th weigh in at 284 14 pounds lost. Blood work came back a few days later MY SUGAR WAS "96" clostriol was down to 130 he reduced the med to MWF for a month and if it goes down he will take me off of it. And when i loose all the weight i may be of the diabetic meds too.
Now i was a person who has tried everything to lose weigh. And i have given up trying until my girlfriend suggest i try this. Now you ask if you can get your sugar down to 120 by October YES YOU CAN
And i am here all the way for you to success or to push you to do it |

Hi Dariad,
I saw your post this afternoon but had to leave the house and am just now getting back on the computer at 9:20 PM. I have not read any of the posts since I got back, but I think I have some answers/advice for you, passed along by another diabetic.
Welcome to our Diabetics on the South Beach thread. We are glad that you found us and look forward to learning from each other as we go along.
I don't like needles, either, and have to do some self calming when they draw blood. And why exactly do they always take two test tubes of blood? Isn't there enough blood in one test tube? That's something I would really like to know because I don't like to part with my blood.
I hope that you will not have to take insulin. I hope that by following the SBD guidelines that you will only at most have to take medication for diabetes, as do most of us. I have been taking diabetes medication since I was diagnosed a year and a half ago ... and my blood glucose levels have never to my knowledge been as high as yours have been and still are (although they are improving for you).
I take Avandia, an expensive medication that my insurance company pays for (except for the $40 copay each month). At first my doctor prescribed Glucophage generic Metformin. It is very inexpensive. However, I tried to adapt to it twice, but it gave me the worst diarrhea that I have ever had. Stoppied taking Metformin and everything was immediately fine. Started again at a very low dosage and immediately the diarrhea appeared. So, that's why I am on Avandia. I take one little pill each day before breakfast. It's really not hard to remember to do that. I do it right after I measure my morning (fasting) blood glucose.
I did not measure my BG levels until Monday last. Denial and fear of pricking my finger, etc. kept me in the dark about the effect of diet and exercise on my BG levels. I am finally proud of myself for taking care of myself better. This is no "diet" ... this is a permanent change for us.
Dariad254 wrote: I have been trending my BG (blood glucose) every morning now for a week and a half. My first reading (1.5 weeks ago) was 187 today i was at 154. I am not sure what all to change so what i have done is i exercise for at least 30 minutes a day, i eat nothing that might spike my insulin level after 3 pm, and i am still slowly losing weight (14 pounds in 9 weeks).
Losing 14 pounds is a big success, Dariad. Congratulations! Keep on going ... you help motivate some of us newbies in particular. Did you do phase I? I have not ... am doing phase II and learning as I go along.
Exercising regularly like you are doing is an important part of our program . I admit that I haven't made exercise a regular part of my life yet. When I do I expect the pounds to start melting off my body.
187 and even 154 are high fasting BG levels. Since Monday mine have been: 117, 108, 117, 108, 109. Even those numbers are higher than non-diabetics. Sounds like you are doing well reducing your fasting BG levels. I hope your measurements continue to trend downward.
Dariad254 wrote: This is a multi-variation experiment so I am not so sure which if any are really having an effect. I mean i'm really happy that my BG is headed in the right direction but I am not sure if it would be heading that way just by sticking to the program. If i had a piece of SB cheesecake after dinner would that screw up my BG for the next day? How does the timing of exercise change your BG? I normally take a 30 min walk at lunchtime but would it be better to exercise after i eat dinner? or first thing in the am?
On another SBD forum diabetic thread that I participate in, I asked why my fasting BG level was so high, being that I had not eaten since dinner the night before. Here is what someone very knowledgeable said in response to my quesiton:
"Your fasting BG in the morning may be higher than you expect it to be due to one of two phenomena, the Dawn Phenomena and the Smogoyi Effect. I think more people have the dawn syndrome, which is the effect of hormones entering your blood stream in the hour before you wake up, sending glucose into your bloodstream. For non-diabetics, this is a good thing, because it provides fuel with which to start the day. In a diabetic, especially a type 2, it puts a burden on our system because we tend to be insulin resistant, especially in the morning. **Exercise after dinner helps with this.**
The Smogoyi effect is actually a re-bound from a low during the night. This can be addressed with a *protein and carbohydrate snack before bed*.
I tend to exercise, and have a snack... sort of a belt and suspenders kind of thing!"
I hope that this person sharing knowledge and personal experienc is what you are looking for. I am taking her advice.
Beginning tonight I went for a walk for 2 miles after dinner. Then, for the very first time, I used the lancet on the side of my finger instead of my arm. Whiie I did feel the lancet on my finger more than my arm, I had the lancet set to its highest level and the prick of the lancet did not hurt at all. That surprised me ... I had a fear of taking a sample from my finger. My BG level an hour and fifteen meals after the end of my dinner and after the two mile walk was 109 mg/dL ... not too bad at all.
Now I am going to start eating a snack before bed time ... it will contain both protein and carbohydrate. And I will see what effect it has on my fasting BG level in the morning.
Let me know if this advice seems to lower your fasting BG level the next morning.
Catch you later ... 8) |

Good morning, everyone,
I tried something different last night ... I walked for 2 miles after dinner and I ate a cup of very low fat very low sugar yogurt before going to bed.
The result was that my fasting BG level this morning was the lowest that I have seen yet ... it was 96 mg/dL.
The experiment was a success ... anybody else want to try this and see what happens? I am going to prove to myself that this really works by repeating it and doing the experiment without walking and the yogurt bedtime snack, etc.
Will keep you informed.
Hope you are having a very good weekend. [ :) :) |

Hi Pat
25 years ago I was getting sores on my legs that would open up right to the bone. Twice over the course of time I spent 6weeks in the hospital on IVS with heavy duty antibiotics, the pain was excruciating. I have also spent 5 & 7 months in a wheelchair. In 93 the opening got so bad I ended up with gangerene in my leg. Fortunately again with heavy duty drugs they were able to stop it and I still have my legs. Both legs have large scars on them & the skin is very fragile. They sent me to many different specialist & hospitals. Diagnosis was anywhere from my immune system was attacking my body to allergy to shell fish. I had been classified as borderline diabetic which supposedly didnt mean much. About 8 years ago they said there was no such tthing as borderline. So have been on medformin since & advandia for the past 3 years. I have a lot of pain in my feet as well as neuropathy.
Just to let folks know if they have anything wrong with there legs, mine started as a little red spot & progressed from there, dollars to donuts, even if sugars are almost normal you have diabeties.
Take care and keep on smiling :D

Hi All
Sorry, I havent posted or check my emails for updates. Been busy running around getting things for vacation. We leave Sunday and we will be back on August 20 Friday.
Cetagenda- I am doing a little better, The abscess is open and draining which is a good sign. My doctor gave me more antibotics to take with me. Its still hard, but getting smaller according to my daughter who is taking care of it. I cant see it. Thanks to all that sent their prayers. Also my sugars are done. So, the antibotics are working.
Camper- Thanks for sharing your story with me. I know that it must of been tough to deal with. Did you have support while you were going through it. It gives me hope at the end of the tunnel. I also believe that SB will help us all. 4 years ago my doctor said i was borderline and had to do diet. (overweight etc) tried it for a year couldnt do it. So i have been on Actos 30 mg a day for year but still (overweight). Sugars were crazy. last month i had dizziness thought i was dying. The doctor said it could be from sugar and i was at my highest weight (298). The doctor said i was going to die if i dont get the weight off. So I started SBD been on a month sugar was 133 now is 96 clostriol was 160 is now 130. And then i got bite by a bug.
Never get a break!!! But that the way it is with diabetes.
I ate pretty good today.
B- blueberry pancakes WW
2-cups of coffee
L- truscits with cheese ( on the run)
D- WW spagetti with Tomato Sause and paste
Turkey sausage
D- SF Tastiekake which is a nono
Everyone have a good night!!!!!!!!! |
