Welcome to the beach Erica! And good luck on the SBD. You have come to the right place for support, companionship, encouragement, and advice from more experienced people. You will soon know many others and will feel right at home.
Now to answer your question about beans and phase 1:
Beans in general are part of phase 1. I'm pretty new at this myself, but I don't know of any exceptions to that ... you might check with others about fava beans. I have never cooked fava beans, have you?
If you would like to have some delicious bean recipes, go to the South Beach Diet Recipe subforum and click on the following at the top of the page:
Sticky: You guys interested in bean recipes?
There are many recipes there. The author of the thread is Burdle. Her Greek / Pizza beans, made with limas and bruschetta topping, are amazingly good ... never thought I would say that about lima beans. Anyway, that thread has been very helpful to me and many others. It is a sticky to keep it in place at the top of the forum ... because it is so popular and an excellent resource.

| Burdle's bean thread is the way to go! Beans are fine but remember that a serving size is 1/2 cup. Beans are a great way to add fiber and beat the constipation blues too. |

| Fava beans are allowed, but don't bother. They take FOREVER to cook and leave a lot to be desired in the way of flavour. |
