Hi everyone on the beach!

I have diabetes type 2. I am posting this topic on all of the subforums to find out if there is enough interest in having a subforum for Diabetics on South Beach. Otherwise, we might ask our administrator for a subforum for health related problems/issues. What do you think? Feel free to respond to this post or send me a PM (private message ... button at the bottom of this post).

Thanks! :D

Thanks for responding, daisyjk. Hopefully enough people with diabetes or pre-diabetes will respond so that we can learn from each other about diabetes and the South Beach Diet.

I think it is a great idea. My husband is a type 1 diabetic and started SB on Monday. Dealing with blood sugar levels makes any diet more difficult.

I am a type 2 and would love to have our own place. I am doing the SBD mainly because of my deteriorating condition and would like to know from other diabetics if this lifestyle has improved their numbers. If it has, it would be a huge incentive for me. Also would like to discuss if any of the foods/recipes aren't really good for diabetes. This is a great idea.

It would really be great to have an are to ask diabetic questions and get diabetic advice as far as the SBD goes. Is anyone else type 1? and have you been having any problems?

Yes, in fact, some people with diabetes skip phase I because of problems with hypoglycemia. If your husband has problems with hypoglycemia, he will want to check with his doctor about this ... some people with diabetes need the extra good carbs that are provided by phase II to prevent their blood glucose levels from becoming dangerously low.

I have not done phase I ... seems too restrictive to me as a diabetic ... don't know that I will do phase I at all. I am doing the best that I can to follow the phase II guidelines. I will stay in phase II for a very long time, as I have 100 pounds to lose to be healthy.

Thank you for responding to the post, Julia. Here's hoping that you and your husband have much success with the SBD. Having good control of blood glucose levels will help us prevent the many complications of diabetes.

Diabetes type 2 does not happen overnight. For many years prior to this there are elevated levels of insulin, which contributes to obesity and silently does damage to the body. I wish that more people found out that they were pre-diabetic and what to do to help prevent them from becoming diabetic ... doctors have a lot to learn, don't they?

With diabetes type 2 the pancreas works overtime in response to detection of elevated levels of glucose in the blood due to insulin resistance. Finally the pancreas is exhausted and can no longer keep up with the blood glucose (blood glucose measurements are consistently higher than normal) and the person is diagnosed with diabetes.

Although I was diagnosed with diabetes type II over a year and a half ago, I have been measuring my blood glucose levels for the past couple of days only. My BG levels before breakfast have been 117, 108, and 117. Yesterday I took a BG measurement 2 hours after the start of lunch ... it was 123. I think that is pretty good control, as the target is for BG to be less than 180. What I had for lunch: 2 tsp Metamucil about 15 minutes before lunch. Half a grilled lean pork chop, quionoa (unrefined grain) and black bean stew (with carrots and zuchinni slices), 2 Tbs of Tzatziki (creamy cucumber garlic dip), and a fresh peach.

I take Avandia (very expensive, thank heavens for group health insurance) once a day. I think that I am at an early stage of diabetes because without diet change my A1c levels were 6.8% (target for diabetics is less than 7%). However, as my doctor said, there is room for improvement, as the range for nondiabetics is 4 - 6%.

I am very much interested in the results of my next A1c measurement since I have recently started the SBD. As the test measures the average percent of hemoglobin that has glucose attached to it for the past 3 to 4 months (which is the life of a blood cell), my next reading will probably not be much improved. However ... the measurement following that should be a lot better. I hope so, anyway.

Good luck to you and your husband. I hope that the South Beach Diet and that this forum helps you, too. :)

I am new to both blood glucose testing (just been doing it for a couple of days) and to the South Beach Diet. My file at the doctor's office does contain the results of some lab work, primarily testing for A1c. So, I hope that I can keep good control of my blood glucose levels, with the help of the SBD.

BTW: in another SBD forum a diabetic recently said the following:

My first A1c was 14.4, by being on the SBD within 2 months it was down to 9.7.

Now that's what I call a success! I hope that this and other successes that people share with us will give us all a big incentive to keep following the guidelines of the SBD.

Best of luck to you, louisefour. Let's do all we can to stop the damaging effects of diabetes, including following the SDB guidlines.

Here's a link to The World's Healthiest Foods. The recipe for carrots is one that I plan to try today.

Hey everyone,

I just found a website called Diabetes Care which has recipe makeovers by Suzanne Butler. It's a very good resource for diabetics and for everyone following the South Beach Diet as well.

Hey patcat,

Thanks for responding. If you read my previous posts on this thread, I am a newbie on the SBD. I am also looking forward to hearing from others with diabetes following the SBD guidelines.

Here's hoping that you have a very good day on the beach! 8)

daisyjk- I share these with you all to say that we can do this even if we have medical issues. My doctor was so amazed at the numbers to. He said keep up the good work..

That still doesnt mean that i want to give up. But this is for the long haul and as long as we have the boards and each other we can do this.

There has been times this past month that i wanted to give up. It was hard work and hubby wasnt really behind me. So I do have a lot of negative stuff on my end

Hello everyone,

Thanks for joining us here. We now have several diabetics on the SBD threads running in this new health and medical issues forum. That must be very confusing for everyone. Also, I think that it would be better for us to all get together in one thread.

So, I created a new thread called "Diabetics on the Beach" in the Health and Medical Issues subforum.

Won't you please join us there? Let's all move to the new thread. Again, it is called "Diabetics on the Beach".

Looking forward to getting to know you all and to learn from each of your experiences.

Thanks! :D
