Hi everyone,
I've been on P1 for a little over 2 weeks. My first week loss was 6.5 lbs of which I gained 2 back the second week. I know basically it was from cheating a couple of times with carbs. My question is that my period is literally 4 days early, something that hasn't happened to me in 20 years. I asked another friend about this and she told me that she had unusually heavy cycles. Has anyone else experienced these things? And if yes doesn' t that mean that this diet is affecting hormones in a bad way? Since we're trying to get pregnant I'm really worried about this. Any help would be appreciated (I do know about that report about hi-protein low fertility but that study was also done on mice who are herbivores so they are not sure if it is true for humans). TIA |

Hi Nico,
The first month I was on SB my period was 10 days late which is extremely unusual for me as I am like clockwork, the next two have been very heavy and crampy but only for about 4 days then it stops alltogether. I do not know why, I would think eating healthy would make it better, I have even given up most of my caffeine. I have read other posts where people have had trouble too. I don't have any advice for you but just wanted to let you know you're not alone.
Take care, Gem |

| Hi, I am on day 9 and mine came early too, even though I'm on the Pill.... and has also been heavier than usual as you mentioned. I've seen other stuff on this board too. |

Mine was almost a week early too and I'm on the pill. I tried to research this, and the only answer I found was that sudden weight loss can trigger irregular periods, and that ketosis (which shouldn't be occuring in SB) can cause it. I was afraid that could be it with me, b/c I was eating lots of meat, eggs, and cheese. I ate veggies, but usually just in a salad. So I really increased my veggies to get those good carbs to avoid ketosis. We'll see if this month is normal. It could've just been a p1 think as your body adjusts/detox.
Especially if you're trying to get pregnant, I'd check with your doc/gyno with any further ?'s. |

| Thanks for the info ladies. I too have tried to research this and have been coming up empty except for a rapid weight loss. The thing is I didn't think 6lbs - 2 that I gained back is considered rapid. The other thing which I don't think I mentioned was that since we are trying to get pregnant I did Ovulation predictor kits this month and I never showed that I ovulated which is another first. I think I'm going to give this a rest for a month (not go crazy with carbs but reintroduce them) and see if I have a difference. I'm going to ask my dr. too - thanks again. |

I was a bit curious about this. I am 56 and have not had a period in 12 years - well, yesterday I started spotting. Strange.
I have been on the SBD for 2 months and lost 22 pounds. Don't know if its connected, but I do know I don't periods of any sort again. |

The early-period phenomenon has been noted a number of times on this board since I've been on it. It seems to be most common in the first month, and after that most of the women affected seem to stabilize. There is no mention of it in the South Beach book, but since it's such a common occurrence and causes so much concern
:!: HINT :!: I hope that Dr. A. addresses it in the next revision :!: HINT :!: |

Hi there,
I have had 3 periods in one month since starting this diet!!
I heard that it takes your body time to adjust!
It is highly annoying b/c I am uncertain as to how much weight I actually lost b/c you always weigh more at that time of month!!! |

My first period on the beach was a whole week early. It was very light, just a little more than spotting. I got my second one, it came on time, but was still extremely light. Hey no complaints here lol:) Ive been on the pill for 4 years and have had my period since i was 11 (11 years ago!) I havent been irregular since i was about 14. I called my doctor, and she said its totally normal and not to worry. So enjoy the light flow!

| Soy can also have an effect on your cycle, so if you've increased your soy intake, that may play a role. (Usually will make it late.) You can do a google search for soy and menstrual cycle and read about it... |

| I'm on depo and I don't usually spot until a week before my next shot. I have 3 weeks to go and I've been spotting occasionally. It's not bad, but hopefully it will go away next time. You would think that eating healthier wouldn't have that affect. Oh well... |

I am 10 days early!
I'm so glad that I found this thread! I was due to start during my holiday, but I started this morning....I wondered why I was extra hungry yesterday and felt extra sexy last night (I always get that leading up to my period :D ).
I wasn't worried about it, I just wondered what the heck had happened?!
Now I know :D |

I've been on SB for a month and a few days now. I spotted a week early but it only lasted a day. I thought I was done but my period started a few days later. This was an unual period for me. It was very light and it lasted longer than usual. Hopefully TOM will get back to normal.

| Estrogen is stored in fat cells. When you lose weight you release it into your blood stream and it can mess up your other hormones. After a month or so your body adjusts to the extra hormones. |
