Hello to all, I don't know if this topic has been covered since I'm new here, but do any of you find that taking ad's has slowed your weight loss?
I currently take paxil and wellbutrin(wellbutrin is supposed to counteract the side effects from the paxil). It doesn't seem to hinder weight loss. Now when I was on just the paxil alone, I gained back the 18lbs I had lost when I first started going thru the depression and couldn't eat anything because I felt like I was choking on everything.
Just thought all of us who are on AD's could support each other, because along with the weight loss issue we are dealing with  wonderful depression.
Hope you all are having a great Tuesday :D |

Hi: I was on Paxil in October, 2001 - I gained approx. 15 or more lbs., within a couple of months. All i did was eat, sleep, feel groggie and ate and slept some more. I was changed to Effexor - which slowed the growing weight - however, it 'seems' to be more difficult to keep the weight off with this. Not sure though - I'm guessing this could be one of the culprits. I'll check w/my doc this Friday, when I see her.
Good Luck & CONTINUED SUCCESS TO YOU! |

| During Phases 1 and 2 of SBD I lost 20 pounds total (over 3 months). My goal was 30 so I was pretty close. I take WellbutrinXL (300 mg) for ADD, and have gained 5 pounds since I started. I previously took generic Bupropion and found I could do a VERY liberal Phase 2 of SBD (= can eat Haggen Das coffee ice cream every night) without putting any weight back on. I don't have as much energy on the Wellbutrin and I feel like I have to go back to Phase 1. |

| I used to take Zoloft, which I think is similar to Paxil. I don't think the Zoloft alone made me gain weight, but it made me less likely to say no to bad foods. I feel like I have much more willpower when I don't take it. For instance, I've had a few days since starting this diet where I've gotten frustrated with a stall or not knowing what to eat that sometimes I felt like saying "screw it", but I kept with it. I probably would be cheating a lot more if I were still on the Zo. |

| My doctor switched me from Lexapro to Paxil because I was having panic attack. The Paxil has been wonderful for the depression/anxiety, but I gained about 15-20 pounds the first 2 months I was on it! Finally the weight gain stopped but I just couldn't lose. Since starting SBD I have lost 12 pounds but I feel like I should have lost a lot more by now. So I have been wondering if the Paxil could be the problem. Oh, by the way, I tried Wellbutrin when Paxil caused the extreme weight gain, and it just didn't work for me--BAD panic attacks. But now I am trying to get off the ad's all together. Hopefully I won't freak out and start panicking again. I am taking it slow and my doctor has advised me on how to wean myself off them. Hopefully it will help with the weight loss efforts too. |

I've been on several antidepressants, too and all made me gain weight. One pill I stayed on for years that didn't affect my weight was amitryptyline (SP?), which is actually an anti-spasmodic (irritable bowel), but also has a anti-depressant effect, as well. You could ask your doctor about it, see if it would be suitable for you.
I suffered all the symptoms, including horrid anxiety attacks - still have 'em, but now I'm taking the "face your fears" approach, am down to only .5 zanax for extreme nerves, and am working on changing my attitude and my approach to life i.e., thinking positive, not beating myself up for being human and having flaws, etc. It's not easy, and it takes a lot of practice but I'm finding I have strength I never dreamt possible and I feel a whole lot better than I do when I'm stuck on drugs. Even my doctor finally said "no more of these antidepressants for you, I guess"! And I'm relieved!
Good luck everyone - and think positive! :) |

SR is sustained release, 2/day schedule, XL is extended release, 1/day
XL seems to have been linked to seizures in certain studies
There's also an immediate release pill (you let it dissolve in your mouth)
Wellbutrin can also be used for smoking cessation and adult ADHD, although in much smaller doses. There shouldn't be an effect between the varieties, although you might feel the effects of one faster than the other (i.e., you should feel the IR pill first, then the SR, then the XL, but you'd also metabolise in the same order, with IR losing it's effectiveness first, etc) |

wow,
thanks for that info. I never understood the difference before. I like the sr. I feel better and don't have as much anxiety and don't spase(sp?) out
over little things with it. But I do not feel drugged. :)
all the other meds made me feel like I was in a fog. Anyway, I'm glad to understand the difference now. and I wouldn't mind if it does aid in weight loss.
Have a blessed food day everyone! |

| I tried paxil and couldn't take it. It gave me anxiety. Now I am on Celexa and have had no ill side-effects, including weight gain. My weight gain was purley self induced. |

I have been on antidepressants for about 6 years and most cause weight gain. I have gained about 30 pounds on Paxil, which is not unusual. I now take Omega-3 and Vitaman E every day and they help counter the effects of the Paxil so that I can lose weight. Before the Omega-3 I was going to the gym 4 days a week for cardio and doing yoga two days a week and not losing any weight because of the Paxil. I acutally gained weight while working out! By adding the Omega-3 supplement I am able to lose weight, though still more slowly than I'd like. You can do a search online about Paxil and weight gain to see how frequent of a side effect it is. That should lead you to more information about how Omega-3s work. It's a difficult trade-off - weight loss or emotional well being.
Hope this helps! |

I take Celexa and I don't think it caused me to really gain that much... but I also wasn't really paying attention... all I know is that I needed it...
I lost 15 lbs in 4weeks AND I am hypothyroid... so it isn't stopping me from loosing... there is a generic brand now available - at least in Canada that is cheaper... |
