First week on SB - back pain question

Hi everyone! New here - and have a question or two. First of all, today is 7 days on SB, and at weigh-in this morning I am down 6 pounds. I'm really pleased with that! I'm convinced this is going to work for DH and me. I have about 60 to lose - hubby has about 150 to lose. Unfortunately, we can't weigh hubby because the scales don't go that high.

For me, it's a health issue. My cholesterol is high, and the ratio is way off. My doctor suggested SB last winter, and I've been studying the diet and getting pysched up to make this life style change. Hubby's bloodwork is excellent - cholesterol of 155! Can you believe that? Being 150 pounds overweight, and the bloodwork of a teenager! Our doctor told him it's not his cholesterol that will cause him problems - it's the excess weight that will finally just wear his heart out. His blood sugar runs a little high, and although there is no diabetes in his family, we are concerned he is pre-diabetic.

We have both been on Atkins, and did extremely well as far as weight loss was concerned. After awhile, it just became too restrictive and we fell off the wagon. Then we both gained more weight than before. But the South Beach diet just makes more sense, and I think we can live with this diet forever.

I'm having a problem, though. Last Wednesday (4th day on the diet) my back started hurting - in my spine. Didn't think a lot about it, and it went away. Next day, I woke up with severe pain in the small of my back on my right side. I couldn't bend, and the pain stayed constant all day. Finally, I came home from work and searched this board. I had some ketostix left over from Atkins, and took the test. Sure enough... in ketosis! I started drinking tons of water, even though I felt I had been drinking plenty since starting the diet because I am ALWAYS thirsty. Asked hubby to bring me some cranberry juice. Darn it... he picked up the sugar kind! At that point, I didn't really care and drank a glass of it. The pain went away during the night, but is now back.

I skipped my blood pressure pill yesterday, because it has a diuretic in it. I thought maybe I was dehydrated, and that was causing the kidney pain. But the pain is still there today (and maybe a little worse). I was very, very thirsty the day the pain started, and had NO appetite at all.

I got this pain the first time I went on Atkins, but it went away after a day or so. This time, it's not going away. I really, really want this diet to work. Any suggestions, or ideas why I'm having kidney pain? We expected tiredness - got it, and dealt with it. Has anyone else had this type of pain?

btw..I know I would have lost more weight this first week if it hadn't been for the cranberry juice. But at least it knocked me out of ketosis and slowed down the weight loss, which I think (for me, anyway) was a good thing.

This board is awesome - I've been lurking for several months now, and have learned so much. Thanks to all of you for sharing your stories and tips!

You're limiting your carbs too much-- add some beans and/or dairy to get that level up and keep you out of ketosis. I hope it goes away soon!

Hi Kimboroni :D

Last night we had crookneck squash, and beans. Tonight I am fixing a delightful bean salad recipe I found on here. Also, this morning I had a glass of tomato juice. I'm taking your advice and upping the veggies - including beans. In fact - right now I'm gonna go drink a glass of 1% milk. Yummm... that sounds good right now!

I think what might have caused my problem is this: A friend gave us lots of beef from their farm raised cow. This meat is so lean (even the ground beef) that it sticks in the pan. I fixed the Mixed Up Casserole, and we ate on that for several days. Although we had salad and vegetables, I think I had too much protein. At least, I know this started after eating casserole for a couple of days. I'm having salmon tonight (canned) so we will see if cutting out the red meat helps.

Thanks so much for responding. Oh.. and WOW!!!! 10" off your waist? You are my HERO! I sure hope I can do that.

If the pain persists, make an appt. with your doctor. It may have nothing to do with the diet.

:!: I agree that you should see a doctor. You could have kidney stones.
