Type I or Type II?
i'm type II and this way of eating is fantastic for me - blood sugars have really stabilized (still high, but going down) - i understand there are very different issues for type I and i'm afraid i can't advise you on that although i know there are type I diabetics on this site because i have seen some of their postings - wish i could remember their names
try a search on "diabetes" and you should be able to find their postings
good luck |

Dan -- sorry, Type II.
How has it gone for you? What prompted you to start SB? How long did it take for blood sugars to go down? What meds were you on? How long have you been on the diet?
Gee, sounds like the 3rd degree, doesn't it? I don't mean to pry or get personal -- and, in truth, I'm not entirely sure what sort of info I'm looking for, I guess just others' experiences.
So, anything you want to tell me about your experience will be terrific, and appreciated.
I'm going to have him read the book (really, there's only 107 pages or so of "the book" and the rest is food stuff and recipes, so it shouldn't take him all that long or much effort). I want to encourage hm without nudging. I think he's afraid, but I'm not sure what of -- giving up stuff, I suppose, feeling deprived. That's probably it or close to it. When he gets home I'll see if I can probe the issue (without getting pushy, that would be a death knell for him and the diet).
If I've guessed right on what his issues are, I can certainly identify. After what I have put MY body through over the years, there was just no way in heck I could do ANY diet where there was any sense of deprivation, any feelings of hunger, etc. Just no way. That plus the lure of the health benefits was why I started on the Beach. Before that I really wanted to lose weight and get heatlhy but just had no way to get started. I think Phase 1 is brilliant -- and a godsend (to get rid of the cravings, not to mention the little jumpstart on the weight loss).
Sorry, I asked for YOUR story, didn't I? Just thinking out loud a bit. |

| I am a type II diabetic. I have only been on this new way of life for one week. My blood sugars dropped 50 pts in the morning and I haven't been over 100 as of yet :!: I am looking forward to doing away with as much medications that I can..My first week has also shown a great weight loss, but I have more to loose than most people. |

The Beach has gone great for me !!! I got onto it because of a visit to my doctor where we were talking about my blood sugars and my weight and the "latest" dietary recommendations and i told him that i was just sick and tired of the "scientific community" not being able to decide what we should be eating. I said that i had always thought the food pyramid was built on a thick base of carbs but that carbs turned into sugar faster than anything else. his response was "not all carbs" - and that got us onto a discussion of south beach.
anyway - i have been a diagnosed type II diabetic for over 10 years. i am now taking ALL the oral meds available - micronase, glucophage, actos, amaryl, and seven more for blood pressure, and cholesterol - and taking some of those at maximum dosages.
by blood readings had been all over the place - as high as the mid 200s and as low as the mid 70s (not on the same day, of course) - but after one week on south beach they had stabilized - mine have always been higher in the morning than at night - and i am now getting readings of 115-140 in the mornings and 95-120 before dinner (which has always been my low point during the day)
the first thing i did after reading the book was to clean out my kitchen - i put all the "bad" carbs into a box (two boxes, actually) pastas, crackers, cereals, cake mixes, rice, etc, etc, etc, - and gave it all to my neice whose thin, healthy family could eat it. that REALLY helped because when i got carb cravings during the first week i had nothing on hand to do any damage
the first few days are the worst - within 24 hours i was having "cracker cravings" - anything crispy and salty - i settled on rounds of cucumbers(crispy) with hummus spread (creamy and salty). on day 3-4 i had a nasty headache which many many people on this board have had as well. it went away after 24-36 hours and has never come back. after one week the "cravings" were prettty much gone.
my blood sugar readings just continue to get lower and - what impresses me most - more stable
if you have any specific questions, let me know - i'll do my best to answer them - good luck both to your husband and to you |

| I am not diabetic, but my father-in-law is. Sorry, I don't know much about the disease, so I don't know what type. What I do know is that he and my mother-in-law started the SBD a month ago, and he has dropped from 72 units of insulin a day to 34 and feeling great! |

Yes, I am diabetic and have been on the diet for about 7 weeks now. I am type II diabetic, and my only advice would be to make sure that your husband check his blood sugars every morning as he may not need as much medication with this diet. I am only taking about 1/4 of the medication that I usually take with this diet. It has lowered my blood sugars that much. |

Hello everyone,
Thanks for joining us here. We now have several diabetics on the SBD threads running in this new health and medical issues forum. That must be very confusing for everyone. Also, I think that it would be better for us to all get together in one thread.
So, I created a new thread called "Diabetics on the Beach" in the Health and Medical Issues subforum.
Won't you please join us there? Let's all move to the new thread. Again, it is called "Diabetics on the Beach".
Looking forward to getting to know you all and to learn from each of your experiences.
Thanks! :D |
