I completely agree with you. Whatever works. Anyone who has read Dr. Atkin's book understands that it is healthy if you follow the program. WHATEVER IT TAKES TO GET THE WEIGHT OFF. The Lifetime Maintenance PHASE of Atkins is almost identical to SB.

A lot of people fix high cholesterol by doing Atkins, but we also hear about a lot of people who get really high bad cholesterol numbers from doing Atkins. I don't know if it's user error or different body compositions or what.

If the Lifetime Maintenance Phase of Atkins is the same (lots of fruits and vegetables)----how could it be contributing to high cholesterol?

I just don't understand it all.

It isn't the maintenance part that gives high cholesterol, it's the weightloss portions. I tend to think that it's usually from people doing it wrong, by doing induction-level carbs the whole time and eating all the bacon they want, which isn't what Dr Atkins intended. I've never done Atkins, and I'm not a big fan, but I think the true Atkins is a better plan than the way it usually ends up getting done.

As the saying goes, "The Devil is in the details!" I too tend to view Atkins more benignly than most, probably because of what Kimboroni has posted about it in the past, as I haven't done much research of it on my own. I do think a lot of its negative perception has to do more with how people actually implement it as well as the marketing juggernaut known as Atkins Nutritionals Inc. (ANI). Also from a purely SB perspective, whenever I look at a menu item at a restaurant like Subway or wherever that has been Atkins approved, it does tend to look very heavy on saturated fats and their focus on net carbs, doesn't necessarily translate to good carbs in most instances. Now again this is more of an implementation issue rather than a program design issue, but when you look at enough foods that have been approved, and/or sold, by ANI that in our program we reject based on our general guiding principles as being unhealthy for us, then I think it is easy to reach the conclusion that they are different and as a personal preference I tend to agree with the SB approach more than the Atkins approach, particularly on the saturated fats area. I mean if they "almost identical" then why can't I usually eat any of their approved foods in a restaurant and I can usually order off the regular menu and by making informed substitutions come up with a reasonably close SB meal on my own?

I'm not gonna bash it, because it does seem to work for some people and it has been around a fairly long time. If it works for someone on a long term basis, and can provide a healthy variety of foods, good blood chemistry and long term weight control and maintenance, then I wouldn't tell them their "way" sucks! It would be interesting to see a non-partisan study that compared those factors for both SB and Atkins. There are obviously a lot of people out there that have trouble sticking with SB, or any other healthy WOE for that matter, as well. I don't think the success ratio of those who start SB is really all that much better than for most other "diets", including Atkins. That to me is the perplexing and critical issue that no one really has a good answer to. It seems like we have both a nation filled with overweight to obese people and a nation of serial dieters! We are obsessed with weight control, yet so very unsuccessful as a society to do anything about it. We, by and large, know what is good for us, yet ignore it on a daily basis. Fascinating....

CONVENIENCE is the KEY! I think most people eat the way they do because it is SO MUCH MORE convenient! It almost makes me mad that everytime you turn around---there are unhealthy alternatives looking at you in your face.....very seldom do you hear someone say we're giving away a healthy meal for anyone who wants it!

Atkins or SB----lack of convenience eventually takes over.

I have been on the Atkins diet for a week and have lost 10 lbs. I lost about 30lbs about a year ago but ended up having surgery and one of the meds was a steroid that made you gain wait  . I ended up gaining the weight back quickly.

Anyways, so I am on Atkins again. A friend's husband is doing the South Beach Diet and has lost 14lbs in 2 wks. I bought the SB book because my friend said that SB was much easier than Atkins... I have to disagree.

I will agree that SB has got to be much more healthy with the absence of so many of the fats... however, that is what makes Atkins easy for me. I dont have high cravings for breads & sugars. I crave juicy steaks, burgers (w/out the bun, of course), eggs (fried in butter, not spray), BRISKET cooked on the grill... fatty stuff! And Ketosis just makes it so much better!

I am, however, switching to SB for the health benefits. Not immediatly because my class reunion is coming up soon (20 years, yay!) and I want to lose about 30lbs in the next 3 months. From what I have read on SB and what I know about Atkins, both will allow quick weight loss... but without Ketosis I dont know how far I would make it w/ SB.

I am healthy, realitively young and only have 30 lbs to lose... I am hoping that I can lose the weight on Atkins then make the switch to SB for the long term... anybody see an unworkable problem with that?? :?:

If Atkins is so healthy, then why did the creator, Mr. Atkins himself, die from heart disease?

He didn't. Atkins died as a result of head injuries sustained from a fall. He was about 195 lbs going into the hospital (where he was in a coma) and balooned up to nearly 260 while he was there.

Atkins is NOT healthy!

Stay away from that cardiac arrest diet!
Its focuses on eating large quanities of saturated fats, and shuns fruits and vegetables. Additionally, the complete lack of carbs means anytime someone on Atkins DOES eat carbs they will gain weight quickly, as opposed to having a good dose of healthy carbs in your diet.

For your own health, stay away from Atkins.

Atkins is extremely healthy even long term as long as you take his basic advice to heart. People are scare of the enormous amount of bacon that their friends eat while on Atkins etc. However, Atkins explains that eating a pound of bacon in not the point and that making right choices for your lifetime is the way to look at his diet. Also Once you get to Phase 3 of both programs they are almost the same. I have a relative on phase 3 of Atkins and Phase 3 of SB and their lifestyles are the same. Also, I have been on SB for 2 days and I am arleady in Ketosis and that is eating all the veggies I want.
