Muscle Spasm in Calves

I am wondering if anyone else is experiencing these symptoms? Both my partner and I are waking up in the morning and having very painful muscle cramps in our calves (charlie horse type cramps). We have been on south beach for several months and still are on a modified Phase 1. We do not eat any baked good - bread, etc. and we are not eating any sugars. We eat a little fruit but not much. Someone told us it may be from being dehydrated - which I suppose is possible. We probably do not drink as much water as we should. Is anyone else experiencing this?
Any info would be interesting. Thanks. RS

I use to have them and would wake up in the middle of the night with them so bad. I actually have not had them in a long time, but at the time, I was told it was from lack of some sort of vitamin or mineral.

It's a lack of potassium. My mom's doc(she has diabetes) recommends eating half of a banana(now OK on SB) a day.

I used to get that when I was on a low-cal diet and was exercising alot. Someone told me to eat a banana everyday because I was not getting enough potassium.....its worth a shot.

I know about a week or two ago, I was having the same problems, but only one leg. Go figure!! I could not claim it to be dehydration because I drink like a fish and I only drink water. Luckily, I knew that a banana would cure me. There are times at night that I wake up with a charlie horse, I make my way into the kitchen, lord knows I don't know how....eat a banana and it is instantly gone. Also, make sure that you are stretching your legs enough. This is also a must.

Hope this helps.

That's really funny you mentioned this. I am on day 4 of P1 and I woke up yesterday morning with a charlie horse in my calve. So this does mean I need more potassium? don't get it...

Try eating a tums..

I know that sounds strange, but it works EVERY time for me, Fairly fast. I used to get cramps that when I was walking long distances with very competitive group of women. My muscles would just HURT. I'd pop one and it'd give me quick relief.

So maybe Calcium? Or Maybe Tums has potassium too.

I had a horrible time with leg cramps while pregnant - my Dr. said I needed more calcium (which is why the TUMS probably helps).

This is my first day on the diet (hubby is following too), and my first post. Love this site!!!!

It could be lack of potassium, calcium or dehydration. I have heard of all of them as being culprits of leg cramps.

oh goodness ... i am having reeeally bad charlie horses. at first they were just occuring during the nite - but yesterday i got one at the gym ... and almost died! they hurt so badly!

i run 5-6 miles a day and also bike for about 20-30 mins. i lift a different muscle group each day. i *usually* get my required water in every single day. i also get enough calcium each day (skim milk and yogurt).

so is it a lack of potassium?? i am supposed to watch my potassium intake b/c my birth control pill apparently has high levels of potassium. the doc told me to curb my intake.

so what gives??
my right calf is actually still sore from the charlie horse i got early this morning (when i was still sleeping).
any advicei is appreciated, thanks!

You can add bananas and/or go to the vitamin store and buy potassium pills. I've had calf pain for a couple years now and it's not fun - my is partly overwork (from exercise) and potassium.

CheriM's right, there are MANY different reasons for leg cramps. Both my hubby and I got them a couple different times in P1, probably from dehydration. From the time I was 7 until 17 I got them because I took dance lessons and practiced 5 hours a day. In fact the ACTUAL cause of leg cramps aren't even known for certain but here are a few things ppl see as contributing factors:

Muscle fatigue
Heavy exercising
Dehydration
High weight (not necessarily obesity)
Electrolyte imbalances
Hormonal Therapy
Pregnancy
Rapid Bone Growth (growing pains)
Potassium Deficiency
Excessive Water Retention
Some Medications

I would look at any of these or other factors and see which is most likely. For he and I, I KNOW it was dehydration. For the first week of P1 my hubby called it "The Pee Diet."
