I recall reading somewhere that diet soda was not okay -- does anyone else remember reading this?
I thought it had to do with artificial sugar/sugar and the way your body works, etc. with the insulin levels responding to both artificial and real sugar in a similar way.
Thanks  |

| On page 56 of the book it says that "sodas are a major souce of sugar, so I won't belabor it. Sweetened iced teas aren't much better." And then it goes on to say "some diets steer people toward decaf for the simple reason that caffeine does stimulate the pancreas to produce insulin, which is the last thing an overweight person needs...if a cup or two of coffee a day makes you happy, I think you should feel free." So basically you can have soda or tea, but you do want to use artificial sweetner. Splenda is the best sweetner to use. I can tell you that the only way for me to drink a diet soda is that it needs to be caffeine free--it just is a different taste. Diet Rite is the ONLY diet drink made with Splenda, and it's caffeine and sodium free. You just need to make sure that it is very cold or has ice. I think it's a great diet drink and doesn't have that after taste. Diet Rite also comes in different flavors like orange, lime, etc., in addition to the basic cola taste. Hope that helps! |

Many of the diet sodas are high in sugar (i believe diet sprint would be included in that). However, I've found several sodas that are 0 cal, 0 sugar (at least none are listed), 0 caffiene, 0 fat and <1 carb.
Two that I found were Diet Siera Mist and Diet A&W RootBeer.
Beware - many of the diet sodas are high in sugar. |

| The other issue with many of the diet sodas is the aspartame. Very bad for you! That's why the Splenda diet sodas are so much better. I've found a Kiwi Strawberry Diet Rite that's great! |

| I am so confused with the pop thing. Book said Sugar Free, Caffeine Free, Diet was ok. Pepsi and coke have both of these products. Or is it no sugar substitutes at all. |

Try Diet Hansens!, It's Really good and made with splenda. I recommend the ginger ale, and kiwi and strawberry.
Sincerely,

FYI: Diet Sprite, though made with aspartame, does NOT contain sugar. Granted, Splenda is a much better substitute, but diet Sprite tastes good, it's caffiene-free and just like anything, in moderation, it's a fine alternative to drinking water all the time.
I DO want to try that Diet Rite now!!

No, that's completely false. Diet sodas have either negligible amounts of sugar or no sugar at all. They use artifical sweetener. That is why they have zero or very few calories. If they had sugar, they would have lots of calories.
I don't know what "Diet Sprint" is but Diet Sprite has 0 g of sugar, 0 g of carbs and about 6 calories per 8 oz serving. Also, Coca-Cola, which makes Diet Sprite, is in the process of reformulating it with a different kind of artificial sweetener to bring the calories down to 0, and they are renaming it "Sprite Zero."
An 8 oz. serving of Diet Sierra Mist has 1 g of sugar, less than 1 g of carbs and 0 calories. Regular Sierra Mist has 26 g of sugar.
A "large" serving of Diet A&W has 0 g of sugar and 0 carbs and 0 calories
And to clarify other issues, some, but not all diet sodas have caffeine. Diet Coke and Diet Pepsi have caffeine, but they also make caffeine-free Diet Colas (Diet Pepsi Free, for example) and things like Diet Sprite, as mentioned above, have neither sugar nor caffeine. Check the labels for sugar and caffeine content.
It is a myth that caffeine is prohibited on SBD. It is allowed in moderation. This includes diet colas, coffee, brewed tea and iced tea.
It is a myth that diet soda is prohibited on SBD. It is allowed, though should probably not be used as your sole source of hydration. Even then, it's better than nothing. |
