I've had IBS, am lactose intolerant, and have had acne for years. Since I've been on this diet, I've noticed my skin is clearer and my digestion is tons better! Anyone else had similar experiences??? I'm amazed. I wonder what exactly was causing my acne....the oil production...maybe the bad carbs...the processed foods...the hydrogenated oils....all the sugar?? I wonder....
I always knew that there have been tons of studies correlating your skin and intestinal track...but, wow...it's true!
Let me know if any of you have noticed the same thing happening!

I am with you on the IBS thing. Since I started this way of eating, I am not having near the problems that I was having. Although I am still on my meds. I am beginning to think that before long I will be able to reduce them. Even though I have never really had an acne problem perse, usually I would get it pretty bad during that TOM. Now, I don't have many breakouts and with all the water that I am drinking a have a healthy glow.
I have read some articles on the effects that your diet has on your acne problems. Whether they are true or not, I couldn't say, but if you notice a difference then good for you. My girlfriend suffers from cystic acne and I know how hard it can be on a day to day basis. Her dermotologist cannot seem to find what is causing it. I've given her all of the info that I read about, she takes it to him and he says .....that can't be it. Well, what do I know???
Anyway, I'm very happy for you that you have noticed a difference in both your IBS and acne. This WOE is definitely overall a truly healthy way to live.
Good luck on your journey!! |

I never took meds for my IBS, although I probably should have at times....I just tried having some herbal supplements that helped some....(Acidophilus and Colostrum)
anyway, I know your friend's struggle..tell her to get pregnant! haha I have found that from my 5th month of pregnancy on... (now my son is 4.5 months) that my acne gradually got tons better! And now that I have been on the diet...it's even better! I have slight breakouts now...and no cystic ones! (sorry to be so blunt people, I'm sure no one wants to hear about my acne..haha)
but, I'm just so amazed....this has been a major struggle...I've tried everything...Pro-active...birth control....antibiotics....etc. Only thing I didn't try yet is Acutane. ugh. So far so good, though. Looks like I might not need it! |

| i noticed my skin feeling softer. i think it is because of the massive amts of water that i am drinking. i say softer because i typically have clear skin, but it still felt sort of dry/rough if i were to rub my face...but now it's super soft/clear! yay for healthy eating. |

HA HA!!! She is pregnant, but only a few weeks. The birth control that she was taking helped a little, but you could tell as soon as she stopped taking it. Now, it is really bad and I feel for her because she says that it hurts. I can imagine that it does. I also told her that her pregnancy could in fact help it, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed.
Because my IBS had gotten so bad and with my job, I really needed something to control it. My doc actually put me on a med for cholesterol and it has worked wonders. I do have to get regular testing to make sure that the good cholesterol isn't too low. Other than that, it's been great not having those problems. |

that's great, girls!
That's hilarious that your friend is indeed pregnant! The birth control did help a bit for me, too...but, still too much for me to be satisfied.
Tell her to eat healthy like the South Beach while pregnant and her skin may get better! (Also, tell her that while her hormones are adjusting in the first few months of pregnancy, her acne could be way worse...it was for me...)
BUT THEN at about 5 months..it totally improved!!!
Tell her congrats and good luck with the pregnancy....so glad mine is over!!! |

| During Phase 1, I did up my intake of Miralax(meds for IBS) but moved back down to regular dose in the second week. I actually ran out of my meds this week, and switched to Benefiber until Friday(can't afford the med until then-damn insurance for not covering it) and the Benefiber has worked just as well, that I am curious as to whether or not I need the Miralax. We shall see. |

I have suffered all my life from IBS (otherwise known as a nervous stomach!). Whenever I drop the massive amounts of sugar and especially the COMBINATION of sugar, flour and fat from my diet - all my digestive problems disappear. No cramps etc. Also, my reflux hernia (which causes bad heartburn) completely calms down and I barely need to take maybe one Tums every few days. When I eat the junky way I have to take medication daily for my heartburn (losec, for those who understand  ).
I think that products like cake, which have sugar, flour and fat are what absolutely KILL my stomach.
I am a new person since I started phase 1 a few weeks ago :D |

Benefiber is over the counter, with the Metamucil & Citrucels. It is similar to my Miralax, which disolves into whatever you mix it in, so no taste. Benefiber doesn't have the same ingredients, but it still disolves and works for me.
And previously I could drink a whole large bottle of Metamucil and have no effect on my regularity, other than more cramping. |

| I have been on SBD over a month now and I had not thought about it until I read all of your posts, but before SBD I was taking around 10-20 tums a day! I haven't needed one in a month and had not connected the two until I saw your conversations. I have been eating tons of spicy foods and salsa to liven up my menus also!!! Guess healthy eating has changed more than just my weight! Thanks for making me notice! :) |

me too
I had IBS also. I stopped eating salads because it went right thru me.
Now I can eat whatever I want and not have the bathroom problem.
My skin is softer also. Why is that???? |

Ok, SBD has done nothing for my skin or my ibs. I am also lactose intolerant. I haven't noticed much of a change. But hey, I'm glad its working for others!

Even my 10-year-old daughter said, "Mommy, your skin looks great!"
No IBS here, but I don't have to take anything for my acid reflux as long as I stick to SB foods. It's wonderful! |

I'm so glad that I brought this up!!! It's great to hear that it's a common thing for others eating South Beach. It totally makes sense that our body functions better when eating the healthiest, most natural foods from the earth! Just the way God intended it.
YAY! |
