Greetings all...
I have been lurking around the boards for the last few weeks and started P1 this morning. Drinking water like a mad man, in fact I am wondering if they are going to have me starting the Belmont Stakes soon. :D
Okay so a little about myself. I am 34 and 6'6 236 lbs. I am looking to drop back into the 205-210 range. Get rid of this gut of mine. I look foward to sharing my experiences and getting encouragement from the rest of you. My wife is also going to take on parts of the diet, but being she's 6 and 1/2 months pregnant, I'm not sure she could or should go full into the thing.
Today has been a bit rough, started out an hour late on about everything so I couldn't have breakfast. Lunch was salad with a few slices of ham, a hard boiled egg, and a bit of cheese. Looking forward to the celery and Laughing Cow cheese later in the day. I miss the crunch of crackers but I think the meat/cheese rollups are going to have to replace that habit.
Have no idea what the wife's planning for dinner, but I think I need to fire up the charcoal grill and get some chicken cooked up for salads this week.
Well enough for now...

Okay so I made a huge mistake yesterday. Skipped breakfast, and I didn't bring enough food for me to eat during the day so last night I felt like I was starving. I kept my resolve however and didn't give into the temptation for a six pack of Taco's and a few loafs of bread! Won't be making that mistake again.
The fudgecicle saved me last night. Today I brought plenty of celery, a wedge of Laughing Cow and of course my chicken salad with what seems like twenty gallons of water... :) The wife and I made some of the lettuce wraps last night as well. I want to treat myself so those bad boys are going to be my afternoon snack. It seems to go easier when you look forward to a treat. I don't feel anywhere near as hungry yesterday, but of course I crave everything I cannot have. But 36 hours in, we are doing well. Take it one day at a time. |

Hey Grant--
You gotta make sure you eat! :) I keep sunflower kernels in my car in case of an "emergency". The salty, nutty flavor keeps me going on just a small amount.
Do you like triscuits? On P2, you can have a few triscuits with the laughing cow cheese. Celery is a good substitute too. My boys wrestle and several wrestlers "cut" weight by eating celery and salsa. Takes more energy to chew it. :D
Congrats on your baby! I'm an OB nurse...kind of fond of babies.

Thanks for the post Anne, yeah I won't me making the mistake of not having enough food around again. Lesson learned. And I love triscuits. So that is going to be another one of those non-guilty pleasures. I am really learning how to moderate things and enjoy small pleasures. Is salsa something that can be had on Phase I?
Now on to the update. Yesterday was ROUGH... I was at a conference and all around me from 7 am until 5 pm were things I couldn't have. Danishes, juices, chips, cookies...WHOA NELLY! But I made it. I had two eggs and two slices of turkey bacon before I left (that helped battle the danishes) had half a cup of coffee there at the conference (told myself it's a splurge) and kept plenty of water around. I had my trusty celery sticks and laughing cow for my snack.
Lunchtime, the conference brought in wrap sandwidch type things so I peeled off the wrap and was plesently surprised to see nothing but lettuce, cheese, and turkey. Rolled the lettuce around it up and ate that. See I can do this even on the road...
Afternoon snack I busted out with the bag of 20 peanuts. Snaked on those with a couple bottles of water and amazing how you fill up on it. After the conference was over I was ready for dinner and boy those fast food joints are all over!!! You never really notice until you are looking for them (or in my case not looking or smelling for them) :D
I got home and had a grilled chicken breast with some greenbeans, a small salad (ate that first) and some zuchinni. Filled me up! First night that I actually felt beyond full... My wife asked if I wanted my fudgcicle and I had to turn it down. No room!!!
Today, day #4 and I feel great. Starting to pick up the energy and my 2 egg, mushrooom and cheese omelet (more like scrambled eggs because I have never been good at omlets) really hit the spot! Before the diet I never ate breakfast, now I really look forward to it. An extra 15 minutes makes a ton of difference. My cravings today have not been really anything other than fruit. It's summer now and all that watermelon and the fresh pineapple and strawberries is such a temptation. But it will be there in 10 more days and then MODERATION! |

| Your attitude is fantastic. I have a totally different view on food since starting the SBD. I still do love good food-going out to dinner, etc-but I was always hungry before SBD so my choices were out of desperation rather than just sustenance. As long as you plan ahead and have things on hand you and your wife will be fine. You may think bad food at first, but when you have good food instead you mindset changes and all is OK. |

Follup on day 4 before I move to today. Last evening was brutal. I couldn't believe how hungry I was. Now I know that some of it had to be the fact that I was in the grocery store shopping, but man that was tough. Lucky for me the store sells the cheese sticks individually so that and a bottle of water got me home. Dinner I did flank steak with squash and some green beans. Ahhhh how I love steak! Skipped the fudgecicle for the second night because I was satisfied and didn't need that treat.
Day 5. Just Monday I was wondering how people got to day 5 without going insane now I see it's not that bad. Things are becoming a habbit. I was running behind normal schedule today and noticed how thirsty I was. Amazing how 4 days of drinking a ton of water will change things. Breakfast today was plain ol scrambeled eggs and two pieces of turkey bacon.
Lunch the tuna salad from the book. Ohhh boy that really did the trick for me. All of the veggies and that dressing with the lime and EVOO YUM! I could cut the garlic back for my taste but otherwise it was great! Snacks today were the celery and laughing cow and some Sugar Free Jello.
I am going to fireup the charcoal grill tonight and cook not only dinner, but throw a couple of extra chicken breasts and a steak or two on for next weeks lunch. I enjoy salads, but it's nice to have a change. I keep finding new recipies on the various sites and here on this board and am going to experiment with those this weekend. I am gearing up mentally for the weekend. I am thinking that not having the distraction of work is going to be a challenge, but we will keep on task. It's all I can do to keep off the scale! LOL. The pants are feeling loose again so I think we are making progress.
Well thats it for now. The rest of you have a great weekend and keep on keepin on. It's all worth it in the end. |

Thepug thanks for the hello and welcome.
Okay quick update on the weekend. Things went great. I was tempted ohh so many times, but stuck to it. Sunday, fired up the grill and knocked out some grilled chicken, vegies, and flank steak with plenty left to get through the rest of this week. I made the Chili that someone posted to the boards on Saturday. Man where has this stuff been all of my life. It really hit the spot. I got a NASTY leg cramp on Friday night. Missing the Potassium from my bannanas so hit the store for some Avacado and tomatos.
Note to self: Don't run past dounut shop early in the morning (mmmm donuts) I am glad I don't bring any money when I jog.
I keep getting cravings after 4pm. Maybe I have some mental reconditioning to keep those cravings away. Tried the roasted chickpeas yesterday. Pretty good, but I think I need to roast em a bit longer next time as some were a bit chewy.
So we are on day 8 today. Weigh in time... Started SB at 235 (had started eating healthier about a month before to drop 10 lbs even before discovering SB) today <DRUM ROLL> 228!!. I about fell off the scale. That was the motiviation I needed to get through the rest of the week. Menu for the day:
B: Omlet (how the hell can I get this thing turned without scrambling it?!)
S: Peanuts
L: Garden Salad with tomatos, avacado, mushrooms and onions. Using just a dash of itallian dressing for some flavor. Also having leftover chili.
S: Celerey and laughing cow
D: Not sure yet, but hoping for the vegi lasagna. I went on a mission this weekend to find NSA Spaghetti sauce.
Well that's it for now. Things are going relativly well. I still struggle with cravings and even got a bit down this weekend since I really wanted to eat what I couldn't eat, but made it through. I do need some advice though. I have to go to San Francisco on a business trip next week. I was thinking of jumping to Phase 2 after 13 days to allow for a bit of induction at home before I hit the road. Anyone skipped a day of Phase 1 like this? Is this a good idea?

Apparently, bananas are "allowed" now. They saved me this weekend. Had one with PB.

Grant,
Just reading your journal got me motivated all over again! You're doing so great!
2 things...where on earth did you find laughing cow cheese? every grocery store around here is sold out! I don't even know if I'll like it but I want to try it! ARGH!
Have you been jogging long? I've been trying to follow a walk then jog plan. Man, it's a killer. I just can't go for long periods of time without losing all my breath! Now my ankles are fighting me. They hurt if I take a day off. I really want to use jogging as a form of cardio but it's hard! |

Anne, I am still working phase one so bannanas are not yet on my menu, but will be soon. As far as the Chili recipe I used Caylynns posted here:
http://www.southbeach-diet-plan.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=3988&highlight=chili
I did use two different colors of kidney beans instead of the black beans, but that's just my taste. I also added more chili powder and a dash of tobasco to kick it up to meet my spicy taste buds head on.
Need control. I am glad that I have helped motivate someone. I really hit the dumpster last night. Frustrated and aching from cravings, I just about dropped it all for PF Changs but resisted and made some oven baked chicken and drank a ton of water to try and resist going out for bad yucky foods. As far as laughing cow is concerned they have it at my local Sams Club. I have also seen it at Walmart here. It's usually by the specialty cheeses not by the regular cheddar and the like. It's very good!
On the jogging front, I jog or bike when I can. Usually running two days a week and biking another two or three. I have only been running a few months, and deal with pain in my knees which is why I cannot do it as much as I would like to. I did a staged work up to be able to run constantly by walking for a few minutes, the running, then a bit of walking and running again. Adding more time to running and less to walking every stage. I can't find the article I followed, but here is something that is very close to what I did to start.

Updates on day 9 as we proceed. I hope to not see a repeat of yesterday, that was tough, I just keep telling myself how good those 8 lbs look and forget how good that food tatstes. :D |
