Today is the first day of my South Beach Diet. I got on the scale I just bought and was amazed that I weigh an all time personal high of 332 lbs. I have been diagnonsed with High Blood Pressure, High Cholesterol, and I am being tested tonite for sleep apnea. the doctors believe that all of my troubles are based off my weight gain in the past few years. I was comfortably plump at 265 just a few years ago, and I was in good shape at 240 lbs during my 20's. Now that I am almost 40, I will return to an attainable weight of 240lbs and feel in control of my life again.
So I have decided to lose the weight and today is the start of this journey.
My goals include losing 92lbs long term; 20 lbs this month and 10 lbs the following month, and 5 lbs in August. This will get me down to 290 lbs by Labor Day. By the end of the year, I would like to be down to 270lbs and working out at least 3 times a week without even thinking about it.
I also need to lower my blood pressure, and cholesterol levels.
These results can be attained, if I follow a strict diet and begin in ernest an exercise program that will include a minumum of a 1 mile walk per day and another 30 minutes of cardio on my crosstrainer 3 times a week.
Wish me luck !!!!

Good luck!
I started the SBD last Tuesday with a minimum goal of going from 265 to below 200, would like to go well past that. So far so good. It's been a nice lifestyle change for me since I've never really tried to lose any weight before. |

Hey, Tony!
I started this diet when I was put on high blood pressure meds in March. I go back in a week for a check up and am hoping I can get off of them. Istarted at 257 lbs. and am now at 214 lbs. I want to get to around 150, so I still have quite a ways to go, but I'm getting there. Your goals really sound good, and so does you're attitude and determination. I know you'll be able to do it! |

the first day was not that bad!!
I started off the day with 3 scrambled eggs
I had a pickle for a snack
for lunch I had a lettuce wrap turkey sandwich and a small green salad with tuna
for dinner I had a small steak and a small green salad with a low carb ranch dressing.
I snacked on some peanuts and pistacios in the evening.
I limited myself to one can of diet coke and drank 1.5 liters of water during the day.
This morning I had 4 scrambled eggs and two slices of canadian bacon. |

Today was was great!! I was scared of today because of others saying day 3 was very hard, but I was lucky.
We had salad, ground turkey patty with low fat cheese and some prawns for dinner last night and even though the patties didnt have mayo or anything else, they were fine. i had a sugar free popsicle last night with some nuts and life was good.
Today, i had a turkey patty for breakfast and lunch (good leftovers), and had some pickles and string cheese for snacks. tonite we had salad, steak and prawns, and will have leftovers for tommorows lunch and breakfast ( i love leftover steak)
I really appreciate everyones encouragement, it helps alot.
OOPS- I almost forgot. I walked 1.5 miles last night and 1.25 miles tonight, and it feels great. I just need to make this a habit, and all will be good.

Tony, sounds like you are doing wonderfully! So proud of your determination!!
I also started SB on 6-1-04, and I have a good bit of weight to lose, as well, although my primary goal is to get OFF medication for HBP. So, we are in this together for the duration. So far it is going well, which is a nice change from other diets I've tried in the past - because I'm not starving all the time, I guess from the protein and the lack of bad carbs -- also not shaky and ramped up from diet pills. I also have not really been craving things too badly. Definitely have more energy.
Stay strong!!! We can do this thing!!! |

Day 4 worked out fine. I did have the leftover steak for breakfast and lunch, with some string cheese for snacks and three pickles during lunch. I drank 2.5 liters of water but did have two 44oz diet pepsi's too (very normal for me) but they did not seem to start any cravings at all. For dinners we had a chicken breast salad with the lo carb ranch dressing and some prawns on the side. I walked 1.25 miles after dinner, and then had some pistacios for a snack later.
This diet seems to fit into alot of the foods i already enjoy, but without all of the starches, and the sweet sauces that i do like too. I am already planning for week 3, which is good because i do plan to continue this diet for a long time hopefuly with great results.
Thanks for everyones encouragement,
everyone else keep on going too!!!!
Taking it one day at a time,

Tony, it sounds like you are motivated and that is the key to success. Keep up the good (and hard) work!!
Posted in another thread about the way weight loss can affect your blood pressure and heart rate and fairly quickly too.
When I weighed over 200, my resting heart rate was at least 110 and my blood pressure was borderline high. I got very out of breath climbing stairs or walking any distance.
I'm down 37 lbs so far and there is already a positive effect on my BP and HR. Tonight my BP reading was 113/67 and HR was 78.
The only lifestyle change I have done is start the SBD so I give it total credit for the positive changes to my health.
Give it a little time and I'm sure you will see similar changes too, Tony! :D |
